It is bordered by [[Sierra]] to the south, [[Superior]] to the east, [[Canada]] to the north, and the {{W|Pacific Ocean}} to the west. The capital and largest city is Seattle, located in the province of Olympia.

Astoria was first inhabited by Native Americans up until European exploration which was first undertaken by the Spanish. In the early 1800's the {{W|Lewis and Clark Expedition}} sponsored by the {{W|United States}} was undertaken that mapped out much of Astoria alongside British explorer {{W|David Thompson (explorer)|David Thompson}}. After the [[Canadian War of Independence]] in which the nation of [[Canada]] secured its sovereignty from the British Empire, the Canadian government had invested interest in the region of Astoria, but soon found itself competing with the United States for control over the region leading to the 1846 [[Oregon Treaty]] between the two nations in which Astoria was jointly-administered by both nations, though the United States claimed it as the Oregon Territory.

During the years under American and Canadian administration, the territory was politically volatile and movements for self-determination and independence grew, especially during the 1864 conscription crisis when Astorian citizens rested attempts to be drafted to fight in the {{W|American Civil War}}. When the [[War of Contingency]] began in 1865, the region's forces were mobilized to protect Astoria only and in 1866, the country declared its independence and proclaimed the establishment of the [[Free State of Astoria]]. Both Canada and Sierra recognized it, but Canadian troops occupied the country in 1866 leading to the four month long [[Eugene War]] between Sierra and Canada ending in Sierran victory and Canadian and Sierran cooperation in securing Astoria's independence.

Astoria is a federal parliamentary presidential constitutional republic with a developed market economy, with major exports including timber, fishing, and agriculture, machinery, electronics manufacturing, silver mining, and tourism. Astoria is one of North America's largest lumber industries alongside Canada as well as being one of the largest exporters of potatoes.

Astoria has close relations with its closest neighbors Sierra, Superior, and Canada. Astoria is a federal parliamentary constitutional presidential republic. It has had a stable democratic system in place since its foundation and has guaranteed universal suffrage since 1946. It is a federation with five provinces, which share power and sovereignty with the federal government based in Seattle. Its system of government is unique, being described as a combination of the Westminster system and the federal system of the former United States.
