The '''Republic of Kaidou''' (灰道共和國, Kaidou Kyouwakoku), is a landlocked country situated in eastern Verdantis. Its territory largely follows the Kaidou valley, which constitutes a vital trade route through the NAME PENDING mountains, commonly referred to as the Ash Road. Exhibiting one of the lowest percentages of arable land of any country worldwide, the inhabitants of the Kaidou region have historically been forced to develop highly specialised types of economic activities, leading to the emergence of unique traditions and rich culture. Whilst its rough terrain and harsh climatic conditions continue to impose challenges on the country, its natural beauty has been marvelled at for millennia.

Historically, Kaido ranked amongst the most sparsely-populated nations in the world, largely due a limitation to subsistence farming. Consequences thereof are still visible to today, with the majority of its population concentrated in several towns and cities along the Ash Road. Of the export goods commonly associated with Kaidou, namely gunpowder, its ingredients (sulfur, charcoal, saltpeter), paper, firearms, iron, and wood (particularly fir), only the latter two play a major economic role nowadays, with the former still being produced in lower quantities, particularly as luxury goods of the highest quality. Nowadays, its largest source of income is the ''New Ash Road Train'' (新灰道車, Shinkaidousha), a high-speed cargo train network bisecting the NAME PENDING mountains, following the historical Ash Road. The levying transit taxes on wares transported through its territory are a stable source of income for the Republic of Kaidou, as circumventing the Ash Road would be prohibitively expensive and economically unviable in the greater context of trade throughout Verdantis. Further, tourism has become a major sector of the national economy, with the Republic of Kaidou having become a major destination for winter sports.

The Republic of Kaidou is further noteworthy for being one of the first nations worldwide to guarantee universal suffrage, tracing the history of its egalitarian practices to its era of stratocracy. Whilst matters of national importance were decided by a group of feudal lords then ruling the country, the scarcity of food and resulting low birth rates led to leadership positions within families being inherited to the eldest child regardless of gender. When Kaido invited foreign experts to help it modernise throughout the late 19th and early 20th century and transitioned to a republican style of government, male-only voting rights were seen as exotic and unreasonable by Kaidoujin, leading to the Constitution of the Republic of Kaidou being the first legal document of such kind worldwide to guarantee equal rights between men and women.

Despite its historically low population and fragile agricultural sector, the Kaidou managed to maintain its independence from surrounding powers by virtue of its inhospitable climate, its inaccessible yet well-defensible geography, and by presenting itself as a reliable trade partner and supplier of sought-after goods, such weaponry and gunpowder. Nonetheless, as Kaidou constitutes a geostrategically crucial area, it maintains an extensive network of defensive measures throughout its territory, including emergency measures to impede potential invading forces by triggering landslides or avalanches or sabotage its own transport infrastructure by means of strategically placed explosive charges. Conscription is universal throughout the Kaidou Republic.

==Etymology==
The Republic of Kaidou derives its name from the eponymous trade route crossing the NAME PENDING moutains, the Ash Road (灰道, ''Kaidou''). The Ash Road, in turn, derives its name from atmospheric ashfall commonly observable in the region caused by the widespread charcoal manufacture.

==History==
===Pre-Shogunate History===
Placeholder
===Shogunate Era===
The Kaidou Shogunate is comprised of several feudal domains (han), each administered by a feudal lord (daimyo). A daimyo is usually the head of a clan belonging to the warrior caste, and thus a hereditary title. A shogun is elected among the daimyo upon the previous shogun's death to carry out administrative duties on a national level as well as coordinate and foster unity between the individual daimyo. Commonly the heir of the previous shogun is elected to follow in their predecessor's steps, albeit this is largely dependent on the perceived strength of their clan and claim, the assessment of their ancestor's rein, and a complex web of political allegiances and intrigues. The Kaidou Shogunate is further notable for bestowing political rights upon women, and inheritances (including hereditary titles) passing to the eldest child regardless of gender.

The term ''bakufu'' (幕府) literally translates to "tent government", originally referred to the households of local feudal lords, with the tent symbolising the lords' roles as field commanders and the theoretically temporary nature of such offices. The term instead came to describe the system of feudal military dictatorship governing the country.
==Government==
==Foreign Relations==
==Military==
==Economy==
The economy of the Kaidou Shogunate can be roughly divided into several major sectors, with the most notable being the production of gunpowder, charcoal, paper, silk, and silk-based textiles, as well as forestry, iron processing, firearm manufacture, and customs taxes.

The Ash Road is surrounded by tall and rugged mountains and nearly impassable in winter due to extreme snowfalls. As the ruggedness of the terrain does not provide enough opportunity for rice cultivation, agriculture in the Kaidou Shogunate is limited to subsistence farming, even with supplements of buckwheat or millet. The combination of remoteness, seasonal isolation, and lack of economically viable land led to the emergence of gasshou-dzukuri (合掌造り, ''"praying hands construction"''), an architectural style common throughout the Shogunate. This special type of multi-level farmhouse is designed to withstand the harsh climatic conditions, with steep, thatched, slanted roofs easily shedding off snow, and multiple floors, usually three to four, maximising the functional area available for economic activities. The lower floors are usually used for the production of paper and gunpowder, whereas attics commonly house extensive silkworm farms. The latter require vast reserves of food, particularly mulberry leaves, which are stored in separate rooms. Each farmhouse is usually inhabited by a multi-generation household. A farmhouse's roof needs to be re-thatched every 30-40 years, thus making it the duty of each generation to re-thatch the house once. This process is very expensive and resource-intensive. Therefore, a settlement's population collaborates on the maintenance of each building, forming a social contract eliminating the need for monetary compensation. Travellers witnessing this process have described it as "spectacular", with up to 100 people working on one roof simultaneously.

Forestry forms a further crucial sector of the Kaidou Shogunate's economy, as it provides raw material for the construction of settlements, goods manufacture, and firewood. Wast mountainsides have been clear-cut, providing access to near-surface iron, nitre and phosphorus deposits, but also significantly increasing the risk of landslides, particularly during the thawing period. The vast majority of wood harvested throughout the shogunate is used for charcoal manufacture, mostly in on-site kilns, with only a fraction of cut trees being designated as raw materials to be transported to nearby settlements. The giant fir is the most common naturally occurring tree throughout the Kaidou Shogunate, with mulberries being the most common cultivated one.

The availability of wood, iron, and the materials necessary for the production of gunpowder has led to the emergence of a firearms manufacturing industry, specifically producing hand cannons and matchlock muskets.

Due to the low availability of economically viable land and the low population density, the entire population of the Kaidou Shogunate is required to participate in economic activities, including commonly excluded groups, such as women and lepers. Professions typically practised by women include iron processing, firearms manufacturing, and weaving. The inclusion of women in the workforce has also led to their equal standing in the household and their political enfranchisement.

When the Ash Road is traversable during the summer months, customs taxes are levied from traversing merchants to finance the country's military which is tasked with providing security along the vital trade route. The shogunate takes care to maintain balance between levying taxes high enough to maintain its economy without damaging relations with its neighbour countries and merchants passing through its territory. Favourable trade relations with its neighbouring countries has historically played a major factor in maintaining the nation's independence.

Export goods from the Kaidou Shogunate are generally considered to be of high quality, particularly its papers, firearms and textiles are highly valued and sought after abroad.

One of the most valued import and barter goods throughout the Kaidou Shogunate is salt, favoured as a preservative for food stocks for the winter months.

==Etymology==

==History==
===Shogunate Era===

==Foreign Relations==
==Economy==

}}
The '''Kaidou Shogunate''' (Kaidou-ben: 灰道幕府, Kaidou bakufu), is a landlocked country situated in eastern Verdantis. Its territory largely follows the Kaidou valley, which constitutes a vital trade route through the NAME PENDING mountains, commonly known as the Ash Road. Exhibiting one of the lowest percentages of arable land of any country worldwide, the Kaidou Shogunate is dependent on food imports and has thus developed a highly specialised type of domestic industry adapted to its rough terrain and harsh climatic conditions. Merchants and travellers passing through the Kaidou Shogunate have described its lands to be of sublime beauty.

Due to its limitation to subsistence farming, the Kaidou Shogunate ranks amongst the most sparsely-populated nations in the world, with the majority of its population concentrated in several towns and cities along the Ash Road. The major exports of the Kaidou Shogunate are gunpowder, its ingredients (sulfur, charcoal, saltpeter), firearms, iron, wood (particularly fir), paper, and silk.

Despite its comparatively low population and fragile agricultural sector, the Kaidou Shogunate managed to maintain its independence from surrounding powers by virtue of its inhospitable climate, its inaccessible yet well-defensible geography, and by presenting itself as a reliable trade partner and supplier of sought-after goods, such weaponry and gunpowder.

==Etymology==
The Kaidou Shogunate derives its name from the eponymous trade route crossing the NAME PENDING moutains, the Ash Road (灰道, ''Kaidou''). The Ash Road, in turn, derives its name from atmospheric ashfall commonly observable in the region, caused by the widespread practice of charcoal manufacture.

The full term ''Kaidou bakufu'' (灰道幕府) can thus be roughly translated as "Ash Road Military Government" or "Ash Road Shogunate", referring to the commander-in-chief of the ''bakufu'', the shogun (将軍, "''general"'').

==Government==
==Foreign Relations==
==Military==
==Economy==

==Etymology==

The full term ''Kaidou bakufu'' (灰道幕府) can thus be roughly translated as "Ash Road Military Government" or "Ash Road Shogunate", referring to the commander-in-chief of the ''bakufu'', the shogun (将軍, "''general"'').

===Modern History===

==Government==
==Foreign Relations==
==Military==
==Economy==

Due to its limitation to subsistence farming, the Kaidou Shogunate ranks amongst the most sparsely-populated nations in the world, with the majority of the population concentrated in several towns and cities along the NAME PENDING trade route. The major exports of the Kaidou Shogunate are gunpowder, its ingredients (sulfur, charcoal, saltpeter), firearms, wood (particularly fir), paper, and silk.

Despite its comparatively low population and inability to sustain its own population without foreign imports, the Kaidou Shogunate managed to maintain its independence from surrounding powers by presenting itself as a reliable trade partner and supplier of weaponry and gunpowder. Products from Kaidou are generally considered to be of high quality and value.{{Infobox country

The Kaidou Shogunate (Kaidou-ben: 灰道幕府, Kaidou bakufu), is a landlocked country situated in eastern Verdantis. Its territory largely follows the NAME PENDING valley, which constitutes a vital trade route through the NAME PENDING mountains. Exhibiting one of the lowest percentages of arable land of any country worldwide, the Kaidou Shogunate is dependent on food imports and has thus developed a highly specialised type of domestic industry adapted to its rough terrain and harsh climatic conditions.
