Backen, the state's longest-serving Chief Minister, returned to office after an eight-year break to lead the Reform Alliance to the [[2026 West Mainland general election|next general election.]]

== Background ==
[[Eve Morris]] was elected leader of the [[Georgeland Alliance]]'s state branch in 2019, following the accidental death of [[Belinda Pang]], who had led the Alliance, and its coalition partner [[Reform]], into power at the election six months before. When the two parties merged to form the Reform Alliance in 2023, Morris was elected unopposed as the party's new state leader.

In March 2026, Morris, aged 67, announced her retirement from politics, intending to step down once a new leader was selected and not contest her seat at the upcoming election. As the outgoing leader, Morris did not endorse a candidate.

The candidate elected Chief Minister is expected to lead the party to the [[2026 West Mainland general election|state general election]], to be held in October 2026. Opinion polls for that election had the Reform Alliance in a poor position behind [[Agenda]], [[West Alternative]] and the [[Rally for Freedom]], leading some commentators to suggest Morris's retirement was a way of avoiding a significant, humiliating defeat.

== Procedure ==
Reform Alliance leaders, on the state and federal levels, are elected by the party's membership rather than by the elected representatives of the party. The party's state Executive is responsible for outlining the timing of the election, in line with the party's constitution. Eligibility to vote is limited only to those party members resident in East Mainland and who have been a financial member for longer than one year.

The formal nominations for leader closed on Friday, April 3. Four candidates officially nominated while two that had announced their intent to stand withdrew.

The election was held using the [[w:Instant-runoff_voting|instant-runoff]] method, with each eligble party member recieving a mail-in ballot in which they will number the four candidates in order of their preference. The candidate with the fewest first-choice votes is eliminated, with their second-choice votes allocated to the remaining candidates. When all but two have been eliminated, the remaining candidate with the most votes will be elected.

The party's deputy leader is selected by Reform Alliance MLAs. Party rules stipulate that a candidate for leader cannot be chosen as deputy leader until 12 months have elapsed. Since the incumbent deputy leader, Tim Parker, was a candidate, a new deputy leader, and thus Deputy Chief Minister, was also chosen.

Four candidates lodged official nominations for the election:

=== Adrian Bowman hoax nomination ===
On 30 March, GBC journalist Nora Ali mistakenly tweeted that one of the declared nominees was [[Adrian Bowman]], Leader of the Opposition in Capitalia and a member of the right-wing [[Rally for Freedom]]. Ali deleted her tweet soon afterwards and issued a correction, having mixed up Bowman's name with Elizabeth Daley's; given their different genders, critics suggested this was unlikely, but Ali explained it was due to the way her notes were organised; she was accused of having used artificial intelligence to generate the tweet.

Bowman himself tweeted that he was flattered by the nomination. On 1 April, April Fool's Day, Bowman announced that he would indeed be a candidate, stating that what West Mainland needed was a fresh start from an outsider. As he is not resident in the state, Bowman is not eligible to run. The following day, Bowman confirmed the nomination had been a joke, but that he hoped West Mainlanders would vote for the Rally at the upcoming elections no matter who won.

== Campaign ==
The official campaign period began once nominations had been accepted on 3 April. Each candidate based their campaign around a core pitch to voters and party members. Backen campaigned on his experience, emphasising his longevity in politics and his economic record. Daley, who represents a Zigit constituency, pledged to call a referendum on [[Zigrom movement|Zigrom statehood]] if elected, while Parker's campaign emphasised his ability to connect to younger voters, having been elected as an independent in 2016 after losing Liberal Democratic endorsement. Bowers, the most right-wing of the leaders, campaigned on economic issues, pledging to reduce state taxes and change planning permission laws to enable more houses to be built to address the state's housing crisis.

Backen, the front runner, avoided criticism of any of his opponents, and each candidate largely avoided much emphasis on the government's record since they had been senior members of the cabinet. In response to his claims of longevity and experience, Bowers suggested Backen was not fully committed to the party since he had begun as a Conservative and defected, which she implied was a strategy to remain in power. Parker, who had been a Liberal Democrat, also suggested Backen's conservative roots were a political liability, though he avoided direct criticism.

There were two televised debates between the candidates; one airing on [[GBC-TV]] on 26 April, and another on Sky News on 31 May. All four candidates took part in each debate, moderated respectively by [[John Ainsley]] and [[Katy Long]]. Audience surveys judged Backen the winner of both debates, with 43% of respondents in the first and 52% in the second selecting him as the winner. In the second debate, Parker attracted scorn and ridicule, mostly from online commentary, by comparing himself to New York City Mayor [[w:Zohran_Mamdani|Zohran Mamdani]]; Parker is 14 years older than Mamdani, not Muslim, and of European heritage.

== Opinion polls ==
A poll conducted by polling firm Wilson-Hedges was published on 30 March, before nominations had closed. The poll showed 30% of respondents preferred Backen as Chief Minister, over 16% for Parker and 10% for Daley, with 44% undecided or unsure.

Backen, while failing to win a majority of first preferences as predicted, easily won over Parker in the final count. Analysis of the preference flow suggests Daley's votes flowed almost entirely to Bowers, but both finished well short of the final two.

Backen's win was announced at a special conference on 18 June, at which he was confirmed by acclamation. The same day, Reform members of the Legislative Assembly elected Simon Roderick unopposed as Deputy Leader. Backen's new ministry, which included Daley and Bowers in similar roles, was sworn in on 22 June by [[Governor of West Mainland|Governor]] [[Peter Morris]]. Parker, at his own request, was not appointed to the ministry; on 24 June he declared he would not seek re-election at the upcoming general election and would instead run to become [[Mayor of Santa Christina]] at the [[2028 Santa Christina mayoral election|2028 municipal election]].

Pearce's main opponents were the [[Protectionist Party (Georgeland)|Protectionists]], whose policies and party structure were much more loosely defined than that of the Conservatives, but had loosely organised around trade protectionism, as opposed to the Tories who broadly supported free trade and abolition of tariffs. The Protectionists had no leader in the formal sense, but [[Alexander McGough]] was their chief spokesman and would presumably have been commissioned to form a government had the Protectionists won enough seats to do so. The party had only recently been formed from a number of protectionist-leaning and anti-government members in the Legislative Assembly and had little national presence, having been based mostly in Mainland.

The third party, which would gain much more prominence later, was the [[United Islands Labour Party]], led by [[Robert McClutcheon]]. Though it had a (mostly) binding caucus and federal structure, the Labour Party was chiefly composed of various trade union groups. It did not contest the elections under the same name in every state, and while McClutcheon had been chosen as the party's chief spokesman at a special conference in late July, several other people had contradicted and campaigned almost completely separately from McClutcheon. McClutcheon failed to win election to the House of Commons and was succeeded by [[George Harding]] as leader.

== Campaign ==
The parties largely agreed on major issues, which were mainly the establishment of national institutions such as a bank, defence force and Supreme Court. There was little dispute over the necessity of these new institution or even the method by which they should achieve, with the most contentious point being on trade policy. The Conservatives favoured free trade but the Protectionists argued tariffs were required to ensure the economic protection of Georgelanders against the importation of goods and labour. These issues were not new in 1891 and indeed had been debated vigorously in the decades leading to the adoption of Georgeland's independent constitution.

Pearce campaigned mostly in Weston and Doubledance, rarely returning to his home city of Emilypolis. He launched the Conservative campaign at the Royal Theatre in Weston, pledging that the new 'Federal Union' (as the constitution defined the country) would have little impact on the day-to-day governance, but that the most critical element was to maintain a strong economic position and to ensure the country continued to be 'governed for the British race'. Despite this, under pressure from London, Pearce explicitly rejected a proposal to restrict non-British migration.

The Protectionists had no formal campaign launch and focused instead on local issues. The majority of their candidates, though endorsed by the party, were only loosely affiliated with it. Most Protectionists ran purely on opposition to the Conservatives, who had been in power since self-government (with only a brief exception).

However, the margin of victory was much smaller than had been anticipated, with the Tories winning 64 out of 120 seats, a majority of only eight. The Protectionists won 35 seats, and thus became the official opposition, while Labour's nineteen seats gave it a significant presence in the Commons. Two independents - [[Henry Ackerman]] and [[Philip Mitchell]], were elected.
The new Senate was heavily dominated by the Conservatives, with some of the party's candidates recording extremely high personal votes. This was in part due to Pearce's insistence that his supporters pay equal or greater attention to the Senate, as the concept of an elected upper house was new and Pearce sought to ensure his party retained control of it, since he was not able to appoint its members as had been the case for the colonial Legislative Council.

He subsequently served as a military adviser to the government before attempting to re-enter the Commons in 1880, but was defeated in Mayo by Charles Stewart Parnell, whom he considered a rival. He returned to Georgeland by way of India and Hong Kong, where he spent several years working for colonial administrations. In 1883 he arrived in Weston again and established himself as a financier before accepting an appointment by Governor Antony MacDonnell (no relation to Richard) to command the Queen's Georgeland Rifles, the local regiment set up to defend the archipelago. In 1888, Bingham succeeded to the Earldom and returned to London to take up his seat in the House of Lords.

The '''Prime Minister of Georgeland''' is appointed by the [[President of Georgeland]] and is responsible to the [[Georgeland House of Commons|House of Commons]]. The Prime Minister is the leader and chair of the [[Cabinet of Georgeland|Cabinet]], and along with the cabinet is considered the primary adviser to the president and the head of government. The prime minister's position is explicitly mandated in the [[Constitution of Georgeland|constitution]], and while it is possible for senators to serve in the position, all prime ministers have been members of the House of Commons. The office originated in 1891, although the official term 'prime minister' only became official around 1910.

There have been 30 prime ministers since 1901, twenty-seven men and three women. Georgeland, along with the [[w:United_Kingdom|United Kingdom]] and [[w:New_Zealand|New Zealand]], has had more women heads of government than any other country. Four people - [[Frederick Eccles]], [[Nathan Keegan]], [[Stanley Baynes]] and [[Noel Quarton]] - have served two non-consecutive periods as prime minister and one, [[Charlton Robards]], served three. Four prime ministers - [[David Turner]], Frederick Eccles, [[James Gray]] and [[Bradley Van Goen]] - died in office.

The youngest prime minister, Charlton Robards, took office aged 32. The oldest, Frederick Eccles, died in office aged 75. The longest-serving prime minister by total time in office was Noel Quarton, though Sir [[Robert Pearce]] served slightly less time in a single period. The shortest-serving prime minister, [[Michael Fisch]], served 47 days as a caretaker leader in 1999 - the shortest tenure of a prime minister appointed on a permanent basis is that of [[Clare Price]], who served just under six months.

Situated on Emily's Island, a large land mass in the centre of [[Lough Neagh, Scoita|Lough Neagh]], a vast shallow lake, the city is almost at the state's geographic centre. With a population of around 3.5 million, it is Georgeland's third-largest city. The Emilypolis Metropolitan Area, with a population of 4.3 million, includes satellite cities on the Scoitan mainland around Lough Neagh, including [[Belfast, Scoita|Belfast]], [[Hockford, Scoita|Hockford]], [[Garrington, Scoita|Garrington]], [[Smithfield, Scoita|Smithfield]], [[Trafalgar, Scoita|Trafalgar]] and [[Bootle, Scoita|Bootle]]. The '''City of Emilypolis''' local government area, codeterminous with Emily's Island, governs the city proper while the outer areas of the metropolis are separately managed by their own councils.

Emilypolis was founded in 1815 by [[w:Anglo-Irish_people|Anglo-Irish]] settlers who named it for the wife and daughter of the British Lieutenant-Governor, [[Charles Francis Montgomery]], both of whom were named Emily. The first settlers established an agricultural community on Emily's Island which, despite being relatively inaccessible, was highly fertile with its location also being highly suitable for a military garrison to defend the centre of the island, and Fort Montgomery was established as a defence position in anticipation of the island's invasion by either [[w:First_French_Empire|Napoleonic France]] or, after the downfall of Napoleon, [[w:Russian_Empire|Imperial Russia]]. The settlement grew quickly and was the second-largest in Georgeland by 1850, although it shortly lost that position to [[Santa Christina|Weston]], but remained the island's most prosperous settlement, its geographic location making it an ideal trade hub. When Georgeland was made a British Dominion in 1891, Emilypolis was chosen as the capital of the new state of Scoita. An influx of Irish migrants during the late 19th and early 20th century gave the city much of its cultural uniqueness; it is the only major Georgeland city where Catholicism is the most common religion. During World War II Emilypolis was the site for much of Georgeland's wartime co-ordination including the training of new recruits, and while it was never attacked, the city had strong air defences to prevent aerial bombardment by Japan, and while an inland city it was the headquarters of the Georgeland Navy during the war due to its proximity to the war theatre. After the war, immigration greatly increased the population, especially from the 1960s, and by the 1980s Emilypolis had large minority communities of [[Indian Georgelanders|Indians]], [[Pakistani Georgelanders|Pakistanis]], [[Black Georgelanders|Africans]] and [[Arab Georgelanders|Arabs]], which it retains to this day. In 2024, 28% of Emilypolis' population was born overseas.

Situated as it is on an island, Emilypolis has a distinct maritime culture despite being inland, with the city's ferry system being its most popular mode of non-road transportation. The first rail bridge did not connect the island to the mainland until 1886, and the first road bridge was opened only in 1900. Only two road bridges connect the city to the mainland even in the modern era, with the [[Smithfield Bridge]] being the second-longest, and busiest, bridge in Georgeland.

Emilypolis is a popular tourist destination and an arts and cultural hub, as well as home to some of the country's most popular sporting teams.

Emilypolis was named jointly for '''Emily Elizabeth Montgomery''' (1772-1843), the wife of the then-Lieutenant Governor, Charles Francis Montgomery, along with their daughter, '''Amelia Emily Montgomery''' (1797-1849), who was known as Emily. Emily's Island on which the city stands was likewise named for the Montgomerys. The suffix '-''polis''<nowiki/>' to mean 'city' is rare in English-speaking countries but was chosen as an homage to Greek civilisation, of which several of the city's founders were scholars.

While formally prounounced ''EM-il-LEE-POL-iss'', as spelled, locals usually pronounce the city ''EM-lip-LISS'', as is typical for Scoitan accented speakers. In colloquial speech, and occasionally in official correspondence, the city is referred to by the abbreviation 'Empol'.

Emily's Island, Emilypolis proper, is highly urbanised with significant high density housing. The city has the highest population density of any metropolitan area in Georgeland, akin to that of [[w:New_York_City|New York City.]]

Emilypolis is governed by the [[Emilypolis City Council]], with the '''City of Emilypolis''' being the official governing entity. The City's jurisdiction includes all of Emily's Island, while transport routes across the lake are also subject to its jurisdiction where the state government has delegated this authority, though rail is always a state matter. The City of Emilypolis is responsible for the Lough Neagh ferry system, which has stops and infrastructure in the sattelite cities; these stops are managed by Emilypolis rather than the local authority. The City of Emilypolis, with a population of around 3.5 million, is the largest local government in Scoita and includes about 80% of the metropolitan population.

The [[Mayor of Emilypolis]] is the city's directly-elected chief executive. The mayor is a relatively powerful office by Georgeland standards, with a significant amount of authority delegated to the mayor's office by state governments. The current Mayor, [[Fawzia Siddiqi Khan]], is the third woman mayor, the first Asian mayor, the first Muslim mayor, and the youngest mayor ever elected.

Due to demographical changes over time, Emilypolis trends towards a more left-wing polity than other areas of the state, but still has a considerable base of conservative voters. In the House of Commons, it is represented by 15 members across three constituencies. Four of those members are from the centrist [[Georgeland Reform Alliance]] including its leader, [[Prime Minister of Georgeland|Prime Minister]] [[Tom Elderton]]. Two represent the right-wing [[Rally for Freedom]], including its deputy leader [[Carrie Molina]], and two the [[Conservative Party of Georgeland|Conservative Party]]. Four of the Emilypolis MPs represent the left-wing [[Agenda (party)|Agenda]] party, with the remaining two political independents allied to Agenda. At the 2025 federal election, Emilypolis' voting patterns roughly matched those of Scoita and Georgeland in general with Agenda winning just under 20%, the Reform Alliance 16.5, right-wing parties 31% and other left parties 20%. The Independent vote was considerably higher given the high personal vote for [[Janet Bolt]], who won a position for herself and for her running mate, [[Scott Shane]].

In the state [[Legislative Assembly of Scoita|Legislative Assembly]], Emilypolis is represented by 24 members, representing four constituencies. The Reform Alliance holds six of those seats, the far-right National Front five, the right-wing Rally for Freedom and Conservatives four and two respectively, the Agenda three and its junior partners Vox and the Liberal Democrats one each, and two for the far-left [[Socialist Workers Party of Georgeland|Socialist Workers Party]].

At the 2026 state election, the vote was heavily fragmented across the city and marked by low turnout. Four of the Emilypolis MPs represent the left-wing [[Agenda (party)|Agenda]] party, with the remaining two political independents allied to Agenda. At the 2025 federal election, Emilypolis' voting patterns roughly matched those of Scoita and Georgeland in general with Agenda winning just under 20%, the Reform Alliance 16.5, right-wing parties 31% and other left parties 20%. The Independent vote was considerably higher given the high personal vote for [[Janet Bolt]], who won a position for herself and for her running mate, [[Scott Shane]].

In the state [[Legislative Assembly of Scoita|Legislative Assembly]], Emilypolis is represented by 24 members, representing four constituencies. The Reform Alliance holds six of those seats, the far-right National Front five, the right-wing Rally for Freedom and Conservatives four and two respectively, the Agenda three and its junior partners Vox and the Liberal Democrats one each, and two for the far-left [[Socialist Workers Party of Georgeland|Socialist Workers Party]].

At the 2026 state election, the vote was heavily fragmented across the city and marked by low turnout. Left-wing parties including Agenda and Vox won just under 40% of the vote and right-wing parties including the Conservatives and Rally for Freedom 22%, while the far-right National Front had its best-ever result in the city with 19% of the vote. The governing Reform Alliance won 22.5% of the vote.

Emilypolis is home to some of the country's most popular sports teams, particularly in [[Association football in Georgeland|association football]]. [[Emilypolis Football Club|Emilypolis FC]], the state's most successful club, have won the [[GFA Cup]] three times and topped the league three times, and since the league's opening season in 1964 are one of only four teams never to be relegated. The '''United Islands of [[Georgeland]]''' is a federation of six states and two federal territories as subnational political divisions, under the jurisdiction of the [[Constitution of Georgeland]]. ==History==
During the colonial period, the entire archipelago was administered centrally, first from [[Georgetown]] and later from [[Weston, West Mainland|Weston]]. As settlement spread, and with communication and travel between islands relatively difficult, each island became largely self-sufficient and autonomous. Despite this, movements for self-government on each were rare; Mainland remained overwhelmingly the largest and most prosperous island, and separation from its economy, even informally, was seen as counterproductive. Relatively strong local governments filled some of the role of colonial authorities. As communication and travel became easier, and populations grew, some regional autonomy became inevitable and from 1864 a Lieutenant Governor, subordinate to the colonial [[Governor-General of Georgeland|Governor]], was appointed to each island other than Mainland; the islands nonetheless remained outside the framework of responsible government, and did not have their own legislatures or officials, continuing to be governed by the colonial administration in Weston.

During negotiations for Georgeland's self-government, it became apparent that the smaller islands, Bradmarch and Long Island in particular, were lukewarm on the concept. One of Bradmarch's delegates to the constitutional convention of 1888, [[Walter Bannerman]] (later [[Chief Minister of Bradmarch]]), spoke against self-government on the basis that it would make 'all our islands slaves', fearing any self-governing authority, outside direct instruction from London, would be almost entirely focused on Mainland. Another delegate, Walter Macintyre of New Ireland (as [[Capitalia]] was then known) had a more nuanced view, and proposed a bicameral parliament replacing the appointed Legislative Council with an elected Senate with equal representation for each island. This idea eventually gained traction, and a proposal that each island become a semi-autonomous province, along the lines of the Canadian model, was eventually passed by the convention.

By the time of the 1890 convention, which formally ratified the new constitution, provinces had instead become states after redrafting (mostly due to resistance to the concept of colonial provinces from Irish nationalists) and a co-operative federal nation declared. The new constitution specifically laid down rules for adding new states, including a provision to include, with their consent, the Australian colonies, Ceylon, and Mauritius (though none of these proposals were ever seriously considered).

Each of the new states was, throughout 1890 and 1891, set up with infrastructure and systems that allowed them to become self-governing from 1 July 1891. For the first half-century of independence, there was general satisfaction despite Mainland's continued dominance of the economy and body politic. One constitutional mechanism to address the latter was the 'Mainland rule' built into the Elections Act, which mandated that no one state could hold more than 50% of the seats in the House of Commons, regardless of its population. This ultimately meant a disproportionate representation of smaller states, but was instrumental in ensuring the outer states were considered as equal components of the nation.

Proposals for new states have emerged periodically, usually in response to the domination of the Mainland states. The most predominant movements since 2000 has been the '[[Zigrom movement]]', advocating for a state based around Zigit and Romphumburg, West Mainland's second and third largest cities located in the state's central east, and the [[Lyle statehood movement]], which advocates a state around the southern Bay of Lyle, centred on Lylecity. These two movements have some similar goals, and recent discourse has suggested the two movements may unite in favour of a 'Central Mainland' concept, separating the regions around the two large coastal metropolises from the island's more agrarian central regions.

===Zigrom===
The term 'Zigrom' is a portmanteau of [[Zigit]] and [[Romphumburg]], the second and third largest metropolitan areas in West Mainland. Both cities have suffered from economic problems since the 1970s, and this has led to calls for a new state centred on those cities, rather than being governed from either Santa Christina or Doubledance. Central Mainland is a significant primary producer and a state focused on Zigit and Romphumburg would contain much of the region's agriculture, but would suffer from a lack of manufacturing industry and access to the coast, unless borders were extended to the Bay of Lyle or the southern Indian Ocean.

===The Lyle===
The Bay of Lyle is central to Georgeland's economy and its fishing industry, as well as a major tourist destination due to its beaches. Residents of the area have long felt isolated from the state capital - this has remained true since the subdivision as Lylecity, the region's main port and largest city, is more or less equidistant from each coast and thus far from the state capital both before and after Mainland split into two states. With a more agrarian economy than other regions, the Lyle is often considered as the most viable new state as it would be relatively self-sufficient, although it does suffer from a lack of natural resources.

====Central Mainland====
Proponents of either Zigrom or Lyle statehood have recently explored a combined push for a new 'Central Mainland' state, including Romphumburg, Lylecity, Usk and Zigit, and stretching as far as the southern coast. While this state would have a strong focus on primary production, it would have a relatively small population compared to East and West Mainland, and regional rivalries would likely cause a dispute around where to base the government. Nonetheless the movement has gained traction in recent years. At the 2025 election, [[Agenda (party)|Agenda]] formally pledged to explore a Lyle/Zigrom state if elected to government but that it would be up to residents to decide on issues such as where the capital would be and how the government would be structured.

===Emily's Island===
The Emily's Island Party advocates for the entire City of [[Emilypolis]], codeterminous with [[Emily's Island]], to become a separate state. The city is physically separated from the remainder of the state and the metropolitan region by [[Lough Neagh (Scoita)|Lough Neagh]]; since the 1970s there have been four road or rail crossings, but there were none before the 1920s. Emilypolis has been economically powerful in comparison to the rest of Scoita since even before 1891, however, it is heavily dependent on the remainder of the state's agriculture. The city is also, historically, more progressive than the outer suburbs on the shores of the lake, which has led to calls for a more formal division between them. The movement has some support outside the city as the rural areas of the state have often been called 'provincial'; with power literally centralised (by geography) in the state's centre, some cultural division and resentment has fostered. As Emilypolis accounts for around 60% of the state's population and 75% of its economy, most experts consider secession to be unlikely.

===Metropolitan separation===
Even before Mainland's subdivision, there have been calls for the largest metropolitan regions of [[Santa Christina]] and [[Doubledance]] to be separated from the agrarian interior of the island. This movement was particularly strong in Doubledance, which was the state's largest city and had a much more industrial economy than Santa Christina, focused around finance and tourism. From the 1920s Doubledance grew exponentially as various local government amalgamations subsumed smaller, satellite cities to the effect that the [[Doubledance City Council]] had a budget higher than most states. In the years following the Second World War the boom and bust economic cycle affected Doubledance to a greater extent than most of the country. With limited interest in dividing the state (and thus losing the state's political dominance), Doubledance came to be seen, especially by residents, as a distinct region with its own culture and economic challenges. The 2000 division of Mainland into two new states largely caused any movement on Doubledance statehood to peter out, although a strong city-rural divide remains. The [[Vox]]-led [[Singh Government (East Mainland)|state government]] established, in 2023, the '''[[Greater Doubledance Metropolitan Authority]]''' (GDMA) which centralised aspects of some state and local administration across the entire city region.

===Huzzah and Otway ===
The strong industrial economy of [[Huzzah]] and the Mainland northeast, including the [[Otway Coast]], has led to some calls for its separation. Since the 1970s, during which Huzzah's economy began to diversify in response to global economic factors, these calls became less prominent as the city began to rely more on the rest of the state's economy.

===Delmago Island===
The revocation of Delmago Island's statehood, which had been granted 62 years previously, was controversial. At the [[2021 Delmago Island statehood referendum|2021 referendum]], just over 40% voted to retain statehood, with revocation winning by only 213 votes. Opponents of revocation have pointed to the loss of the island's senate power, and the failure of the federal government to provide the stimulus necessary to revitalise the island's economy. The [[Federal Territories (Delmago Island) Act 2021]] was amended by the senate to remove the proposed office of Lieutenant Governor, which had been agreed upon by negotiations, instead placing the territory directly under the federal government's control. This change has led to dissent among the island's population. A poll in 2024 suggested 56% of Delmago Islanders believed statehood should be reinstated. In response to the poll, [[Chief Minister of Delma|Chief Minister]] [[Jim O'Connor]], who had opposed revocation, said that he believed the status quo needed to be reviewed, but that he believed statehood was impractical and unlikely.

===Federal District===
Section 39 of the [[Georgeland Constitution]] specifically declares the seat of government to be under federal control. Nonetheless, some advocate for the Federal District to be given statehood or at least the equal status of a state. The [[Federal District Self-Government Act 2014|Federal District Self-Government Act]] of 2014 mitigated some of these demands by creating the [[Legislative Council of the Federal District of Georgegeland|District's Legislative Council]] and implementing self-government, but the District remains under federal jurisdiction. One recent proposal has suggested truncating federal control only for the parliamentary zone and major government buildings, retroceding most of suburban [[Topstad]] back to Capitalia. A poll in 2019 said only 16% of District residents wished to become a state, although 38% expressed no opinion.

The team's nickname of '''Canaries''' comes from the yellow of their home strip; in periods of poor performance, the nickname has been applied somewhat perjoritively, likening the team to the old practice of [[w:Sentinel_species|using canaries to detect gas leaks]] and implying a 'sacrificial' quality to the team's play. Georgeland have qualified for the FIFA World Cup seven times.

==== 1938 ====
At the time of the 1938 World Cup, held in France, Georgeland was considered part of Africa, although the its football confederation had yet to be formed. As part of the combined group for African, Asian and Oceanian teams, Georgeland qualified as the sixteenth team following a 2-0 defeat of the Dutch East Indies.

The tournament was a knockout competition with no group stage. For its first match on 5 June, Georgeland played against a powerhouse Hungarian team, managing a 1-1 draw by full-time, and advanced to the quarter-finals following a late second goal by captain George Koppel. On 12 June, Georgeland defeated Switzerland 1-0, with the winning goal scored in the 18th minute by Oliver McInnerny. This placed Georgeland in a difficult semi-final match against Sweden on 16 June; despite a strong start for Georgeland, the Swedish team won 2-1. This put Georgeland in the third-place playoff against Brazil, on 19 June at Bordeaux, which Brazil won 3-1. Georgeland finished fourth in the competition, a record performance it would equal in 1966 but to date have not exceeded.

==== 1954 ====
Georgeland failed to qualify for the 1950 World Cup - the 1942 and 1946 competitions had been cancelled due to World War II. Still at this time considered part of Africa (despite the geographical, and demographic differences), Georgeland was added to the Asian group qualifiers. Georgeland defeated Japan 2-0 and South Korea 3-1, securing its finals position for the tournament, held in Switzerland.

For its opening match, on 17 June, Georgeland again faced Hungary, this time being defeated 5-0 by the 'Magical Magyars', the tournament's eventual runner-up. This match essentially ended Georgeland's chances of advancement; a defeat 1-0 by by Turkey on 20 June saw sthe team eliminated.

==== 1966 ====
Due to a boycott of most African nations, in protest of there being no automatic place in the finals for an African team, Georgeland's road to qualification was relatively easy. Having failed to quality in 1958 and 1962, Georgeland faced only a small number of Asian teams, finishing atop its qualifying group. It was drawn into Group 4, playing the Soviet Union, Italy and Chile. The Canaries were defeated by the USSR in their first match, the 4-0 defeat being its heaviest at a World Cup finals tournament to that time, but drew 2-2 against Chile and defeated Italy 1-0, placing them second in their group (behind the USSR) and placing them into the quarter-finals. In their match against Portugal, on 23 July, Georgeland were 2-2 at full-time but won 3-2 after extra time following a goal by Eric Boone.

In the semi-final, Georgeland faced host nation, and eventual eventual champions, England, at Wembley Stadium and were defeated 3-1. They thus entered, for the second time, the third-place playoff, which pitten them once again against the Soviet Union. In this rematch of the first game, the USSR repeated their victory, but only by 2-1. Georgeland repeated its 1938 achievement of fourth place, one yet to be exceeded.

Georgeland qualified for the 2026 tournament, held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, topping Group C in the second and third qualification rounds with 11 and 20 points respectively. A 3-1 loss to Saudi Arabia on 10 September 2024 was demoralising, but hopes improved with a 3-0 victory against Australia, in Sydney, on 10 October. Further victories against South Korea and Japan cemented Georgeland's place atop its group and it qualified as one of nine Asian teams, alongside Australia, Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Uzbekistan.

Georgeland was drawn into Group B, with matches against Canada, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Switzerland. On 13 June in Santa Clara, Switzerland won a 3-0 victory, including an own goal from keeper Tim Oliver, and the loss was compounded by a 2-1 defeat by Canada in Vancouver on 18 June. On 24 June, Georgeland defeated Bosnia & Herzegovina 4-2 in their final group match in Seattle. The team's nickname of '''Canaries''' comes from the yellow of their home strip; in periods of poor performance, the nickname has been applied somewhat perjoritively, likening the team to the old practice of [[w:Sentinel_species|using canaries to detect gas leaks]] and implying a 'sacrificial' quality to the team's play. Nonetheless the team is affectionately celebrated, especially in more recent years as the team has met with more success.

The '''Head of Government of the Federal District of Georgeland''' is the leader of the government of [[Topstad]], [[United Islands of Georgeland|Georgeland's]] capital city. The office was established in 2016.

Georgeland's [[Federal District (Georgeland)|Federal District]] is a self-governing territory under federal jurisdiction but with its own legislative body, the [[Legislative Council of the Federal District of Georgeland|Legislative Council]]. The Council is unique among Georgeland legislatures in that it elects the Head of Government from among its members - in all other jurisdictions the head of government is appointed by the state Governor (or the federal Territories Minister) based on the numbers in the legislature.

The Head of Government is elected by the Council at the beginning of every legislative term (after an election) or when the office becomes vacant. The office is roughly akin to a state Chief Minister, however, Topstad no longer has a city council or local government, so the Head of Government can be said to fulfil some of the functions of a mayor. The Head of Government appoints members of the city administration and cabinet, who have the titles of Commissioners but are the equivalent to ministers in other jurisdictions.

The current Head of Government is [[Lance Kite]] MLC, who was elected on 26 May 2026. He is the first independent to hold the office.
