The National Democratic Party of Astoria (NDP) is a center-right to right-wing political party in Astoria comprised of a broad coalition of liberal conservatives, social conservatives, nationalists, and anti-landonists. It emerged in the early 20th century as the successor to the institutionally dominate Frontier Party and is the modern political rival to the Progressive–Labor Party.
On ideological terms, the National Democratic Party is placed on the center right to right wing of the political spectrum. As of 2023, the party holds a majority in the Senate with 14 seats and forms the minority in the House of Representatives with 44 seats. Of the 12 governors, 7 are members of the party. A total of TBD presidents were members of the National Democratic Party; the most recent of which is incumbent president Brendan Shepard, who was elected in 2018. The party is a member of the American Conservative Coalition in the American Parliament and the International Democrat Union. It is the political opponent of the Progressive–Labor Party, both of which form the two-party system...
History
Establishment (1909-1926)
Established in 1909 by defecting members of the Frontier Party. Opposed to the Carousel Regime of Gerhardt Astor, the National Democrats garnered support from farmers, small business owners, and immigrants from the United Commonwealth, Canada and Northern Europe. Throughout the Carousel Regime, the the National Democratic Party remained in the opposition but supported the immigration policies, anti-landonist and anti-union policies of Gerhardt Astor. It supported the most significant opening of immigration to Astoria, by passing the 1917 Astorian Immigration Act. In the 1918 elections the Frontier collapsed, with a majority of its members joining the National Democratic Party. Ernest Anderson was elected as the second President of Astoria and the party assumed a majority in both houses of the National Assembly. From 1918 to 1926 it was the dominate party in Astoria, opposing the left-wing Labor Party and the center-left Progressive Party. Ernest Anderson and several high ranking members of the party signed the Astorian Proclamation, affirming political support to immigration policies that prohibited non-European, socialists and communists from entering Astoria. New Greenbacks from the Sierran Styxie, who opposed the Sierran Cultural Revolution migrated en masse as a result from the policies of the National Democratic Party. White Sierran immigrants, after achieving citizenship voted almost exclusively for the either the Labor or Progressive parties leading to the victory of the unified Progressive–Labor Party in the 1926 elections.
