The premise of Pas Éclairé is simple; this alternate history looks at a possible world where the Enlightenment did not take root in the 1600s-1700s.
Point of Divergnce
17th-18th Century - The philosophes either never existed in the first place, or simply never became influential in European society.
Timeline
- 1543-1689 - The Scientific Revolution would most likely have still occurred. However, unlike in OTL, the Scientific Revolution and the Renaissance do not lead to the formation Enlightenment.
- 17th-18th Century - The philosophes either never existed in the first place, or simply never became influential in European society.
- 1688-89 - Unlike in OTL, the Glorious Revolution in England proved to be a failure, meaning that King James II did not get disposed. This in turn causes documents related to the Enlightenment, such as the English Bill of Rights, to never have been created. This also means the English monarchy never surrenders its power to the Parliament.
- 1751-72 - The famous work, Encyclopédie had never been published or even existed.
- ~1770-1780 - The Industrial Revolution starts in the United Kingdom. However, unlike in OTL, the Industrial Revolution would most likely have occurred later, due to technological progress in this timeline being slightly slower.
- 1765-83 - The American Revolution had never happened, causing the Thirteen Colonies to remain as a part of the British Empire, and for the concept of the United States to never exist.
- Late 18th Century - Despite this, uprisings would still likely happen in the Thirteen Colonies due to religious tensions, particularly in New England. These uprisings would be supported by the Netherlands due to the Anglo-Dutch Wars, as well as Protestantism. This would make New England become under the Dutch sphere of influence.
- 1789-99 - Due to the philosophes and Enlightenment beliefs never internally causing tensions in France, The French Revolution had never occurred. Additionally, the French economy is in a much better shape due to the American Revolution not occuring either.
