Planet Codeine is a collaborative mixtape by Sierran rapper ZuWop and record producer Wonderkidd. It was released on May 1, 2015, by Republic Records, Sticks & Stones, and Avocado Records. It features guest appearances from Pluto, Freeway Tha Killa, Keisha Byrd, Yung Uzi Mane, Blastoff, Lil Jeremi, B Monie, and Zhaire Richardson. The mixtape was entirely produced by Wonderkidd, along with extra production from Matr1x, Quitmydayjob, Streetside, Nine5, Mo11y, and 9th Chamb3r.
A deluxe reissue of the mixtape was released on May 29, 2015, with this version being subsequently released on all streaming platforms.
Background and recording
In December 2012, shortly after the release of ZuWop's third studio album, WopWorld, he hinted at the release of a possible sequel in the form of WopWorld 2, with him previewing snippets of newly recorded music on bubbler. Music from these sessions, lasting roughly only a few weeks, began spreading online when hackers released unreleased songs from the album. This would ultimately lead to ZuWop scrapping WopWorld 2 all together in early 2013.
On January 2, 2013, after performing at the Black Gold Club in Bernheim, San Joaquin, ZuWop's tour bus was shot up with his tour manager, Kiante Floyd, being killed while he and four others were shot numerous times. While there were no arrests made, the shooting was widely believed to have been a result of the ongoing rap beef between ZuWop and rapper Tony Chainz. ZuWop would later be arrested after this incident, with a search of his tour bus revealing four illegal firearms, a pound of marijuana, and nearly seven liters of lean hidden in various Sprite bottles. This ultimately violated his probation, with him being arrested along with five others. ZuWop would initially plead not guilty, but was denied bond by the judge based on the judge describing ZuWop as a "danger to society for glorifying violence and drugs".
ZuWop would later accept a plea deal in October 2013, being sentenced to 24 months in prison and five years of supervised probation afterwards, but with time already served and good behaviour, would be released as early as late 2014. During his time in prison, ZuWop would reportedly listen to beats through the prison telephone to write songs to. After hearing beats by Black Stain Collective's Wonderkidd, ZuWop asked his manager to find the producer, leading to a picture of Wonderkidd, Matr1x, and Yung Uzi Mane alongside ZuWop while he was in prison to go viral in March 2014. With good behaviour, ZuWop would be released on house arrest in August 2014. Shortly after his release from prison, ZuWop would feature on Yung Uzi Mane's song, "Illuminati", from his third mixtape Can't Lose Vol. 2 (2014).
Release and promotion
On New Years' Eve 2014, ZuWop announced that he would be releasing five projects in 2015. On January 30, 2015, ZuWop released a collaborative EP with Gunn Killa titled Astronauts.
On April 3, 2015, ZuWop and Wonderkidd would respectively upload two songs from the album on their soundcloud accounts, with the former uploading "'04 Freestyle" and the latter uploading "Secure The Bag". On April 24, ZuWop tweeted a series of photos featuring himself and Wonderkidd in his home studio alongside rappers B Monie, Blastoff, Pluto, Keisha Byrd, and Yung Uzi Mane as well as producers Quitmydayjob, Nine5, 9th Chamb3r, and Streetside. The caption for the picture read "yall gotta ask the kidd when we gon drop the world". Two days before its release, Wonderkidd revealed the cover art, track listing and release date, with ZuWop reposting this on his respective social media.
In anticipation for the deluxe issue, a picture of ZuWop, Wonderkidd, and Pluto in the studio with Q-Lo was leaked onto the internet while a preview of Q-Lo's verse on the remix of "From Water To Codeine" was uploaded to Wonderkidd's bubbler.

Planet Codeine was met with generally positive reviews. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from professional publications, the album received an average score of 75, based on 22 reviews. Aggregator AnyDecentMusic? gave it 7.8 out of 10, based on their assessment of the critical consensus.
In a positive review, Shannon Wilcher of Music Box Magazine stated that "Planet Codeine gives the customer exactly what they're looking for, which is a tried-and-true art within itself, making it another quality offering in the San Jose legend's extensive catalog". Montana Kirsten of Sunset stated, "Produced by the underdog Wonderkidd alonside a few of trusted Styxie trap producers, Planet Codeine is gothic, narcotic and full of overcast skies". Sierra Media wrote of the album, "If you've followed ZuWop's recent moves, Planet Codeine is not unprecedented, but memorable music makes up for a lack of dexterity and gives the mixtape a strong sense of unique artistry". Chase McMullen of Sunset 40 commented that "There's no denying ZuWop has had more staying power in hip hop than some might have expected, but at the end of the day, Planet Codeine is a dull misstep." In another mixed review, Trent Clark of The Unionist concluded: "While the essential purpose of the album is never specified, Wop spends a ridiculous amount of time skeeting on Wonderkidd's tracks with no filter on the filler."
