Sandra Wood
Dr. Sandra Francesca Wood (b. August 7, 1947, Dannyburg), is a Georgeland politician, currently representing Long Island in the Georgeland Senate. Wood is a former Governor of Long Island. She was elected Governor in 1990, and re-elected in 1994, 1998 and 2002, unopposed in her last election. She retired in 2006, and sought election to the Senate the following year.
Prior to her election she had been head of the Georgeland Medical Association. A medical doctor by profession, Governor Wood has been an advocate for stem cell research in recent years. Governor Wood the longest-serving Governor in her state's history.
In 2004, following the resignation of Hank Reynolds as President of Georgeland, some argued that Governor Wood was next-in-line to the position, due to her status as longest-serving Governor of the same state, whereas Charlotte Lang, the Governor of East Mainland, had been Governor of two different states. The government's legal advice, however, concluded that Governor Lang had seniority. Had they advised otherwise, it is likely Governor Wood would now be President.
Shortly before the 2005 election, Wood announced she would not seek a fifth term. Her successor was Peter Crouch, formerly Chief Justice of Long Island, who took office on January 1, 2006.
On December 1, 2006, Wood declared her intention to stand as an Independent for the Georgeland Senate at the next general election. She was elected to the Senate at that poll, recieving more than 15% of the primary vote. Senator Wood took office in August 2007.
