When Bishop's work was initially published in Sierra, Bishop received public backlash and faced calls for censorship due to the blasphemous statement and his defense of Landonism, which was still considered highly controversial at the time. Bishop, an atheist, was targeted for his stance on religion, even by fellow Landonists, due to Landonism's longstanding tradition of ambivalence or even tolerance for religion, in contravention of other schools of Marxism.
