'''New Anjou''' is a state in the [[Eastern Superior|eastern region]] of [[Superior]]. Its borders are formed by the {{W|Mississippi River}} to the east and the {{W|Missouri River}} and {{W|Big Sioux River}} to the west. New Anjou is located in the East Central part of the country and borders [[Minnesota]] to the north; [[Iowa]] to the southwest; [[Sioux]] to the west; and [[New Hanover]] and [[Lansing]] to the east. Additionally, New Anjou is one of three states that shares a land border with the [[United Commonwealth]]. The state capital and largest city is [[Saint Denis, New Anjou|Saint Denis]], located in the center of New Anjou, and is also its largest metropolitan area. Outside of the Saint Denis metro area, {{W|Waterloo, Iowa|Waterloo}}, and {{W|Ames, Iowa|Ames}}, most of New Anjou consists of small farming towns and open fields. The topography of the state is mostly flat, but with several mountain ranges entering the state from the south along the Iowa border and from the northeast along the New Hanover border. 

Prior to European settlement, the area of New Anjou was populated by various [[First Nations (Superior)|First Nation tribes]]. As a territory of {{w|French Louisiana}}, New Anjou was the site of limited settlement by a combination of French traders and {{w|Huguenots}}, the latter of which settled parts of the region in order to escape persecution by the [[Catholic Church – Rome|Catholic]]-majority of continental [[France]]. The limited French settlement established a long-lasting French cultural identity which persists well into the contemporary era. The territory of New Anjou was incorporated in the [[Iowa Territory]], later the state of [[Iowa]] following acquisition of the Louisiana Territory by the United States. New Anjou joined the rest of Iowa in forming the [[Superior|Kingdom of Superior]].

In 1870, New Anjou was separated from the rest of Iowa through an act of [[Parliament of Superior|parliament]] and the following year was admitted as a fully-fledged state. With a population of less than 80,000, New Anjou was the smallest of the early Superian states. Composed of fertile farmland, agriculture played a large role in the early politics of the state, with landowners exerting large political influence in the state government. While some urban centers, such as the state capital of [[Saint Denis]] shifted towards industrialization during the late 19th century, the state overall remained largely rural and agriculture-focused. New Anjou became an important battleground during the [[Great War]]. Saint Denis was the first major Superian city to fall to [[United Commonwealth|Continental]] invasion and the city of {{w|Cedar Rapids, Iowa|Cedréville}} served as the capital of the [[Superian Continental Republic]]. The state remained under Continental control until the final stages of the war, being one of the last states to be [[Liberation of New Anjou|liberated]]. 

The state motto: ''{{w|Montjoie Saint Denis!}}'' is shared with [[France]]. The main industry in New Anjou is agriculture, making it the second most productive Superian agricultural state after Nebraska, and the third biggest agricultural producer among any state or province in North America after [[Kingdom of Sierra|Sierra]]'s [[Central Valley]] and Nebraska. There are also significant manufacturing facilities in Saint Denis, and the city is home to an emerging energy industry. The state legislature consists of the [[Senate of New Anjou|Senate]] and the [[National Assembly of New Anjou|National Assembly]], and politically, both within the state and in federal politics, New Anjou is considered a very conservative state. New Anjou is the home of the largest Catholic population in Superior. A majority of [[Catholic Church – Avignon|Avignon Catholic]] and [[Catholic Church – Rome|Roman Catholic]] Superians live in New Anjou, a product of the state's strong French cultural identity. Since 2020 it has seen a significant influx of new residents moving in from neighboring states, mostly from the north and northeast, and is seen as one of the fastest growing states of Superior. It has one of the lowest per capita GDP of any [[States of Superior|Superian state]].
