Evidence of humans inhabiting Ambazonia extends back to almost TBD years ago. Up until the 19th century, kingdoms composed of Grassfields ethnic groups dominated the region. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, both Germany and Britain competed to colonize the territory comprising modern-day Ambazonia, with Britain eventually succeeding in colonizing the region. British rule would continue until TBD, when Ambazonia, as part of British Cameroon, would declare independence. Only two years later, referendums would be held in both Northern Cameroons and Ambazonia to determine whether they should merge with Nigeria or Kamerun. Ambazonia would vote for unification with Kamerun. Over the next couple of decades, tensions grew between German-speaking Kamerunians and English-speaking Kamerunians. The English-speaking Kamerunians would eventually develop an Ambazonian identity and declare independence in 2007 after major protests were suppressed by the Kamerunian government, sparking the Ambazonian Independence War as Kamerun retaliated with force. After nine years of fighting, the recapture of the Ambazonian capital Buea would force an exhausted Kamerun to negotiate. Ambazonian independence would be secured, with revolutionary leader Sisuku Julius Ayuk Tabe becoming the first President of Ambazonia.
Ambazonia is a federal republic that provides the president with near-absolute power under the Ambazonian Constitution. The president has the power to appoint and dismiss the prime minister at any time, who functionally serves as the head of government due to their communication with both houses of the National Assembly of Ambazonia. Ambazonia is a developing country, and has been criticized for a poor human rights record as well as restrictions on free speech and a lack of free elections.

The President of Ambazonia serves as the de-jure Head of State of Ambazonia, as well as the de-facto Head of Government due to their power over the de-jure Head of Government, the Prime Minister. The president is given the power to make war and peace, command the armed forces, distribute passports, and appoint and dismiss the Prime Minister. The president can serve an unlimited number of eight-year terms, and after every term is complete the president can choose to step down or run for re-election. Critics of the Ambazonian government have pointed out the unrealistic results of Ambazonian presidential elections often leaning overwhelmingly in the ruling party's favor.
