History

Baltic Sea has been a fundamental part of the development of the Scandinavian nations for centuries. Since the birth of the Marines of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, the Baltic has always been one of its main points of attention. For centuries, the Danish and Swedish navies, along with the Russian, have dominated the Baltic.

With the birth of Skandinavia, the Baltic theater of operations became one of the two most important focuses of attention for the navy in the context of the Cold War. The threat of a Soviet invasion caused the Scandinavian navy to divide its effort between the Arctic and the Baltic.

After the end of the Cold War and with the eliminated Soviet threat, the Baltic fleet has been reduced as the navy adjusts to the new scenario paying more attention to the Atlantic and the Arctic and adapting to new roles of international projection. However, the Baltic fleet remains key in the national defense strategy.
