The Spanish National Union (Spanish: Unión Nacional Española), officially the Spanish National Union of Rightist Forces, or more commonly known as the National Union, is a right-wing and national conservative political party in Spain. Founded in 2013, the party is currently lead by Alejandro Carlo since 2017 and secretary-general Sebastián Santos. A self-described nationalist political party, the Spanish National Union is identified as right-wing to far-right on the political spectrum by journalists, academics, and political observers.
The Spanish National Union was established on December 18, 2013 by Josep Dávila, a former official in the Democratic Union. The party was founded as a result of the liberal conservative leadership and the moderate positions of the Democratic Union and was intended to be a party for Spanish social conservatives and nationalists who felt alienated by the Democratic Union. The establishment of the party caused an exodus of social conservatives and other rightists from the Democratic Union, though did not see any defections from prominent Democratic Union members. Despite receiving low polling numbers, the Spanish National Union secured a small representation in the Chamber of Deputies during the 2017 Spanish general election under the leadership of Alejandro Carlo, entering the unofficial opposition. In the 2021 general election, the National Union greatly expanded their seat count, becoming the third largest party in the chamber. In 2021, the National Union became the first signatory of the Lisbon Charter, a far-right anti-communist, anti-socialist, and anti-Landonist political document.
The National Union pushes forward a platform of social conservatism, ultranationalism, anti-Landonism, and centralization. The National Union has been identified by journalists, academics, and political observers as apart of the European Radical and New Right. The party is the only political party with representation that actively advocates for the restoration of the Bourbon monarchy, though is split between Legitimist and Carlist factions. On foreign policy, the National Union extensively promotes Transamericanist policies and opposes membership in the European Community. Since 2017, the National Union has remained apart of the unofficial opposition to the government, holding 48 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and TBD seats in the Federal Senate.
