Japan (Japanese: 日本 Nihon or Nippon), officially the Empire of Japan (大日本帝国 Dai Nippon Teikoku) , is a sovereign country spanning Eastern Pacific Ocean.

Japan is the ninth-most populous country in the world, with a population of just over 162 million, of which more than half live in the Japanese archipelago, which is also where the main seat of government and largest city, Tokyo, is located. The country is divided into 63 prefectures. The country also is home to the two most-populous metropolitan areas in the world; the Greater Tokyo Area, and the Greater Taihoku Area.
