Ted Henner appointed Senator for life

Lennoxton Gazette.svg LENNOXTON, TK, 2021-12-08. After consulting with Governor Frankiskus Navean and the Takalese delegation in Congress, President Jim Babich announced that Ted Henner, former midfielder for Folkestone City and Olympia Takalim, will fill the life seat vacated by now-Minister Teri Hansen.

An analysis of the 2022 gubernatorial races

The Golden Sun.svg 2021-11-19, by Marina Skultety. All eyes are on the House elections – and rightfully so, because they will shape Kalșeri for years to come, as well as the gubernatorial races in four key cantons: Evalria, Lág, New Lothian and Takalim. Three are held by the Social Cooperation Party, still shaken by the resignation of President Maksimilianus Ureska and the discourse surrounding it.

All elections will take place on 20 March, same day as House elections; if necessary, Evalria, Lág and Takalim will hold a run-off election on 3 April. New Lothian does not employ any run-off system.

  • Evalria: 5 years, no term limits.
    • Incumbent Mayor Ioana Fischer (S) has been praised for her progressive stance towards the LGBT+ community, her pursuit to make Evalrian public schooling one of the best in the world, and her endeavor to make Evalria a carbon-neutral city. However, these are also the main sources of criticism from the right and the Libertarians, who have pointed out that these progressive policies make Evalria an even costlier city than it already is. Another critical issue is her tough handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has prompted pushback from anti-lockdown activists and the Natural Respect Party.
    • Following the resounding loss suffered by Peter Yarmolenko to Ben Oyala, the Liberal Democrats have chosen Spencer Addle, who served as Secretary of Transport under then-Mayor Sebastianus Linș. While openly liberal in regards to social issues and in favor of expanding public transport, Addle has declared that if elected, he will lower several taxes, such as the ones for income, inheritance and sales, and relax some restrictions mandated by the pandemic. He will be running with a joint LibDem-Libertarian-Restart ticket.
    • Not satisfied with his performance in the Senate election, entrepreneur Warren Hudson (Ind.) is ready to take another swing. His platform includes ending all COVID restrictions, setting up a referendum on whether the counties surrounding Evalria (the "Belt") are interested in joining the city-canton, and ending all traffic restrictions. Hudson will be backed by the National Democrats.
    • The Republicans and the Movement for Action will make a joint appearance in the ballot paper: their candidate, Ted Wenedig (M), has announced that if elected, he will scrap all "non-essential" environmental programs, stop the "Islamization" of Evalria and "undo much of the gay agenda in schools and media". If his platform is any indication, Wenedig has been embroiled in controversy due to his scathing remarks and his past membership of a White nationalist group, to which he claims he has now cut all ties.
    • The unregistered Natural Respect Party, which opposes mandatory vaccinations, 5G, lockdowns, the sale and consumption of meat and the Quack Amendment, has fielded Janet Schenck, a noted vegan activist.
    • The picture: Addle's campaign is shaping up to be a fight against taxes and COVID-19 restrictions, but these two factors seem to be the only ones separating two otherwise extremely similar campaigns from the SCP and the LDP. Depending on how strong Hudson's campaign is, Fischer may need a second round to win a second term. Wenedig and Schenck's crystal-clear but somewhat offputting programs will do more harm than good in the long run.
  • Lág: 4 years, no term limits.
    • Incumbent Michael O'Brien (S) believes that Lág has done well in regards to renewable energy, but claims that the struggle for climate change is not over, and neither is the fight against the pandemic.
    • The Liberal Democrats and National Democrats Bill Gorczycki (Ind.), nephew of Edward Gorczycki, owner of Branbury FC from 1963 to his death in 2006. Gorczycki's platform includes "evaluating projects relating to infrastructure and public transport, to determine whether they are worth carrying out", lowering taxes for the fishing and seaside vacation industries and abolishing the requirement for a new license plate for people moving within Lág.
    • Casino executive Sharon Corduroy (L) calls for the establishment of a 5% flat tax for all expenses and the privatization of non-essential public utilities, as a means to reduce the debt amassed by Lág, which Corduroy claims is among the highest in the country.
    • Noted anti-immigration activist Saul Gist (Ind.) is ready for his third campaign for Governor of Lág under the "Lág Belongs to Lágans" banner. His program includes restrictions on immigration and rent for non-Kalșerians. Gist has also taken the time to criticize Governor O'Brien for his "draconian" measures to contain the pandemic.
    • As is usual for the Lágan Restorationist Party, Dan Lisca has announced a program to restore the monarchy, at least in Lág. This is the only noteworthy point in his program; everything else seems to be a mish-mash of Liberal Democratic and Social Cooperationist promises.
    • The picture: O'Brien might win, but this will not be decided from the start at all. Gorczycki and Corduroy may want to establish a second-round partnership in order to avoid harming each other. Lisca's catch-all program might not be enough to distract potential voters from his restorationist ambitions. Current polling shows that Gist may win at least 15% of the rural votes.
  • New Lothian: 4 years, no term limits.
    • Incumbent Henry McIntyre (D) will count on the support of the National Democrats. His plans include improving the rural roads, lowering the gun tax and offering benefits for businesses and college students moving to New Lothian.
    • McIntyre's popularity has forced Simon Walds (S) to focus almost exclusively on social issues: he promises to create a minimum wage of ħ40/hour and establish hotlines for victims of hate crimes and rape. His program also mentions "making New Lothian a world-class hub for businesses" by improving public transport and bikeways.
    • Derek Daly (L) is pushing for the end of all restrictions mandated by the pandemic, as well as the abolition of the gun and income taxes.
    • The picture: Although the lack of Quincollia may hurt McIntyre's poll performance, Welds's program will most likely pose no threat to the Governor.
  • Takalim: 4 years, renewable once.
    • The program published by incumbent Governor Frankiskus Navean (S) offers the usual: improvement of public transport, sensible taxing program backed by statistics, improvement of living condition for LGBT+ people.
    • With Mayor-turned-Senator Mike Arnaud (D) out of the way, the Liberal Democrats are hoping to repeat their Senate victory by fielding former Representative Greg Stephanidis, a moderate politician popular with the younger electoral groups. The Libertarians and the National Democrats have announced their support for Stephanidis, who aims to make Takalim "a global tech industry powerhouse" by launching a new portal that would allow many operations, such as passport renewal and tax filing, to be done at home, as well as free sex reassignment surgery for transgender individuals.
    • Reintroducing religion in schools, establishing a subsidy program for farmers and fishers and cutting all ties with China are some of the points of the program issued by John Hadley (R).
    • The picture: It'll be a tough battle between Navean and Stephanidis. While not exactly poised to become the next Governor, Hadley will surely collect some valuable votes in the countryside.

Evalria bans job ads related to cryptocurrencies

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-11-11. Mayor Ioana Fischer has signed the Cryptocurrency Regulation Act, which bans companies that deal in blockchain technology, NFTs (non-fungible tokens) and cryptocurrencies from advertising in Evalria.

The Act, which will become effective on December 1, 2021, was submitted by Ald. Bob Tyrrell (D), spurred by concerns over environmental decay, money laundering, protection of consumers and mental health – his own son is alleged to have lost ħ40,000 in a scam involving a cryptocurrency. The Act was subsequently approved 9-3.

Restart reaches 750 members

Lennoxton Gazette.svg LENNOXTON, TK, 2021-11-05. Edwin Cho has announced that Restart, the new pragmatist party founded by him and his colleague Tony DeLuca, has reached the 750 members required to compete in the national election.

The electoral law states that parties are either given an available letter of their choice, or the first available letter. Since the party website does not mention anything about the electoral letter, it is assumed that Restart will be given the letter G, last taken by the Green Party until its dissolution in 2012.

NatDem delegation pledges to support the KRCA

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-11-03. In his first words as Senator, Roger McCaul (N-QN) pledged support for the Kalhan Representation in Congress Act (KRCA), which would add 79 seats in Congress reserved for Kalhan-speaking politicians. "No longer will Kalhan-speakers be discriminated in their own home with this proposal", concluded McCaul.

His National Democratic delegation and their Liberal Democratic colleagues have agreed that no threshold should be set, and that the Sainte-Laguë method is to be preferred, as it ensures a representation closer to the "will of the people".

During the discussion, McCaul stressed the importance of introducing recall elections for all nationwide offices.

Gov. Navean announces advisory referendum on Senator for Life

Lennoxton Gazette.svg LENNOXTON, TK, 2021-11-02. Governor Frankiskus Navean has stated that an advisory referendum for the new Senator for Life will be scheduled on the same day as the House election, following the appointment of Teri Hansen to the newly-formed Ministry of Youth.

Takalese residents will get to recommend a prospective Senator to the Governor, who will then discuss the most popular options with the Cantonal Assembly. The question will most likely consist of a single empty space in which voters will write down their favorite choice.

Right now, the most popular candidates are actor Andrew Ely, writer Michaela Denison, former Governor Loretta Barslow, former Senator Edwin Cho and rapper LikoRiche.

New Senators sworn in

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-11-01. As outlined in the Charter, the newly-elected Senators have been sworn in before the President and the President pro tempore of the Senate. The list of those who took the oath is as follows:

  • Clinton Naismith (C-CS, re-elected)
  • Anne-Marie Gosselin (D-CI, re-elected)
  • Lauren Krzysztofowicz (S-CH, re-elected)
  • Vince Mundell (I-CH, appointed)
  • Ben Oyala (S-EV, re-elected)
  • Ruth Wheeler (D-JV)
  • Kenny Nakamura (D-KL)
  • Steve Hakobyan (N-LG)
  • George Calhoun (D-NK)
  • Zeke Snodgrass (D-LN)
  • Todd Gassman (N-QN)
  • Roger McCaul (N-QN)
  • Travis Jones (I-QN, Senator for Life)
  • Marilena Novak (S-SR)
  • Mike Arnaud (D-TK)
  • Charlie Gilchrist (S-TG)
  • Michelle Kanzler (D-UR)

While the Charter states that the oath is mandatory only for those elected for the first time, all of the returning Senators took the oath as well. All of them, except for Gosselin, took the oath in Kalhan, and then in English.

DeLuca-Cho party will be named "Restart"

Lennoxton Gazette.svg LENNOXTON, TK, 2021-10-30. In a Facebook post, former Senator Edwin Cho of Takalim has revealed the name of the new political project launched by him and his associate Tony DeLuca:

After a week of deliberation, we are ready to reveal our logo and name:
Restart.
Why Restart? Because our mission is to restart Kalșerian politics and rid it of the partisanship and cults of personality that ruined it, and to put accountability and rationality back in politics.
Once we reach the required 2500 members, we will submit all documentation to have the party registered for national elections.
Our agenda will be defined at a convention in late 2021/early 2022, so watch out for that 👀
Once again, we thank you for submitting your ideas and helping define this project!

Edwin Cho (@EdwinChoTK)

Restart Kalseri logo.svg

The logo depicts the name of the party; the single-storey "a" has a clockwise arrow in it. Cho said that the logo, designed by himself, is meant to be a temporary solution, and that he is willing to set up a redesign contest "if party members wish to change the logo".

Ed and Tony's insubstantial new party?

The Golden Sun.svg 2021-10-29, by Rob Masi. So, what did these two do? Tony DeLuca and Edwin Cho left the Social Cooperation Party after its... less than stellar performance in the elections of two weeks ago, let's put it at that.

Why did they leave? They left because they felt that the Reds adopted a platform too far to the left and fielded the "wrong" candidates for competitive races like Lág and Kalúen, and also because they refused to stay any longer in an environment they deemed "cultish".

What would the party be based on? Short answer: nobody knows. Judging by what the two said in public, it wouldn't be imprudent to say that the party may embrace some aspects of liberalism, socially and economically, though the main selling point will most likely be its pragmatism, a trait much appreciated but not often advertised in this country's political fauna.

What will be its name? No one knows yet, not even those who call the shots. They have recently closed submissions on Edwin Cho's official website; "People's Party", "Democratic Union", "Alliance for a New Country" and variations thereof seem to be popular suggestions.

Whom could they hope to attract? Again, since we are still dealing with an idea of a party rather than an actual party, no one can tell for sure, but a group of disenfranchised Social Cooperationists, former Libertarians and independent centrists expressed interest in joining this new political formation. Cho stated that the new party "[would] be open to anyone who seeks to reintroduce common sense in politics, through sound and rational policies".

Why didn't they just join the Liberal Democratic Party? The answer to this can be pinpointed to the reputation of the Liberal Democrats. While the DLC party will probably be bound to agree with the Blues over several issues, the LDP has had a nasty habit of failing spectacularly at an important task every once in a while.

Do we really need this? Perhaps we do, perhaps we don't. While it is true that there are plenty of parties, registered or not, a truly pragmatic party has not really caught on. This is not a case of votes gone to waste, though: having a solid, well-defined party back someone else can be of help.

Mayor Garner appoints Vince Mundell to empty Senate seat

Chalmersville Post.svg 2021-10-26. As his first official act as Mayor of Chalmersville, Rick Garner has appointed Vince Mundell, a political scientist of the University of Chalmersville, to fill the Senate seat vacated by Jim Babich.

Known for his deep analyses of the Garner presidency and the political climate in the city-canton, Mundell, 56, will be sworn in on November 1, and will serve at least until November 1, 2023.

An analysis of the recent elections

The Golden Sun.svg 2021-10-25, by Marina Skultety.

By party:

  • Liberal Democrats: At one time expected to go the way of their British counterparts, the Liberal Democratic Party has instead managed to comfortably subvert what could have been a difficult set of races.
  • National Democrats: Helped by the pushback against COVID-mandated restrictions, the NatDem début did not disappoint, capturing the hearts of many a rural voter.
  • Conservatives: Their solid performance in Cape Sundervale has stood the test of these trying times.
  • Social Cooperation: This cycle of elections has been a disaster for the Reds, mitigated only by their victory in San Rafael.
  • Republicans: Hornata and Chandler – Regis, that is – tried to revive a conservative ideology that was publicly forsaken seventeen years ago. Perhaps they could take a hint from their partners in misery: "United we stand, divided we fall".
  • Libertarians: They may as well not have fielded anyone of their own, but their endorsements helped Liberal Democrats achieve the relative majority in the Senate.
  • Kalșerians for Change: Running for Senate seats is out of the question for K4C, as they don't believe the upper chamber should even exist. Collins and Keijzer seem to reflect the party's willingness to go back to its anti-establishment roots.

By canton:

  • Cape Sundervale: Clinton Naismith earned a second term to Mecklenburg Palace, unhampered by Steve Jarrett's ties to the common people.
  • Cartier Island: Anne-Marie Gosselin managed to fend off Lucien Hébert's challenge, though not without fighting to the last ballot paper. Lavigne's "man of the people" gambit did not work, perhaps because no one knows who he is. Marino ran a Haas-like campaign that solely consisted of "I'm not like the others".
  • Chalmersville: Liz Garner failed to unseat Lauren Krzystofowicz, though she can find solace in the fact that her relative Rick has been elected Mayor. Sheldon Cadbury's fault was being too close to the industrial establishment of the Social Cooperation Party. Despite local media attention, Conwell and Ferguson failed to crack the 5% barrier in their respective elections, further proving that Chalmersville is a solidly centrist canton.
  • Evalria: The question "Why didn't the LibDems and the NatDems join forces here?" seems to overshadow Ben Oyala's expected victory. National Democratic distaste for a rich entrepreneur solidly embedded into the Liberal Democratic establishment? Most likely, but Warren Hudson also contributed to the liberal conservative fragmentation. Dobrynin has been unceremoniously sent back to his doghouse.
  • Janval: Ruth Wheeler may have won, but she performed worse than her predecessor Richard Heinemann: two percentage points and a half down compared to four years ago. Even in third place, Iákomus Unsi is rightfully happy about his performance in Hutchinson, Jarronburg and Gulfport.
  • Kalúen: Grant Hornwood was the obvious choice for the Social Cooperation Party here, and yet he was the wrong candidate, as his Ureskist platform turned off the more federalist Reds, who fled to Kenny Nakamura in the second round. The immediate reactivation of political rights for former inmates is bound to generate much discussion, especially in cases with a violent history.
  • Lág: There is no excuse for the Reds here: they tripped this one. Valaitis was simply too far to the left to please the rural electorate, which is where Hakobyan's appeal as a sometimes-liberal-sometimes-conservative pragmatic man of the people performed best. William Kermode's 5% share of the pie shows us once again that the Republicans have fielded their own candidates in the wrong races.
  • New Kerry: As widely expected, Calhoun defeated Harrison. While not exactly a contender for the seat, William O'Swiney's eccentricity helped him some, especially in rural areas. The anonymous Hugh O'Daly barely touches the 1% barrier. Seriously, did the Republicans not want to win?
  • New Lothian: A Blue has won here, except in Hartleyville, where the Red performed better. What else is new?
  • Quincollia: Initially unpredictable, the National Democrats captivated the imaginations of more than a quarter of Quincollians, while Emma Hóltansi's bet cost her the seat. Turnout rate was among the highest, but it may be a temporary phenomenon. Contrary to expectations, Henry Chandler II and J-Mac were both outdone by four-term mayor of Vemín John Rundgren (D).
  • San Rafael: Some view this as a Social Cooperation victory, others view this as Sánchez shooting himself in the foot by switching allegiance to a party doomed to fail before it even started. Jim Lowood (D-L) performed better than expected, helped by the second-round votes given from supporters of Al Dodson (N).
  • Takalim: Mike Arnaud charmed enough Takalese voters to avoid a second round and win with an impressive 8.7% lead over Hon. Kristensen. Now, in what universe does an 8.7% trail behind the Liberal Democrats – in what should have been a competitive race – count as a "tough fight", using Kristensen's own words? The Reds giving up before the match started would be a better analogy.
  • Tigupoke: Charlie Gilchrist (S) comes back to the Senate after a six-year gap, defeating NDP Secretary Jon McKendrick. This might be the only election in which voting Liberal Democratic is tantamount to a protest vote: Betty Long is a caring mother and grandmother, but what was her platform about? Yet another disappointment for Liza Tillson.
  • Urgel: After God knows how many years of Red domination, Michelle Kanzler and Eddie Forrester paint Urgel blue. The anti-incumbent, anti-"more of the same" sentiment, however, did not help Republicans at all in the Senate. Babineaux received 11% of the first-round votes in the gubernatorial race, though, so there's that.

The Telegraph's Political Thermometer: support for DeLuca-Cho party minimal

Kalserian Telegraph.svg 2021-10-23. "Kalșeri needs a sensible party that embraces federalism and progress within sensible limits." Tony DeLuca's words are crystal-clear: he and his colleague Edwin Cho are planning to form a new party for Social Cooperationists and other left-of-center electors that are unhappy with Ureskism. What the new party will look like is yet unknown, but the Telegraph has set up a survey to detect potential first-choice voters of this new party:

If Tony DeLuca and Edwin Cho were to form their own party, would it become your first choice in elections?
Party affiliation Yes No Unsure
Social Cooperationists 15% 69% 16%
Liberal Democrats 11% 84% 5%
Libertarians 29% 57% 14%
Kalșerians for Change 9% 60% 31%
Others 4% 77% 19%
Independents 31% 29% 40%
Average 16.5% 62.7% 20.8%

2,184 people responded to the Telegraph's survey.

Interestingly, were DeLuca and Cho to go ahead and form their own party, the biggest loser would not be the Social Cooperation Party, but rather the Libertarian Party: this could be due to its voters feeling that the party is losing its core identity and becoming "yet another insipid low-taxation party", as Hon. George Freytag put it.

DeLuca and Cho quit the SCP

Kalserian Telegraph.svg 2021-10-19. Two days after the Senate elections, in which the Social Cooperation Party won just four races, former Senators Tony DeLuca and Edwin Cho have announced that they have left the party.

The disastrous result by the Social Cooperation Party can be pinned to one fault: the party wants to uphold the principles of the failing ideology created by Schindler and further propagated by Ureska. DeLuca and I, along with many unhappy party members, have long denounced the flaws in the ideology, but the party continually refused to listen. As Tears for Fears put it, "you were paid not to listen / now your house is on fire."

Edwin Cho (@EdwinChoTK)

While somewhat surprising, the results that came in on Sunday are but a natural consequence of the party's insistence on wanting to pursue Ureska's brand of forced progress. Further proof that Kalșeri needs a sensible party that embraces federalism and progress within sensible limits.

Tony DeLuca (@SenDeLucaLG)

The need for a new party has been questioned by Party President Aleksandrus Șáșnegi:

DeLuca's words could very well degenerate into the death of the Social Cooperation Party as we know it. There is a reason our motto is "United we stand, divided we fall". This is not the time for futile desertions.

Aleksandrus Șáșnegi (@AlexXaxnegi)

Tigupoke abolishes death penalty

The Cowhill Farmer.svg COWHILL, TG, 2021-10-17. By a margin of just shy of four thousand votes, Tigupokians have decided that capital punishment should be removed from the cantonal constitution, thereby making the moratorium on executions permanent.

YES: 313,569 (50.3%)
NO: 309,829 (40.7%)

Under the provisions of the referendum, Gov. Bobby Blanchard Jr. is expected to commute all pending death sentences to life imprisonment. The last execution had been carried out in 2014, when Ray John Villar Jr. was given a lethal injection.

BREAKING: Jim Babich sworn in

Times of Kalseri.svg EVALRIA, 2021-10-11. President-elect Jim Babich was sworn in at noon by Chief Justice Tom Haufersagt, before a relatively small crowd at the back of Mecklenburg Palace. He is now officially the President of Kalșeri.

Babich said that his presidency will "tirelessly work to keep the country together in times of uncertainty", and that the list of the members of his administration will be published as soon as talks with National Democrats, Conservatives and the Parti National Cartierois are over. He has hinted at the formation of new cabinet positions to "address issues that are ever more challenging today".

BREAKING: Jim Babich elected President by Congress

Times of Kalseri.svg EVALRIA, 2021-10-09. James Robert Babich, the Liberal Democratic Senator for Chalmersville since 1999, has been elected President of the Kalșerian Republic, with 134 votes, defeating Hon. Cindy Vargas (S-Uslar, EV) in a thrilling six-round match. He will be sworn in on Monday.

Of Serbian origin, the 57-year-old Yarkie is certainly no stranger to what comes down in Evalria, but he originally had other plans: prior to being elected to the Senate, Babich was a veterinary surgeon, and only joined the Liberal Democratic Party in 1996. He has since risen to national prominence, becoming the heir to Phil Garner's federalist views.

Babich's roster has not yet been disclosed, although he has confirmed that "some will be returning".

Babich is married to Jessica Fulton and has two children. He is a supporter of Zeitgeist Chalmersville.

BREAKING: Special Congress session for temporary President begins

Times of Kalseri.svg EVALRIA, 2021-10-09. All 239 Members of Congress have reached the West Wing of Mecklenburg Palace, where the House of Representatives meets, for this special vote. It has been 34 years since this type of election took place.

For the first three rounds, a 2/3 majority is required to be appointed President; the threshold is lowered to 50%+1 from the fourth round onwards. If no majority has been reached for five rounds, only the top-two candidates will advance to the sixth round. Should no majority be reached by that point, a seventh round will take place, where abstention is disallowed.

Quincollia man arrested for destroying speed cameras

Vemin Chronicle.svg MICKMACK CO., QN, 2021-10-08. A 56-year-old man from Mickmack County has been arrested for allegedly sabotaging 39 speed cameras across eastern Quincollia by unrooting them, spraying them with paint and damaging the wires.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, stated that speed cameras "are nothing but an excuse for counties to get yet another hem out of us honest workers", and that "these cowing things need to be abolished". He then mentioned that he is an outspoken member of Kalșerians Against Speed Cameras and Speed Bumps (KASCSB), headquartered in Hull, QN.

Valaitis, Newell comment Ureska's resignation

The Kalserian Independent.svg LENNOXTON, TK, 2021-10-05. When asked to comment Ureska's resignation, Hon. Jake Valaitis, SCP candidate for the Takalese seat in the Senate, was visibly upset.

"The Hornata-Chandler axis has succeeded in bringing down an administration by spinning what should have been a forgettable occurrence into this whole 'Ureska is corrupt' hoopla. I hope they're happy, because their little stunt will send Kalșeri into some deep ****. This imprudent move is going to cost us credibility before the Kalșerian people and the rest of the world."

Cassandra Newell expressed similar thoughts, but with a different target: "The man himself is no saint, but DeLuca and Cho just had to pull this self-serving stunt in the middle of a pandemic, didn't they?" She then added that had the two Senators in question decided to run for any political charge in the coming years, they would be "toast".

Former President and Minister Robert Havlichek declined to comment the matter.

The end of Ureska, but not of Ureskism

Kalserian Telegraph.svg EVALRIA, 2021-10-05. "Thank you, and farewell": these are the words with which Maksimilianus Ureska leaves Gann House for good, bringing seven years of presidency to a close.

Among the milestones of the Ureska administration are the Twenty-fifth Amendment, which expanded LGBT+ rights across the country by allowing them to get married and serve in the military; the Twenty-sixth Amendment, which set a two-term limit for Members of Congress; the expansion of the National Bicycle Highway system; and the expansion of public transport in rural areas and cities alike. Ureska has established himself as a "man of the people" and an "outsider to Evalrian shenanigans".

But Ureska is also deeply controversial and routinely described as a "pillock", and not every part of his plan for Kalșeri has come to fruition. The much-debated Church Tax Act 2016, for instance, had to be significantly relaxed for it to pass, and the sugar tax never saw the light of day, despite Ureska's multiple nods at a possible introduction, mostly due to Liberal Democratic and Libertarian opposition to a new tax. More recently, his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, while praised by medical experts, was lambasted as "draconian" by some activists who opposed restrictions related to the pandemic, primarily belonging to the right wing; his plans for mandatory vaccinations were not backed by the Libertarians, soon joined by the Republicans. Another recurring theme was hiking import tariffs to encourage consumption of Kalșerian goods. The Uslar Papers turned out to be the final nail in the coffin of the Ureska administration.

What can the general public read between these lines? Ureska was definitely different, and while not necessarily a role model, his ideas have resonated with many Kalșerians, and are unlikely to fade away any time soon.

BREAKING: Maksimilianus Ureska resigns as President of Kalșeri

Times of Kalseri.svg EVALRIA, 2021-10-05. As scheduled, President Maksimilianus Ureska held a televised speech on KalCom 1 at noon:

Good morning.
Even though this conference was publicly announced by this very channel, seeing me talk directly to you, the commendable people of Kalșeri, outside the Christmas-New Year's Day period, may be unusual to most of you. That's because it is. And this is also the last time I will do so.
When I was elected in 2014, the people of Kalșeri gave me a simple and crystal-clear mission: bring Kalșeri into the future, and improve everything that needs improving, no matter how hard it seemed. It sounded hard for me, an outsider to the Evalrian political life, but I immediately got to work.
For the first term, most of my program was successfully carried out, and my Ministers and I have collaborated with the forces in the opposition to work out our differences concerning controversial matters.
Throughout this second term, however, it has been more difficult to carry out the job I was once again given. Some may attribute this to the so-called "second-term fatigue", and others will elaborate further, reminding us all of the rather unpleasant episodes my administration have gone through.
It is true and indisputable that when there are no disagreements, there cannot be a functioning democratic system. All I could do was try to extend an olive branch where I could, and grin and bear it when peaceful dialogue was not an option. I also accepted that personal attacks are also part of a democratic system, and I tried my best not to give too much weight to those.
However, the amount of personal attacks and backstabbings has consistently multiplied to an unbearable degree, and this is due to the so-called "Uslar Papers". While I admit that I have not always acted as expected of a good President, I firmly reject this ignominious accusation. I am not a corrupt politician. I have never given out anything, not even a penny, without fully obeying the law and consulting with experts on the matter in times of doubt. Had I been prone to corruption, I would not be here, talking to all of you.
Even if we ignore this one scandal, one simple fact of political life has become painfully clear: I no longer enjoy the support that I used to have. Although I believe that this opposition to me is mostly manufactured by some lone wolves who nurture a deep-seated resentment towards me, it has severely impacted the national administration and established a climate of hatred, uncertainty and cynicism, three feelings that must be avoided as much as possible when leading the country.
Normally, I would just ignore these conditions and go on, business as usual, but I have found that such a course of action is no longer possible.
I really did not want this day to come, but fate has forced my hand and I am left with only the nuclear option: I, Maksimilianus Ureska, hereby resign the solemn office of President of the Kalșerian Republic, effective immediately. To carry out my duties any longer while fighting this hostile climate would be a fruitless endeavor, and it would require too much of what little energy I and the rest of Kalșeri have left.
I would like to thank everyone for the constant cooperation, thanks to which much of my platform has been translated to facts.
Now it is up to Congress to decide who will serve for the remainder of my term. Whatever the outcome, I am confident that Congress will appoint someone competent and accomplished, someone who has the experience required to lead this country into the uncertain future.
Thank you, and farewell.

Maksimilianus Ureska

Normally, upon resignation of a President, the Vice President is appointed to fill the vacated office. This, however, will not take place, as Jackson Leary resigned as well. In that case, the Charter states that Congress will hold a joint session to determine who will serve as President for the remainder of the term. There are two possible candidates: Lisa Smithson, the President of the Senate (D-KL), and Jim Babich (D-CH), the President pro tempore of the higher chamber of Congress. Should neither be available for the caretaker presidency, the High Summoner (currently H.Ill. Diego Morelos, L-EV) will be appointed to the Presidency.

An important detail to remember is that Ureska's resignation does not stop any possible incapacitation inquiries and convictions.

President Ureska to hold televised speech on Tuesday at noon

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-10-02. The official account of KalCom 1 has published a statement, according to which the President is expected to hold a televised speech concerning "an urgent national matter" on Tuesday at noon, according to what the Presidential Office told the network.

It is yet unknown what the speech is about, although political scientists have theorized that the speech will be about a replacement for the recently-departed Vice President.

Vice President Jackson Leary resigns

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-30. Vice President W. Jackson Leary has posted an image on Twitter, where he announces that he has resigned from the post of Vice President two weeks before the traditional expiration of the term.

I would like to start by saying that I shall be forever thankful to President Maksimilianus Ureska for appointing me to the valuable office of Vice President.
With that said, ever since news of the transaction papers found in Uslar broke out, the political climate has become unbearable, and the Presidency has become increasingly hard to defend.
My parents have always said that any endeavor undertaken must be completed, and I fully subscribe to this message. They did not raise a quitter, for that is not who I am. In any other circumstance, what I am about to do would have been unthinkable and would have disgusted me to the very core.
However, I have found it more and more difficult to give advice to an uncooperative President and, owing to my lack of expertise in most matters previously covered by Ministers who have now resigned, the very job I was appointed to fulfill has become impossible.
Therefore, I have no choice but to resign as Vice President of the Kalșerian Republic, effective tomorrow at noon.
It really smarts to not be able to carry out this office for the remaining three years, but I am confident that this job will go to someone competent.

W. Jackson Leary (@JaxLearyLG)

Ministers Mueller and Izaguirre resign

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-26. Ministers Thomas T. Mueller (Energy) and John A. Izaguirre (Education) have resigned from their respective offices.

In interviews with national television, both have expressed their unwillingness to have their names further associated with an increasingly untenable administration. Also contributing to Mueller's decision was the fact that he found himself disagreeing with the President more often than throughout the first term.

Draft of QN cantonal constitution is ready, says Gov. Kowalczyk

Vemin Chronicle.svg VEMÍN, QN, 2021-09-24. "The Constituent Assembly has agreed upon a preliminary draft for the Cantonal Constitution of Quincollia", said Gov. Tom Kowalczyk (D-Eustace). "After holding extensive talks about all sorts of issues throughout the year, I can say that the only thing left to do is to solve the remaining kinks, and then a referendum will take place." Kowalczyk added that the draft serves as a "bridge" between Quincollian values and national rights.

The referendum in question will probably feature two questions: one concerning the Cantonal Constitution, and the other one concerning the symbols of the canton, including the flag.

LibDem caucus and NatDems agree on Senate coalition

Kalserian Telegraph.svg PERCY, KL, 2021-09-18. Senators Jim Babich (D-CH) and Edward Carroll (C-CS) met National Democratic Party President Steve Jurgensen (JV) in the morning to discuss the terms for the agreement to cooperate in the Senate.

Together with Sen. Edward Carroll (Conservative), I have entertained a talk with Steve Jurgensen, the President of the National Democratic Party, to build a relationship between the three parties in the Senate.
All three of us agree that the end result is very satisfactory, and in line with almost every point of our respective programs.
The only relevant issue that generated disagreements between our caucus and the National Democrats is the simplification of gun ownership laws. Our objectives on this will be set throughout later meetings.
We hope to put this agreement to good use.

Carnafarry incapacitation paper submitted in House

Times of Kalseri.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-15. The 57-page proposal to incapacitate President Maksimilianus Ureska has been submitted by Hon. Clive O'Hanrahan (D-Meath, NK). The paper seeks to incapacitate the President on three counts:

  1. 4 ("disregarding human rights and the basic principles of democracy", owing to the restrictions enacted due to COVID-19);
  2. 6 ("being investigated for or convicted of corruption", owing to the Uslar papers);
  3. 9 ("being declared insane or otherwise unfit to act", owing to the President's misbehavior while in office).

The proposal will undergo approval by the Congress Committee for Performance Review, the main body for reviewing incapacitation requests. If deemed of acceptable quality, the proposal will then be discussed in the House of Representatives, where a formal inquiry and a psychological analysis of the official on trial are launched.

If a two-thirds majority of the House approves of the proposal (134 "Yes" votes out of 200 are required, but not all articles have to be approved), it will be forwarded to the Senate, which will establish a Tribunal of Review of Conduct; there, the prosecution and defense of the impeached official (in this case the President) will get to present their arguments and evidence. The trial will be presided by the Chief Justice (currently Thomas Haufersagt).

After the closing arguments, the Senate will vote on whether to relieve the President of his duties (28 "Yes" votes out of 42 are needed; Senators for life get to vote). If the President is incapacitated, he will have to resign within 15 days. A second vote is held in the Senate on whether the offending official should lose his eligibility to public offices for 5 years (another 2/3 majority is required).

President Ureska apologizes for calling Vargas a "w***e"

Kalserian Telegraph.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-14. In a press conference, President Maksimilianus Ureska formally apologized for calling Hon. Cindy Vargas (S-Uslar, EV) a "backstabbing w***e", claiming that it was an "impulsive and illogical deicision, driven by [his] anger issues".

Ministers Malinauskas and Havlichek resign, call for Ureska to follow suit

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-14. Internal Affairs Minister John T. Malinauskas and Telecom Minister HE Robert Havlichek have resigned from their respective Cabinet positions, in solidarity with their former colleague Rosalinda Gutiérrez.

Never, in my 40-year career as a politician, have I ever witnessed such immaturity from 27 [Gann St, where the Presidential Palace is], and he still has the gall to pester me on why I chose not to nominate him Minister of Labor. Max, resign now while you still can.

HE Robert Havlichek

I've given Ureska multiple second chances, but he's just screwing himself over on purpose at this point. I don't want to be involved in this scandal-ridden administration any longer. Perhaps the National Democrats have a point when they talk about recall elections. He ought to resign now, lest he lose his eligibility for the next five years.

John T. Malinauskas

More ministers have mused on resigning from the Ureska Cabinet.

Attorney General Gutiérrez resigns

Kalserian Telegraph.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-13. Rosalinda Gutiérrez has resigned from the office of Attorney General, citing Ureska's errant behavior as the main reason.

After reading the tweets, I can't help but be dismayed by Ureska's utter unprofessionalism, especially considering that he's the President. He is utterly unqualified to carry out his duties any longer. His usage of such coarse language to refer to an accomplished politician like Hon. Vargas is simply unacceptable.

Rosalinda Gutiérrez

Ureska and Vargas engage in Twitter fight

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-13. President Maksimilianus Ureska and Hon. Cindy Vargas (S-Uslar, EV) have engaged in a Twitter exchange.

It is with extreme sadness that I learn that Hon. Cindy Vargas, a dear friend of mine, has stabbed me in the back by joining the Carnafarry bunch to overthrow me. I'm saving the country from a deadly pandemic, and THIS is how you thank me? Such a shame!

@MaxUreska

If saving the country from descending into madness requires extreme measures, even at the expense of a former ally, so be it. I have my priorities straight.

@HonCindyVargas

Descending into madness? If anything, you're the mad one here.

@MaxUreska

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! I thought I could trust you as President, but you have embarrassed and disappointed us multiple times by now. At least save some face and own up to your mistakes.

@HonCindyVargas

And you should own up to the fact that you're a backstabbing WHORE.

@MaxUreska

You're only digging your own grave. I wish no further engagement with you under any capacity, Mr. President. Adieu.

@HonCindyVargas

So be it!

@MaxUreska

The exchange ended with Cindy Vargas sending a screenshot showing that the President has blocked her on Twitter, with the caption "There's prickly, and then there's this. What a dunce. @SenDeLucaLG @EdwinChoTK".

Carnafarry conference sets out basic framework

Times of Kalseri.svg CARNAFARRY, NK, 2021-09-12. After a six-hour conference, the five representatives from the participating parties (Social Cooperationists, Liberal Democrats, Libertarians, Republicans and the PNC) have drafted a bill to initiate the process of incapacitation against President Maksimilianus Ureska, which will be submitted "as soon as practical, possibly within this week", as O'Hanrahan said.

The reasons summoned against the President are #4 ("disregarding human rights and the basic principles of democracy", owing to the restrictions enacted due to COVID-19), #6 ("being investigated for or convicted of corruption", owing to the Uslar papers) and #9 ("being declared insane or otherwise unfit to act", owing to the President's misbehavior while in office). Reason #4 was included at the behest of Gosling, Fratton and Myers, whose parties have opposed the restrictions.

According to the Charter, a demand of incapacitation is first submitted in the House of Representatives, where a two-thirds majority vote is needed; it then goes to the Senate, where two votes are held: the first to ratify the incapacitation, and the second one to bar the incapacitated President from being elected to any public office for the next five years. A separate vote is held in the Senate to determine whether the President of the Senate (Lisa Smithson, D-KL) or the President pro tempore (Jim Babich, D-CH will soon cover this role, as he was first elected in 1999) will be appointed President for the remainder of the term.

BREAKING: Informal five-party summit to discuss incapacitation in progress

Times of Kalseri.svg CARNAFARRY, NK, 2021-09-12. Clive O'Hanrahan (D-Meath, NK), Cindy Vargas (S-Uslar, EV), Timothée Fratton (P-Rive-Droite, CI), Marvin Myers (R-St. Maurice, JV) and Rick Gosling (L-Westgate, JV) are currently holding an informal conference at O'Hanrahan's personal residence in Carnafarry, NK, to discuss the incapacitation of President Maksimilianus Ureska.

No official declaration has been issued yet, but it is speculated that reasons #6 (being investigated for or convicted of corruption) and #9 (being declared insane or otherwise unfit to act) will be summoned against the President.

Calhoun resigns from House of Representatives

Carnafarry Shamrock.svg CARNAFARRY, NK, 2021-09-09. Hon. George Calhoun has resigned from his seat in the House of Representatives to focus on his bid for the open New Kerry seat in the Senate, replacing the retiring John Q. Smathers. His announcement was met with standing ovation.

A by-election will be called within 90 days from today, with 8 December being the last possible day for this special election.

DeLuca-Cho: "Ureska can be removed from office for this"

Daily Tittle.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-09. Senators Tony DeLuca (S-LG) and Edwin Cho (S-TK), arguably the biggest in-party critics of Ureska, have issued a joint statement on the Uslar papers discovered yesterday:

This discovery, while shocking, sadly does not surprise us. President Maksimilianus Ureska has been acting with increasing dishonesty and self-serving sarcasm, blissfully ignoring the fact that this behavior is not professional, not presidential and most definitely not acceptable in politics.
Even though he cannot be sent to jail by a regular court for the events – the statute of limitations ran out in 2013 for the alleged latter transfers –, he most certainly can be removed from office for this. We will let everyone come to their own conclusion on whether he should be removed from office.
We are worried that this could develop – quoting our esteemed colleague Jim Babich – into a "loss of stability and an electoral hecatomb", and we are not sure whether President Ureska fully understands the consequences of this scandal-to-be.
While we hope, perhaps against hope, that this will be the last scandal of the Ureska administration, we cannot rule out that more may come, especially if we take his subpar maturity into account.
(At this point, it's a miracle article of impeachment #9 has not been summoned yet, considering that Max literally wrote "get f**ed" in a legal document. -Edwin)

Sen. Anthony "Statler" DeLuca and Sen. Edwin "Waldorf" Cho

The monikers "Statler and Waldorf" come from a now-deleted tweet from last year by President Ureska: "Don't mind me, just dealing with Statler and Waldorf again".

Suspicious receipts found in Uslar Borough Council building

Times of Kalseri.svg USLAR, EV, 2021-09-08. Suspicious papers documenting wire transfers made by Maksimilianus Ureska to individual members of the Borough Council, dating from November of 2006 to July of 2007 and amounting to about ħ500,000 in total, have been found. The documents, hidden under the desk in the Borough Governor's office, have been submitted to the Evalrian branch of the Police.

According to Uslar Finance Secretary Shawn Pettigrew (D), who had lost against Ureska in the election for Governor of the Borough in 2006, the first transfers may have taken place to facilitate Ureska's election to Governor, and later ones were done to cover up the first.

The Governor's Office is currently sealed off to unauthorized people.

The Sun's thoughts: why the SCP should be very worried

The Golden Sun.svg 2021-09-08, by Marina Skultety. The Social Cooperation Party may be euphoric right now, thanks to the passage of the referendum on cannabis, but it will not last for long: the latest figures from Hewitt Polls only include one hold (Evalria) and one flip (San Rafael) in favor of the SCP. Lág and Urgel, two historically red seats, seem to be heading towards the NDP and the LDP, respectively.

In Kalúen, Grant Hornwood's lead over Kenny Nakamura has become virtually non-existent, perhaps due to the incumbent's political closeness to Ureska. While not at an absolute majority in the polls, Nakamura can count on Julian DeVito's backup votes. The SCP has no such luck.

The two main problems with the SCP is that it is being represented by die-hard Ureskists in critical cantons like Lág and Takalim, where a more neutral, DeLuca/Cho-like candidate should have been nominated, and that these candidates are unappealing and distant from the people. The Liberal Democrats, perhaps pushed by the deep shame of 2019, have listened to the people by fielding Ryan Porcher in Lág (perhaps a baffling choice, but his backup votes will be helpful National Democrat Steve Hakobyan) and Mike Arnaud, the "People's Mayor" of Folkestone, thus capitalizing on the underestimation by the Reds. Similarly, the National Democrats are going all-in in Cartier Island (with beloved mayor Lucien Hébert), Lág (with Hakobyan) and Tigupoke (with Jon McKendrick). The few "people's candidates" chosen by the Reds were in cantons where winning was out of the question, such as Cartier Island (with Paul Lavigne) and Cape Sundervale (with Steve Jarrett).

The horrible projections for the Social Cooperation Party are also a symptom of a deeper problem: Maksimilianus Ureska. The President has always been a controversial figure, and his tough handling of the COVID-19 emergency only exacerbated the hatred for Ureska. Several Social Cooperation politicians have openly mused on forming an anti-Ureskist center-left party, be it for his pandemic policies, his keenness to impose new taxes or his off-putting sarcasm: unlike the Republicans, which seem to be heading towards irrelevance for the next few elections, this split may irreversibly damage the SCP.

Marijuana referendum passes

The Golden Sun.svg 2021-09-06. The Twenty-seventh Amendment has passed with 54.4% of the votes cast being in favor of the measure to repeal all federal laws penalizing the sale, possession and consumption of cannabis. This means that delivering cannabis across cantonal borders will no longer be illegal, and that medical marijuana may now be prescribed by public hospitals (in case of underaged patients, this will require parental consent).

In its second political test as a separate canton, Quincollia has been unpredictable for most of the night: it was the last canton for which a result could be called by KalCom.

President Ureska pledges to welcome Afghan refugees

The Golden Sun.svg EVALRIA, 2021-09-01. President Maksimilianus Ureska has announced that Kalșeri will pledge to take in a number of people fleeing Afghanistan. "The situation in Afghanistan is deeply concerning", said the President. "Many people who called Afghanistan home are now unable to do so, and are forced to find another place to call home."

Ministers John T. Malinauskas (Internal Affairs), Emanuel Diras (Infrastructure) and Elizabeth Kaufman (Health) have issued a joint statement on a "safe settling program" for Afghans looking to move to Kalșeri.

Jackson Leary confident in marijuana referendum chances

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-08-24. "I think it'll pass": these are the opening words used by Vice President Jackson Leary when he was asked about the upcoming marijuana referendum. "People all over the country have voiced their support for the depenalization of weed on a federal level." A similar stance to that of Kalșerians for Change – the Vice President's party – and the Libertarians, who have been the propelling force for this referendum.

Will the referendum mean legal weed in all of the cantons? "It might lead to higher demand for marijuana legalization laws throughout the cantons, but this shouldn't be taken for granted, especially in more rural areas."

What about the No voters? "It's their choice. We mustn't impose one option or the other on the citizens. We also have to understand why both sides are voting whichever option it is that they support."

Republicans hold first plenary session in Evalria

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-08-20. "This is the day we stop being a street gang and we start being a serious force for the country": these were the opening words used by Secretary Hon. Ioanis Hornata. During the first plenary session of the Republican Party, held at the National Convention Center in Evalria, the Republican Party has announced the adoption of the party constitution and held a series of votes regarding its internal positions and its strategies for future elections.

Following the session, former New Lothian Governor Regis Chandler III has been elected President of the Party, while Hornata has been confirmed to the position of Secretary for the next four years. For the 2022 House election, the strategy adopted by the Republicans will be to target rural areas, where most of the support for the party lies.

The plenary session was met with concern over the measures to contain the spread of COVID-19, deemed insufficient. Of the 1,305 attending, only a handful were seen wearing face masks, and social distancing was seldom applied.

Anti-vaxxer Representative Paisley Morgan tests positive for COVID

Hartleyville Reporter.svg HARTLEYVILLE, LN, 2021-08-17. Hon. Paisley Morgan (R-Nuia Heartland), who has opposed the vaccine and the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, has contracted COVID-19 and is now self-isolating.

Abigail Morato withdraws from Urgel Senate race and endorses Kanzler

[The Urgelian] ST. ADRIAN, 2021-08-12. Representative Abigail Morato (K-Postwick, UR) has withdrawn from the Senate race in October. "The thing is, Kanzler, Higi and I agree with each other on many issues," said Morato during a press conference. "Having three similar candidates is counter-productive."

She then encouraged would-be K-L voters to support Liberal Democratic candidate Michelle Kanzler, perhaps in an attempt to appease Libertarians, who had previously expressed unease over Morato's support of firearm background checks, as well as tighter environmental regulations. This marks the first time Kalșerians for Change has endorsed a Liberal Democrat in a national election.

Percitanian Bay Hospital changes policy regarding limited beds

The Percy Reporter.svg PERCY, KL, 2021-08-11. Following the controversy around the Percitanian Bay Hospital's decision to deny beds , Dr. Frank Dubke has announced that the proposed policy is no longer required, and that "an alternative arrangement has been found". It is yet unknown what this "alternative arrangement" consists, but it is speculated that hospitalized people who had opposed the vaccine and pandemic-related restrictions will incur additional charges.

"Anti-distraction" dress codes abolished in public Evalrian schools

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-08-09. The Chamber of Aldermen has passed (13-3) the Fair Clothing Act, which significantly relaxes dress codes across all public schools in the City. This act will take effect on September 1, when schools reopen. Strapless shirts, crop tops, tank tops, skirts and shorts are mentioned in the bill as examples of clothing now deemed acceptable.

"All these sexist dress codes have done is perpetrate the myths that boys are not responsible for their actions, and that girls' bodies are nothing but a distraction, thereby objectifying girls," affirmed Secretary of Education Debby Johnson, who sponsored the Act. "The freedom of self-expression has been one of the core tenets of Evalrian society, and it's time for schools to acknowledge that."

Another piece of legislation that will come into effect on September 1 is the Shoeless Education Act, which makes students take their shoes off before entering classrooms – also across Evalrian public schools.

Percy private hospital under fire for denying beds to anti-vaxxers

The Percy Reporter.svg PERCY, KL, 2021-08-03. The Percitanian Bay Hospital has been at the center of a controversy, stemming from its decision to ban opponents of the COVID-19 vaccine and other pandemic-related restrictions from taking up spots in the intensive care unit, as outlined by this post by hospital director Dr. Frank Dubke:

Following an emergency session, the Percitanian Bay Hospital will not grant intensive care unit (ICU) beds to patients who have shared anti-scientific statements on social media. Allow us to explain the reasoning behind our decision:

  1. ICU beds are subject to limited availability, and the lack of free spots has forced us to turn patients away.
  2. This does not count as discrimination in any way. These people have constantly endangered our well-being with their idiotic conspiracy theories, and it's high time they learned to face the consequences of their own actions.

It may be unfair, but desperate times require desperate measures, and the last thing we want is for all Kalșerians to suffer any longer because of the actions of a few uncultured simpletons who can't tell fact from fiction.

—Frank Dubke MD, Director of the Percitanian Bay Hospital

Minister of Health Elizabeth Kaufman has announced an emergency reunion with the Supreme Court, Governor Andréas Kortin Sau and Kalúen Health Secretary J. Elton Quinn to determine whether the Hospital has the authority to enact such a move. "While understandable and borne out of reasonable assumptions, this announcement is deeply concerning when it comes to fair and equal access to health care", Kaufman added.

Meanwhile, the PBH has also met considerable praise throughout social media.

Gov. Kowalczyk proposes ħ25,000 bonus to encourage moving to Quincollia

Vemin Chronicle.svg VEMÍN, 2021-07-19. In order to tackle the everlasting problem of people and businesses moving out of Quincollia to settle elsewhere in Kalșeri, Governor Tom Kowalczyk has launched a plan to encourage settlement in the canton: individuals moving to the canton will receive ħ25,000, and corporations moving their offices there will be given a tax credit.

"West Virginia is having a similar problem, and they're offering a $12,000 bonus to tackle it," said Gov. Kowalczyk. "It only makes sense that we do something like that."

The method of collection of the funds for this program is still being debated in the Constitutional Assembly.

New Kalhan-speaking representation bill arises

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-07-07. After a lenghty and heated debate over its consequences, the Kalhan-Speaking Cantonal Delegation Members Act (KSCDMA), authored by Representatives Iosefina Malsi (D-McDermott, TK) and Robert Șalsi (S-Rișen, LG), has been withdrawn after the two authors announced their support for the Kalhan Representation in Congress Act (KRCA), authored by Rep. Ioanis Hornata (R-Land's End, KL) and Sen. Garry McClennan (D-NK). "You all know I am usually against quotas of any kind, but this underrepresentation of Kalhan speakers in their own home is nothing short of a tragedy" said Hornata, while discussing the new bill.

Rather than mandate that 79 of the 239 (soon to be 242) MCs be native Kalhan-speakers, like the KSCDMA did, the KRCA proposes to add 79 (65 in the House, 14 in the Senate) seats to the existing ones, bringing the total number of MCs to 318 (soon to be 321).

For the Senate, the Kalhan seats will be elected in the same way as regular Senators are. For the House of Representatives, however, things will work differently: party-list proportional representation will be used, and eleven multi-member constituencies encompassing cantons will be used, rather than the usual single-member districts. The number of PR seats allotted to each canton is linked to the percentage of the Kalșerian population that resides in the canton. Three aspects that are still being debated are:

Due to their low population, Cape Sundervale and Cartier Island will be part of the New Kerry PR block, and Quincollia will be part of the New Lothian PR block.

Vaytay users launch crowdfunding for KALMORA team

Sports and Rec.svg FOLKESTONE, TK, 2021-06-30. Three habitual users of the vaytay.kl forums have launched a crowdfunding campaign for a Takalese KALMORA team: Steve "SteveK" Karatarakis, Tom "Abe Lincoln from Clone High" Conroy and Alex "Ham Steamer 3000" DeCampo. "It's time to put Takalim back on the maps and give that garagista vibe back to KALMORA!" is the sentence with which the campaign description opens. The FAQ section gives a date of "2022, possibly".

Technical experience will be on their side: Tom Conroy's father was a mechanic for Wyndell, and Steve K. has worked for a number of teams, including Pan-Evalrian, Poxton's (now Spearwind) and Zellerman.

The target has been set at ħ50,000, double the ħ25,000 joining fee. The signatures of those who pledge ħ750 or more will be included in the livery.

Heinzville, TK becomes first "nicotine-free city"

Lennoxton Gazette.svg HEINZVILLE, TK, 2021-06-28. The Town of Heinzville has become the first "nicotine-free city" in Kalșeri. Located between Folkestone and Murphyville, and with a stunning view to Mount Takal, this town of about fifteen thousand people is known throughout the country for its picturesque downtown, for its flowery alleys and its high cost of living. From July 1, the possession, import, export and distribution of products containing nicotine, such as cigarettes, cigars and some brands of electronic cigarettes, will be punished with a ħ500 fine for every illegal item.

"We have carefully listened to what our citizens had to say, and I'm glad we can say we acted on it", said Bob Zanasi, 48, the four-term Liberal Democratic Mayor and a former smoker. Zanasi's struggle against nicotine started when several Heinzvillians tagged him across social media and told him about used cigarettes and empty packages polluting the streets. In March 2021, Zanasi instituted a cleanup program throughout the town, and the ban on products containing nicotine passed unanimously soon after the end of the program.

Lengthy debates over Kalhan-speaking quota bill

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-06-28. The Kalhan-Speaking Cantonal Delegation Members Act, proposed by Representatives Iosefina Malsi (D-McDermott, TK) and Robert Șalsi (S-Rișen, LG), has been the source of disagreements in the House. The Act, which would require that at lest a third of cantonal delegations in Congress be composed of native Kalhan speakers, has been lauded by most members of the Social Cooperation Party and Kalșerians for Change. Marvin Myers (R-St. Maurice, JV), on the other hand, slammed the Act as "a ham-fisted way to force protection, disregarding worthy candidates who do not speak Kalhan".

If the KSCDMA were to be applied today, none of the cantons would be compliant with it:

  • Cape Sundervale (0/3; 1 required);
  • Cartier Island (0/6; 2 required);
  • Chalmersville (0/7; 3 required);
  • Evalria (0/12; 4 required);
  • Janval (2/19; 7 required);
  • Kalúen (1/33; 11 required);
  • Lág (1/29; 10 required);
  • New Kerry (0/23; 8 required);
  • New Lothian (1/16; 6 required);
  • Quincollia (0/5; 2 required);
  • San Rafael (0/15; 5 required);
  • Takalim (3/28; 10 required);
  • Tigupoke (1/8; 3 required);
  • Urgel (1/18; 6 required).

The current Congress has 10 Ralagia, a far cry from the 78 out of 236 required by the Act. Foreign Representatives would be exempt from the provisions of the Act.

"This is tantamount to segregation", said Cartier Island Governor René Rodian. "This act would create more Evalrian interference and ban cantons from fully expressing their uniqueness." Another flaw that was pointed out during the discussion is that the Act would not prevent parties from just sending all their Ralagia in the House of Representatives and ignoring the Senate altogether.

Smithson-Ricciardi: Republicans are hampering LDP chances

The Percy Reporter.svg PERCY, KL, 2021-06-25. Lisa Smithson-Ricciardi (LDP-KL), President of the Senate, seemed not to be in the best of moods when the Reporter asked her about the Republican plan for the upcoming Senate elections:

Let it be clear to everyone listening that I do not condone what Hornata is doing.
He claims that we, the Liberal Democrats, have done nothing over the last few years, which is simply not true. We have proposed more bills than anyone else in Congress. [...]
Keep in mind that I do not have an issue with people who leave the party. That is fine, ideas change over time. What I do have an issue with is the fact that these Republicans are working with us in half the cantons, and against us in the other half. Hornata's little stunt is actively hampering our chances at achieving a stable majority in the Senate, and there is a serious risk that it will harm the country in the long run.

"This act is essential for a smooth transition to a form of government more similar to that of the other cantons", said Mayor Alfred Coombe.

The Sun's thoughts: Are we heading towards a Fourth Restructuring?

The Golden Sun.svg 2021-06-22. The rise of the Christian Democrats in place of the Whigs, the birth of the Liberal Democratic Party, the rise of Kalșerians for Change, and now the birth of the Republican Party.

Ioanis Hornata's new party has already made headlines despite being born less than a week ago: it quickly announced its platform (pro-life, anti-gun control, anti-term limits, in favor of letting cantons decide whether to teach Creationism, anti-KHS, pro-death penalty, anti-federal minimum wage, anti-recreational weed, anti-Ministry of Social Insurance), seventeen Members of Congress, Alejandra Ríos Soriano, Regis Chandler III and other well-known conservative politicians have joined the party, and it stated that it is looking for candidates for the 2022 races, including the next House election.

In our survey, 27% of the 6,819 electors identifying as Liberal Democrats said that they would vote for a Republican candidate rather than a Liberal Democrat; 15% of Libertarians and 9% of Social Cooperationists seem to think about voting for a Republican, as well. These statistics suggest that there is at least some request for a "true center-right party that was free from infighting and was of national relevance", using Hornata's own words, especially in rural areas, where conservative Liberal Democrats and Libertarians generally perform well.

Of course, the future is unpredictable, but Republicans may well be on track to reshape Kalșerian politics for years to come.

Moriarty: Hornata leaving would be "political suicide"

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-06-19. "This is the worst possible time to leave the party": these are the words used by Liberal Democratic House spokesperson Ashley Moriarty (LN) to speak of Ioanis Hornata's secession from the Party. "We're in the middle of an important election cycle. Hornata's wishes for immediate action may very well translate into avoidable losses and political suicide." Similarly, Jim Babich (CH), the LDP spokespserson in the Senate, has expressed worries over "loss of stability" and an "electoral hecatomb".

In response to the comments, Hon. Ioanis Hornata has written that the Republicans will endorse "the appropriate candidate".

Hon. Hornata and fourteen other Congressmen create new party

The Percy Reporter.svg PERCY, KL, 2021-06-18. Hon. Ioanis Hornata (LD-Land's End, KL) has posted an image bearing the following message across all major social media:

My constituents,
For 19 years, I have served as your Representative, under the Liberal Democratic banner. I used to take pride in being the "bluest" Representative in the house, and I'd be lying if I said that this is not the case even today.
However, I can't help but notice that the Liberal Democratic Party has disintegrated over the years. The Blues couldn't bring themselves to do anything without facing a crippling fear of breaking an increasingly frail unity between the left wing and the right wing of the party.
For so long have I patiently waited for this to stop, but it has become clear that this party-mandated vagueness is unlikely to go away any time soon.
I have no choice but to leave the Liberal Democrats. It was a difficult decision, but it had to be done, and I am not the only Congressman to have made this choice. Another important factor behind my choice is that Kalșeri has never had a true center-right party that was free from infighting and was of national relevance.
This is why I and fourteen other Members of Congress are forming the Republican Party, a party for concerned Kalșerians who believe in a federal Kalșeri and in a sensible leadership, and neither want a dictatorship imposed by Evalria under the guise of cheap "tolerance" while the Liberal Democrats stay idle, nor a fascist state run by a psychopath.

Hon. Ioanis Hornata

The following Members of Congress have signed Hornata's declatation:

  • Sen. Richard Heinemann (LD-JV)
  • Tomas Șínisi (SC-Bismarck Bay, JV)
  • George Freytag (L-Cape Spurry, JV)

SCP considers ditching delegates for presidential primaries

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-06-16. In a press conference, John Keys has announced that a "truly democratic way of selecting the presidential candidate" is in the works. According to the plan shown throughout the conference, registered members of the party would get to choose the candidate throughout several weeks in Spring; if no candidate reaches an absolute majority of preferences, a run-off vote between the two most popular candidates will then be held in early Summer. The cantons with lower population would vote first.

The biggest differences between this plan and the current manner of selecting the candidate is that delegates will be abolished, and that Great Wednesday will most likely be held earlier than its traditional mid-June date. The selected candidate will thus have more time to focus on their own platform and the commercials.

Members of Congress Zehra Altin (EV), Joel Porter (JV) and Stephanie Kay (LG) have spoken in favor of this model.

Former High Summoner Pete Garnier passes away at 88

The Percy Reporter.svg PERCY, KL, 2021-06-11. Former High Summoner Peter W. Garnier, Sr. has died in his sleep at the Percy General Hospital, where he was recovering from a bad bout of pneumonia. He was 88 at the time of his death.

Known as a lively and modest man, Pete Garnier tirelessly fought for the rights of the cantons against what he saw as an "unbearable Evalrian meddling". He is survived by his sister Patty, the current Mother of the House; his wife Janeane; his children Pete Jr, William and Esther, and five grandchildren. A private funeral will be held on Monday.

EPICA signed into law

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-06-09. President Maksimilianus Ureska has signed the Electronic Payment Information Collection Act (EPICA), which requires companies to explicitly mention whether customers will have to state their payment information for products that are offered for free in any degree on the Internet, as well as the purpose of the collection of such data.

Takalim ditches raw milk

Lennoxton Gazette.svg LENNOXTON, TK, 2021-06-04. With a 36-9 vote in the Cantonal Assembly, Kalúen has subscribed to the Inter-Cantonal Raw Milk Ban Protocol, becoming the fourth canton to ban the sale and consumption of raw milk.

The Protocol does not affect products derived from raw milk, such as cheese and ice cream, as they are already covered by federal legislation.

Concerned Sundronians to disrupt gay protection bill

The Sundronian.svg CAPE SUNDERVALE, 2021-05-24. Split from the Conservative Party in protest to the introduction of the Homosexual Protection Act in the City Chamber, which would set harsher penalties for discrimination of homosexual people, the Party of Concerned Christian Sundronians has announced that its members will disrupt the voting session for the Act "by any means necessary".

Its founder and President, George Burnell, son of Mary, the long-time leader of the Union of Christian Consumers, has found himself involved in several controversial episodes due to his opposition to same-sex marriages, often intruding himself both in the City Chamber and in the House of Representatives in Evalria.

Chances of the Concerned to spoil the upcoming Senate election for the Social Cooperation Party are currently low, and Clinton Naismith, the incumbent, is expected to win reelection fairly easily, but the Concerned have expressed multiple times that the only way the Conservative-PCCS split can be undone is by "withdrawing support for this lascivious legislation".

Former VP Judy Bernese confident of Senate chances

Lennoxton Gazette.svg LENNOXTON, TK, 2021-05-21. In an interview with the Gazette, former Vice President, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Ambassador to Italy Judy Bernese stated that she is confident in her chances of winning the Liberal Democratic nomination to the Senate to succeed the retiring Edwin Cho (SCP).

In the latest polling figures from Absolut, Bernese currently sits at 19%, second to former Mayor of Folkestone Mike Arnaud, at 27%.

Urgel Lib Secretary supports Abigail Morato for Senate

[The Urgelian] ST. ADRIAN, UR, 2021-05-15. "During this debate, Cantonal Congressman Ulric Smith has listed several points in favor of Representative Abigail Morato from Postwick", wrote Dave Zaparty, Secretary of the Urgel Libertarian Party. "I believe Mr. Smith has made a few compelling points, and after a deep analysis of Morato's policies, I think there is a good chance we Urgel Libertarians will nominate her."

Elected in 2017, Representative for Postwick Abigail Morato, 32, the newest member of the Congress delegation of Kalșerians for Change, has enjoyed consistent popularity within her constituency, thanks to her position as a link between socially liberal policies and greater welfare, as well as her refusal to bow down to lobbying.

Morato has also made news due to her walking barefoot as much as possible. She claims to have started doing so after seeing a homeless man begging in a sidewalk in Whiteriver. When she noticed that the man was not wearing shoes, she took her shoes off and gave them to him.

Sharon Luzzato appointed SCP Spokesperson in Senate

Lennoxton Gazette.svg LENNOXTON, TK, 2021-05-10. Junior Senator Sharon Luzzato has been chosen as the new Spokesperson for the Social Cooperation Party in the Senate, replacing the retiring Tony DeLuca from Lág, who had been serving since April 2019.

Majority of Sundronians support abolishing post of Governor General

The Sundronian.svg CAPE SUNDERVALE, 2021-05-07. Four days after the press conference in which Governor General Rothes called his post "increasingly useless", our polling team have surveyed residents in the city-canton to determine whether said office should be abolished. Of the 9,379 responses we registered, 65% of the respondents believe that it should be abolished. Among those who answered No, the discourse is dominated by the question "why change?". A further 9% participated in the survey, but were not sure which side to take.

Currently, the Governor General functions as the head of state of Cape Sundervale, and is also the cantonal Senator for life. Its abolition would require a cantonal referendum.

GovGen Rothes considers resignation

The Sundronian.svg CAPE SUNDERVALE, 2021-05-03. Governor General William Rothes declared his intentions to resign from the post of Governor General, which he considers "increasingly useless".

An accomplished writer, Rothes was appointed by the Chamber of Commons in 2013 following the death of Joseph N. Willkies.

KALMORA eyeing the States for 2022

Sports and Rec.svg COWHILL, TG, 2021-04-20. Kalșerian-American beverage entrepreneur Trip Midasi has tweeted an image of a Stars and Stripes-clad KALMORA car with "2022" written above it. The team, currently without a name, will be the first from outside Kalșeri to compete in KALMORA. Midasi has replied to his own tweet of the announcement, encouraging potential fans to send their ideas for a name.

Midasi has been connected to several NASCAR teams throughout the years. More recently, he tried to purchase the Spearwind (formerly Poxton's) team, but the deal fell through.

This announcement comes at a time where KALMORA has openly expressed the idea of expanding its calendar to include some races in the United States; Lime Rock Park in Connecticut, the New Hampshire Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway have been the prime candidates for inclusion.

Sen. Heinemann withdraws re-election bid

The Janvalian Sun.svg HUTCHINSON, JV, 2021-04-15. Senator Richard Heinemann has announced the suspension of his campaign for re-election to the Senate due to his involvement in a sex scandal. As surfaced by a home recording, Heinemann was seen fondling a woman and making unwanted comments about her.

"I am sorry for all the distress I've caused her", said the Senator during the interview in which he suspended the campaign. The consensus is that the apology was not enough. "This behavior is simply unacceptable for a representative of the Republic", LDP Spokesperson Jim Babich wrote.

New Serigéa Chief Priest elected

Hartleyville Reporter.svg HARTLEYVILLE, LN, 2021-04-08. After nine rounds of voting, a successor to Father Lerfuan has been elected by the Serigéa priests: Zoé Vemingi, Superintendent of the Province of Sebring, LN, who has taken the name Iușa, in honor of the first Queen of Lág.

Born in 1975, Iușa has expressed the intention to bring the Serigéa back to Evalria, to encourage the spreading of the Serigéa outside Kalșeri and to encourage more women to participate in the traditional religion.

Father Lerfuan abdicates

Hartleyville Reporter.svg HARTLEYVILLE, LN, 2021-04-03. Father Lerfuan has abdicated from the position of par, the spiritual head of the Serigéa. "I leave with a sense of happiness and accomplishment," he said shortly after the formal announcement. "There is nothing left for me to do."

Born Ioen Petrus Samenhal in 1949, propelled by the lack of a central authority for the pre-Christian polytheistic belief of Kalșeri, Father Lerfuan founded Șin Gea in 1995.

Now that the position is vacant, all Superintendents of the clerical provinces of Șin Gea are to go to the Sariaseri Hartleyville'e and choose the new par.

The canton-by-canton strategy of each party for the Congress elections

The Golden Sun.svg 2021-03-25, by Rick Penniman. As the parties are gearing up towards the two key elections in the next 12 months, strategies are starting to form, and primaries are starting to shape up.

We will start with the Senate elections coming this October.

  • Cape Sundervale: The Liberal Democrats and the CS Conservatives have enjoyed a solid relationship for the last thirty years, and this is not going to change any time soon. Cape Sundervale has been among the most politically consistent cantons, seldom shifting away from its place in the center-to-center-right.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • Conservative: Clinton Naismith, the incumbent. The scion of six-term Senator Norman Dale-Crockett and his efforts to build a true Sundervellian identity, Naismith has so far kept his promise to fight tooth and nail to keep "what makes Cape Sundervale unique".
      • SCP: Steve Jarrett. The writer and malware researcher is well aware that he is about to fight an uphill battle, but, as he likes to say, "it ain't over till the fat lady sings"; his strategy is to go beyond party affiliations and sway the electorate by use of his Senate program.
  • Cartier Island: The Cartierois National Party has yielded to the Liberal Democrats in the Senate, but their ideology remains: Francophonie, strong Catholicism and autonomy.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Anne-Marie Gosselin, the incumbent. She is among the most recognizable moderate politicians in the country, as she masterfully balances liberalism and Fabronism, still popular among the older generation.
      • SCP: Paul Lavigne. The teacher from Henriville is in a mission to sway Cartier Island to the left. He will perform well in Henriville, and the fact that he isn't a career politician may resonate with those less trusting of politicians.
  • Chalmersville: Chalmersville is easily among the most liberal cantons, but Yarkies have a history of flip-flopping between parties, making this city-canton one to watch out for.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: The Blues may either try a seasoned politician, like Jerry Hadley, or play the name recognition card by nominating Liz Garner, Phil's cousin. Either way, the Blues will be dealing with a decidedly centrist politician.
      • SCP: Lauren Krzystofowicz, the incumbent. She is one of the most outspoken fighters for gender equality and ending discrimination, and she is not willing to give up her seat. Not without a fight, at least.
  • Evalria: The One and Only hasn't had a Liberal Democratic Senator since 2003.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Peter Yarmolenko. While fairly liberal and popular among the upper class of the city, connecting with voters outside his niche will be quite the challenge. I'd suggest fielding Jason Quinn instead.
      • SCP: Ben Oyala, the incumbent. Oyala is popular among the LGBT+ voting group, as he was one of the authors of the Twenty-fifth Amendment; his liberal approach towards cannabis has earned him respect among Libertarians, as well. Unless he screws up spectacularly, Oyala is in for an easy ride back to Mecklenburg Palace.
  • Janval: The Volunteer Canton has been a reliable Blue territory, although the Libertarians have been fairly successful in the last few local elections. While Hutchinson and Jarronburg are solidly Red, this has usually not been enough for the SCP to win in Janval. The Libertarian electorate will play a key role in this election.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Richard Heinemann, the incumbent. His clear positions make him a very popular politician in the canton, although there are some points of contention, such as his opposition to BLM and same-sex marriages.
      • SCP: Either Daryl Schneider or Joel Porter. Both are socially liberal, but also in favor of simplifying the purchase of firearms, a topic dear to Janvalians.
  • Kalúen: Another unpredictable canton when it comes to party loyalty, much like Chalmersville. Kalúen is a microcosm of Kalșeri, and often serves as a demographic thermometer.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Kenny Nakamura. Son of former Minister Richard Nakamura, Kenny is in favor of ending "non-essential" COVID-19 restrictions (much to his father's dissatisfaction), financing the nighttime entertainment industry and granting Falkorians a "self-determination vote". He will have Asian Kaluonians, a small but important base, on his side.
      • SCP: Grant Hornwood, the incumbent. While Hornwood is socially liberal, he is not afraid of using captivating rhetoric to please the rural electorate, especially when it comes to farming and fishing.
  • Lág: With Tony DeLuca out of the picture, both parties will have the difficult task of finding an appropriate heir to his catch-all politics.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Ryan Porcher. The KALMORA pilot-turned-People's Assemblyman can count on the rural electorate, but can he breach the big Red cities and their "sophisticated" tastes?
      • SCP: Representative Jake Valaitis. Branbury, Rișen, Stroughton and the seaside counties like him, but he will have to convince the rural electorate as well.
  • New Kerry: Irish Kalșerians have been routinely described as hard to please, meaning that party loyalty often hides a few asterisks, and winning the Irish vote usually requires compromise.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Representative George Calhoun. If you want to win in New Kerry, call Calhoun: he has enjoyed cross-party popularity even before becoming the most vocal New Kerrian Representative. Phineas Bush, on the other hand, seems to be running an insipid campaign: I don't understand how he's managed to garner any support at all with his (frankly) boring talks.
      • SCP: Representative Tabitha Harrison. She has managed to attract Catholic women and the younger groups to her side, and has promised to deliver an exciting campaign to bring back the Red in New Kerry after thirty years. Shauna McMilligan, a young Cantonal Assemblywoman, is also an interesting candidate.
  • New Lothian: Now that Quincollia is its own canton, the SCP has a slightly higher chance of winning. The Liberal Democrats, however, can count on the support of the local Libertarians.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Zeke Snodgrass. He may look like a standard right-leaning Blue, but his virulent hatred of exclusivity contracts for sporting events has solidified his popularity among the male crowd.
      • SCP: Rob Molinew. The journalist has dissected the electoral promises of the Liberal Democrats time and time again, painting a clear image of immediate need for change.
  • Quincollia: The newest canton of Kalșeri and perhaps the most exciting one. The Blues do enjoy unmatched popularity in the Five Hills, but trying to fit the average Quincollian voter into a single political box is tricky. The Movement for Action has a concrete chance of gaining either one or both of these key seats; however, the center-right-to-right-wing electorate may be split over whether to go blue or go silver, and the SCP may just have the possibility to advance to the second round, if not win both seats.
    • Most likely candidates:
      • LDP: John Rundgren and Emma Hóltansi. Hóltansi may be young, but she is experienced when it comes to the Senate. Put her with John Rundgren, the four-term mayor of Vemín, and the Blues will be looking at a surefire victory.
      • SCP: Dick Greene and Oliver Ness. While not the most exciting candidates out there, the SCP is looking at two pragmatic men whose programs include clear points.
      • M4A: Henry Chandler II and Jerry McNamara. Two influential populist personalities are what the Movement may (and probably should) have in mind to conquer their first Senate seats in almost ninety years.
  • San Rafael: The Pleiades Canton has been a historically blue canton, although it has consistently shifted towards the SCP in the last few elections. Could this election be the moment the SCP has been waiting for?
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Rómulo Sánchez Del Olmo, the incumbent. While it is true that he is a strong Sorianist, his ability to mediate has made him the face of the Rafaelite section of the Blue Party.
      • SCP: Marilena Novak. Arguably the leader of the Red Wave, Novak can count on the urban vote and that of the Mi'kmaq, a small but vocal electoral group.
  • Takalim: The Limestone Canton has always been interesting and unpredictable due to the bond between the Red stronghold of Lennoxton and the decidedly Blue farmlands and hillsides.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Mike Arnaud. The former mayor of Folkestone owes much of his popularity to his capability of resonating with the average Northern Takalese. The more conservative Liberal Democrats might follow former VP Judy Bernese instead.
      • SCP: With Edwin Cho out of the picture, the Takalim primary will resemble a battle royale. The amiable Representative Brian Kristensen is currently the most popular of the Red candidates, and I won't be surprised if the party goes with him.
  • Tigupoke: Outside of Cowhill and Scorpion Bay, Tigupoke is actually among the most socially conservative cantons of the country.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Liza Tillson. The young blogger and political pundit has become the face of the Kalșerian conservative movement. While she is popular among conservatives of all ages, her run may cause a rift between liberals and conservatives within the party.
      • SCP: Hobbs not running again after forty years has certainly complicated the matter. The most popular candidate is currently former Governor Thomas Hartovich. While Tom certainly has experience, he cannot play the youth card: he is 68. If the SCP wants to properly counter Liza Tillson, I think they should bring Charlie Gilchrist out of retirement; despite not being in the Senate for more than six years, Gilchrist is still very popular in Tigupoke.
  • Urgel: The Liberal Democrats are looking to give the final blow to the crumbling Red stronghold. Like Tigupoke, Urgel is one of the places where being red does not necessarily mean being progressive.
    • Most likely candidate:
      • LDP: Michelle Kanzler. Socially liberal and in favor of a streamlined and "sensible" economy, the Leader of the Opposition in the Cantonal Congress has managed to unite the growing number of Urgelians who are fed up with the SCP and the "oppressive nanny state".
      • SCP: Penélope Higi, the incumbent. If it ain't broken, don't fix it, and this certainly seems to be the case with this one. Although Higi will have to fend off Kanzler's challenge, she remains a popular senator among the younger demographics.

What about the House election in 2022? What do the parties have in mind?

  • The Social Cooperation Party is looking to expunge the Blue strongholds of San Rafael and New Kerry.
  • The Liberal Democrats will target Lág, Urgel and Tigupoke. Historically irrelevant for the Blues, these three cantons have become the key to a relative majority in 2022.
  • The number-one strategy among the Libertarians is to keep as many of the 2017 seats as possible, as well as expand their control in rural parts of the country, especially in Janval, Quincollia, Falkor and Urgel.
  • Unless Kalșerians for Change decides to adopt a fundamentally different strategy from that of the Reds, the Greens may yield to the Bull.
  • The PNC and the Conservatives have declared their intentions not to pursue "useless challenges" outside their cantons.
  • Quincollia may become the hotspot for the Movement for Action.

Renatus Lágan passes away

Hartleyville Reporter.svg GEESEEKULKOO, LN, 2021-02-25. Right-wing activist Renatus Lágan has passed away in the Geeseekulkoo General Hospital, three days after his birthday. He had been battling alcoholism since 2013.

"Mr. Lágan's was an extremely serious case", said Chief Physician Dr. Frank Conci. "We thought we could recover him, but a series of unexpected conditions made it increasingly difficult, to the point where he would have required constant care even in the best-case scenario."

Jerry McNamara announces Senate run

Vemin Chronicle.svg VEMÍN, QN, 2021-02-15. SNVN-FM radio host Jerry McNamara has announced that he has "filed the necessary paperwork to run for the Senate."

McNamara's program consists of reducing funding for "nonsensical public programs", simplifying sale and ownership of firearms throughout the country, ending COVID-19-related restrictions, banning abortion, reintroducing God in schools and abolishing the national education curriculum.

"Tigupoke needs change", says Liza Tillson

The Cowhill Farmer.svg COWHILL, TG, 2021-02-12. "Tigupoke needs change, and I can help deliver it. That's why I'm running for Senator this year." These are the words used by blogger, right-wing activist and 2020 gubernatorial candidate Liza Tillson to announce her candidacy for the Senate.

If elected, Tillson has stated that she will "do her best" to lift all restrictions related to COVID-19, to introduce "spirituality" back in schools and to "bring upon fast and fair justice".

Rep. Șínisi: term limits are "arbitrary and draconian"

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-02-09. Representative Tomas Șínisi (SCP-JV), one of the more conservative members of the SCP, has criticized the ratification of the 26th amendment as "a disastrous move", denouncing term limits as "an arbitrary and draconian way of forcing change at all costs".

Several prominent members of the Social Cooperation Party have shared Șínisi's statement, sometimes praising him, including Minister of Labor Al Backer, Senator Edwin Cho (SCP-TK), Governor of Urgel Viliam Gerna and former Governor of Tigupoke Thomas Hartovich, who is seeking to replace the retiring Hyman Cobbs in the Senate.

Jus sanguinis amendment dies in the House

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-02-03. Another amendment appreciated by Matthew Chandler has died in the house: the amendment that would have established jus sanguinis in the country, thus requiring one or both parents to be Kalșerian for the child to be automatically given Kalșerian citizenship, has been defeated 36-155-9.

First introduced in 1967, no date on the proposed amendment had been set following a heated debate in the House. The Social Cooperationists, the Libertarians and Kalșerians for Change have voted uninanimously against the amendment.

Charter amendment punishing misuse of flag dies in the House

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-01-29. Despite the efforts by Matthew Chandler and Ioanis Hornata to sponsor the 1958 amendment on harsher penalties for "misusing" the national flag, the result of the voting is crystal-clear: 39-147-14, far from the three-fifths majority quorum needed for the bill to be forwarded to the Senate.

The amendment, introduced under the Scioni presidency, would have introduced a mandatory one-year sentence and a ħ5,000 fine for willingly mutilating, burning, soiling or otherwise "desecrating" the national flag.

Below are the results of the vote.

  • Yes: 39/200 (19.5%)
    • Social Cooperation: 7/80
    • Kalșerians for Change: none/13
    • Libertarians: none/36
    • Liberal Democrats: 29/60

  • No: 147/200
    • Social Cooperation: 71/80
    • Kalșerians for Change: 13/13
    • Libertarians: 36/36
    • Liberal Democrats: 26/60

Shoes off at school? Evalria Secretary of Education thinks about it

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-01-26. In a public briefing, Debby Johnson, Evalrian Secretary of Education since 2019, stated that she has formed a research commission on whether a shoes-off policy should be implemented for public schools and pre-school facilities in the city-canton, similar to what schools in Northern European countries do.

A study by the University of Bournemouth (UK) has found a positive link between not wearing shoes and paying more attention during class, which leads to better grades, as well as quieter classrooms and better behavior. Another argument brought forward by proponents of shoeless education is that schools will be cleaner, thus not requiring them to pay as much for cleaning.

HS Morelos announces round of "housekeeping" votes

The Golden Sun.svg EVALRIA, 2021-01-25. High Summoner Diego Y. Morelos has announced that agreements have been reached to "exhume" seven proposed Charter amendments that have had no set date ever since their introduction:

  1. a 1958 amendment which would set harsher penalties for "misusing" the national flag;
  2. a 1967 amendment which would abolish jus soli rights;
  3. a 1977 amendment which would extend compulsory voting to referenda;
  4. a 1984 amendment which would ban political attack ads;
  5. a 1989 amendment which would introduce a mandatory quiz before voting;
  6. a 1994 amendment which would set a two-term limit for the President;
  7. a 1997 amendment which would lower the number of Supreme Court judges, from seven to five.

For an amendment to become effective, it must first reach a 60% quorum in both houses of Congress (120 for the House, 23 for the Senate), and then an absolute majority of Yes votes in a nationwide referendum is required. However, unlike in normal laws, no set date for a vote in Congress is required for proposed amendments right after the end of debate.

The Sun's Thoughts (by Rick Penniman): Obviously these amendments come from other times and other political dynamics, so they may seem "out of touch" with today's electorate.

  • 1958: we expect strong opposition to this amendment from the Libertarians; it has a high risk of dying in the House.
  • 1967: the Social Cooperation Party, Kalșerians for Change and the Libertarians being in favor of jus soli means that this amendment will die before it is even brought up.
  • 1977: Libertarians aren't too keen on compulsory voting, but everyone else has spoken in favor of it – or at least not against it. With the right amount of encouragement, it might pass.
  • 1984: it will most likely pass. Not that anyone really cares for political ads in the first place.
  • 1989: even discarding its nonexistent popularity, such a test would be unfeasible. How are the organizers to know that a potential voter isn't cheating in some way without gross violations of privacy?
  • 1994: it follows a similar vein to the proposed 26th Amendment, so it might pass. Again, Libertarians will most likely oppose it.
  • 1997: only K4C has complained about the number of Supreme Court judges, leaving the other 187 wondering "what's the point?".

The Echo undergoes internal restructuring

National Echo.svg HARTLEYVILLE, LN, 2021-01-21. Matthew Chandler's media corporation, Echo Publishing, Inc, has undergone an internal reorganization.

  • Matthew Chandler has left the position of CEO of Echo Publishing to his son John Clarence IV, keeping the position of President;
  • Echo TV and Echo Radio have been renamed Falcon News, and Henry II – brother of John IV – has been nominated its CEO, replacing the hospitalized Renatus Lágan.

Babich: "Resigning now would be disastrous"

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-01-19. Following the anti-term-limit declaration by nine members of Congress, including two LDP senators, Liberal Democrat spokesperson Jim Babich (CH) issued a statement, where he warned Richard Heinemann (JV) and Walt Knudsen (LN) – the two senators in question – that "resigning now would have disastrous effects on the stability of our party, of the Senate and of the country".

If the referendum is approved, the resignation of either Knudsen or Heinemann would be enough to give the Social Cooperation Party a lead, at least until either seat is filled through a by-election.

Nine members of Congress threaten to resign if referendum passes

Evalria Inquirer.svg EVALRIA, 2021-01-16. A joint declaration of opposition to the two-term limit, subject of the referendum due to take place on February 7, has been signed by nine members of Congress – two Senators and seven Representatives, who have denounced the limit as "undemocratic" and "uncharterly". Six Liberal Democrats, two Libertarians and one from the New Kerry Party have signed the declaration.

  • Sen. Richard Heinemann (LDP-JV)
  • Sen. Walt Knudsen (LDP-LN)
  • Rep. Herbert Ford (LDP-JV)
  • Rep. Gwen Jordan (L-KL)
  • Rep. Ioanis Hornata (LDP-KL)

This poll says former Mayor of Jarronburg Edward F. Selmi should easily win in Janval, where the incumbent governor is barred from seeking a second consecutive term. Janval currently uses first-past-the-post voting for local elections – even though that may change in October – which means that the candidate who receives the most votes wins, no matter if an absolute majority is reached.

It's a close tie in Kalúen, between incumbent Andréas Kortin Sau, formerly a Liberal Democrat, and Kamila Iensi, former Mayor of Falșak and 2019 presidential candidate. The lack of an outright majority may be a scary prospect at first, but Kalúen has adopted contingent voting for local elections in 2013, so an outright majority will be at steak, no matter who gets to advance to the second round.

Hellwig on November 16.

Steven Y. Ebner, 42, has served in the People's Assembly from 2009 to 2017, representing the city of Hendricks. A year after his second term ended, he challenged and lost to incumbent Governor Michael O'Toole.

Renatus Lágan "may pass away", says Chief Physician

Hartleyville Reporter.svg GEESEEKULKOO, LN, 2021-01-08. Following the speculation regarding Renatus Lágan's condition, Dr. Frank Conci, Chief Physician of the Geeseekulkoo General Hospital, has issued a statement:

Mr. Renatus Lágan is undergoing treatment, but he is still in critical condition. He is fighting for his life.
We at the Geeseekulkoo General Hospital are doing everything we can to improve his condition, but the damage to his liver and kidneys is too advanced for a full recovery.
Right now, there is a concrete possibility that he may pass away.

Kalșerian politicians condemn US Capitol raid

Times of Kalseri.svg EVALRIA, 2021-01-07. The storming of the US Capitol by Trump supporters has been universally condemned by the major political parties and figures of Kalșeri.

Maksimilianus Ureska: "Impeach Trump now. That man is not suited for any office, and the storming of the Capitol is only one of the many nails in the coffin of his disastrous administration."

Phil Garner: "What happened in Washington is the ugly result of a demagogue who can't handle rejection and refuses to take responsibility for anything."

Simon Harris: "Do not call it a "protest". It's an attempted coup."

Greg Stephanidis: "PATRIOTS MY ASS. #CapitolHill"

Damian Feynman: "Disrupting the democratic process is not freedom. There is no "steal" to stop."

Cassandra Newell: "Once again, Trump has shown us just how dangerous his death cult is."

Matthew Chandler: "I cannot help but feel disappointment and anger for this heinous episode of domestic terrorism."

BREAKING: Renatus Lágan hospitalized

Lágan has been suffering from liver problems since 2013, when he started drinking due to the divorce proceedings with his then-wife Aleksia Olsi, after accusations of domestic violence.

Parents lose legal battle to name child Messiah

Lennoxton Gazette.svg O'LEARY, TK, 2021-01-04. Second loss in court for Russell and Sharon Driscoll of O'Leary, TK: the Lennoxton Provincial Court ruled that Messiah is an "overtly religious" name, and therefore illegal to use under the Naming Protocol of 1996, which Takalim has ratified. Furthermore, the Court expressed concern at the name's "inherent unreasonable expectations of perpetual piety and outstanding behavior".

The couple had made the news for wanting to name the same child Djehriwfjhkdkadhl4444421132 (pronounced "David") as a way to protest the canton's naming laws. If the couple submit another invalid name, the child will be given a name by the Court.

Kaluonic Globe.svg PERCY, KL, 2021-01-04 Governor Andréas Kortin Sau has announced that the Liberal Democrats and the Libertarians will run under a single ticket, putting an end to months of speculation.

"There are some differences in views here and there, but nothing that can't be ironed out", stated KLLP Secretary Jad Whitlow in a Tweet following the announcement.
