What are the Sanctuary Stars?

The Sanctuary Stars is an extended science fiction constructed world spanning various star systems, currently set roughly one and a half to two thousand years beyond the present day. At the moment, the Sanctuary Stars universe consists of the Ecumene, Aidus, and Ametrasa. These quasi-independent settings are related to each other in the origin of human life respective to them, and each has its own flavor and themes. At the moment, there is no plans for these independent human civilizations to have any form of cross contact, due to the difficulties of both interstellar travel and time dilation.

The Sanctuary Stars originally started as merely Aidus, developed entirely by myself, User:Fizzyflapjack, but it has since been expanded to two new sub-opuses, Anunia and Ametrasa. Each of these opuses are intended to have distinctive characteristics, diverging in their technological and historical developments depending on their specific circumstances. All of these projects focus on humans who left the Sol system after Earth faced an indeterminate crisis and was no longer long-term viable for human habitation. The developed nations of Earth constructed massive solar sailing ships to ferry their people to worlds thought more viable than Earth. Europeans and Russians settled in the Aidus system and Japanese and Americans in the Ametrasa system.

Though the word "sanctuary" is often used in a positive context, the settlement of these new worlds did not go entirely according plan for many. The Japanese-American settlers of Ametrasa faced significant hardship after a major robotic uprising left them vulnerable and dwindling in numbers. Only Aidus maintains technology to the level of, and indeed better than, that of present day Earth, but its worlds are tidally locked to their star, their peoples caught in the shrill winds of a perpetual twilight.

This project is constantly evolving and expanding, and I expect that there will eventually be more sanctuaries added as time goes on. While this is primarily a solo work, I am always open to collaboration with others, and I would love to hear your thoughts, comments, or suggestions. Please reach out to me on my user talk page or this portal's talk page if there is anything you'd like to mention. Thank you for your interest, and happy conworlding! ☻
Aidus: A Simple Primer

Humanity in the Aidus system is descended from the very same Humanity that inhabits the planet Earth in the modern day. The "present date" of the Aidus system is difficult to measure in Earth years due to the effect of time dilation. Roughly, the 13th millennium of the Fourth Age is sometime between 1,500 to 2,000 years in the future. Don't let the use of the word "millennium" there fool you either; in the Aidus system, time is measured in "uecs" and not "years." An in-depth, in-character explanation of the calendar system used in Aidus can be found on the page "Orbalian calendar." The gist of it will be explained here, for ease of access to more cursory visitors or readers of the project.

A uec in the Aidus system is only equivalent to 6.09 Earth days. That's a little less than a week. So one "millennium" in terms of uecs is actually only a little over 16 and a half Earth years! Uecs are aligned to the orbit of the middle-most planet Orbalia around the star Aidus. This aligns to the IRL orbital period of TRAPPIST-1e around its star. As Orbalia is tidally locked to Aidus, just as its IRL equivalent is believed to be, there isn't actually any "day" or "night" as a unit of time. Instead, those words are actually used somewhat geographically; to be in "day" is to be in a place on Orbalia where Aidus is always present in the sky. Uecs are still divided up into 24 hour periods, known as sextents, which equal days in length and are arranged like weekdays and weekends as our days on Earth are.

Beside from differences of time, humans in the Aidus system are quite different from their ancestors in numerous other ways as well. In evolutionary terms, 1,500 to 2,000 years is a microscopic drop in the bucket, so there are no significant structural changes to an Aidusian human's physiology. However, due to the conditions of low gravity on most of the inhabited planets, people born and raised on Velesa and Mora are notably taller than their cousins from more Earth-like Orbalia and Chaius. Additionally, advancements in genetic engineering and other biotechnology means that humans have an even greater potential for body modification than we do on Earth; it is not uncommon for people to completely change their appearance every once and while simply because they are tired of looking at the same face everyday!

If I tried to explain all the differences between human society on Earth and in the Aidus system here, then there wouldn't be much point in writing on any other pages. I encourage you to explore the pages associated with this project, see if you find anything interesting, and let me know if there is anything you think worth clarifying or investigating further! I can probably call myself a worldbuilder, but by no means am I a real scientist or rigorous researcher, so there is bound to be errors which I would all to happy to learn about and correct!

Mancia
Matrix Mancialis.svg

The various arts of Mancia constitute the esoteric knowledge of techno-biological practices utilized by a variety of practitioners throughout the Aidus system. Although considered in a great deal of folklore as supernatural in origin, the various forms of mancia are entirely technological in their historical origin. Each of the varieties of the mancial arts are derived from a distinct organization with a specific purpose motivating their particular characteristics.

As of the 13th millennium of the Fourth Age, there are seven widely-known forms of mancia present throughout the system: Nanomancy from the Orbital University, Iludomancy, Ionomancy, Electromancy from the Imperial Iyusi, Cadumancy from the Caduceium, Hedomancy from the Amisi Amortisi, and Loimomancy from the Shernykluv. While all seven of these practices are considered mancial arts, only the first five can be legally practiced within the Aidusian Empire. Additionally, Nanomancy, which predates all other mancial arts, is uniquely practiced within the highly secretive Orbital University, and knowledge of its mechanisms are beyond the comprehension of practitioners of the latter forms, which all share a common origin from the later half of the Second Age...
