The Ministry of Defense (Swedish: Försvarsdepartementet) or MoD is major ministry of the Government of the Nordic Federation. It is responsible for implementing government policies related to national and civil defense and serves as the headquarters of the Nordic Armed Forces.

Governance and Organization

The Ministry of Defense is governed and managed by several committees.

  • The Defense Council, chaired by the Minister of Defense and formed of the Chiefs of Staff and civilian officials, serves to recommend national and civil defense options to the Grand Marshal.
  • Office of the Minister of Defense, led by the Minister of Defense and including a predominantly civilian staff and is the principal staff element of the Ministry of Defense in the exercise of policy development, planning, resource management, fiscal and program evaluation and oversight, and interface and exchange with other government departments, foreign governments, and international organizations, through formal and informal processes.

The Ministry of Defense is comprised of three top level departments, one second level department, two third level departments and a minor ministry. This includes:

Top Level Departments

The Grand Army (Stora Armén) is the land force of the Nordic Armed Forces.

The Federal Naval Service (FNS) is the sea force of the Nordic Armed Forces.

The Nordic Air Force (NAF) is the air force of the Nordic Armed Forces.

Second Level Department

The Home Guard is the gendarmerie of the Nordic Federation, and is split between the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Minor Ministry

The Ministry of Wartime Intelligence is an intelligence agency belonging to the Ministry of Defense.

Third Level Departments

The Unified Reserves is a unified reserve and mobilization system for all departments of the Ministry of Defense.

The Civil Defense Organization is a civil defense and continuation of government agency belonging to the Ministry of Defense.
