The Maya Rojo (Spanish: Mayas Rojos; "Red Maya"), officially the Communist Party of Yucatán (CPY), was a Landonist faction that ruled the Yucatec People's Republic from 1975 to 1982.

History

The Maya Rojo were a radical communist faction that rose to power in Mexico during the mid-20th century. Inspired by Marxist-Landonist ideology, the group aimed to overthrow the existing government and establish a socialist state. The Maya Rojo gained support from marginalized indigenous communities in Mexico and used guerrilla warfare tactics to undermine the government's control over the region.

Once in power, the Maya Rojo implemented a radical and violent social and economic restructuring program, leading to the deaths of tens of thousands of people. The group's policies mainly targeted "colonial" elements, including individuals of mainly European descent, as well as others they deemed too "assimilated". The Maya Rojo's reign of terror continued for several years until they were eventually overthrown by a coalition of Mexican government forces and international allies. Despite their short-lived regime, the Maya Rojo's legacy continues to impact the region, contributing to ethnic and political tension into the present day.

Organization

Role of women

One oft-overlooked fact is the significant role played by women in the Maya Rojo movement. Women were active in all aspects of the revolution, from participating in armed struggle to serving in political leadership roles. The CPY also placed a strong emphasis on gender equality and worked to promote the rights and opportunities of women throughout Yucatán. This focus on women's rights and leadership was highly unusual for the time, and it helped to distinguish the Maya Rojo from other communist movements in Latin America.
