The judiciary of Georgia is headed by the [[Supreme Court of Georgia (Alternatively)|Supreme Court]], which consists of a [[Chief Justice of Georgia (Alternatively|Chief Justice]] and two Assessors, one Chief Assessor and one Deputy Assessor; five judges may be present in some cases. Every court in Georgia has the same composition as the Supreme Court. The judicial system is theoretically held accountable to the Constituent Assembly and the Presidium of the Constituent Assembly when the legislature is not in session. Criminal penalties can be stiff; one of the basic functions of the system is to uphold law and order in Georgia.
