Social Democratic Party (Spanish: Partido Social Democrática) is a center-left to left-wing political party in Central America. It currently served as an opposition party of the government together with the Democratic Alliance, Liberal Progressive Party, and Green Party. The current party leader is the current Alajuela Delegate Federico Alfaro.
It was founded in December 4, 1991 after the merger of the Revolutionary Alliance, United Liberation Party, and Democratic Radical Party. Both parties have failed to have seats in 1987 and 1990 legislative elections because the Nationalist Party and Democratic Alliance dominated the legislation. They want to reform the Conference of American States but opposes on leaving the union. They want to improve the diplomatic relationship to the United Commonwealth, United People's Committees, and other Landonist states but they did not support Landonism. In terms of the country's certain issues, the party supported the same-sex marriage, legalization of marijuana only for medical purposes, gun control and abortion for rape victims.
It belongs to the opposition party during the leadership of the Nationalist Party. Beatriz Santana is the only elected president from this party in Central American history.
