The Continental Revolutionary Guard (CRG) is a branch of the Continental Armed Forces and is the military arm of the Continentalist Party of the United Commonwealth. It was established on August 5, 1940, by the order of Secretariat Seamus Callahan, specifically for the purpose of preserving the United Commonwealth's LandonistContinentalist political system, whereas the regular Continental Army defends the country's borders and maintains national defense. The main role of the Revolutionary Guard is national security, including border security and internal security, and it often works closely with the Comissariat of Internal Affairs.

The Revolutionary Guard is in a sense the spiritual successor of the Continental Revolutionary Army that fought in the Revolutionary War of 1917–21, which originated as the armed wing of the Party but later became the regular Continental Army. The organization was founded in 1940 on the basis of the Red Guards, a type of infantry division of conscripts in the Continental Army that were mobilized during the Great War to fight on the front lines. They were given the name "Red Guard" to appeal to patriotism and the Commonwealth's military tradition. After the war, the idea of a permanent and professional armed wing loyal only to the Party, creating an "army within an army," was implemented by General Secretary Seamus Callahan in 1940. Initially the force consisted of several regular infantry divisions. The organization was further expanded since the 1970s and today the CRG consists of several components: the Ground Force, the largest and primary component; the Naval Force; the Air Force; and the Commando Corps, the Guard's special operations forces. As of 2020 the Revolutionary Guard is estimated to have about 179,000 active personnel in its ground, naval and air forces. Both conventional and guerrilla warfare are the focus of the organization.

Since its creation as an ideologically driven organization, the Revolutionary Guard has been accused of becoming an "army within an army" controlled directly by the Continentalist Party, existing along side the regular military. The addition of the Guard's own naval forces, mainly for patrolling the coastline in the south and north, near the maritime border with Antillean and Manitoban waters, and air forces to provide tactical air support and transportation capability, gives the Guard capabilities comparable to the regular Continental Armed Forces. The CRG also includes the largest special forces unit of the United Commonwealth, the Revolutionary Guard Commando Corps, consisting of about 28,000 personnel that carry out the country's most sensitive and complex operations. The Revolutionary Guard is led by the Commandant of the Guard and the Party Secretary, along with individual branch commanders, and they answer directly to the Secretariat of the United Commonwealth and the Central Committee of the Continentalist Party.

Terminology

The official name of the organization is the Continental Revolutionary Guard (CRG), but they are also referred to in the Anglo-American media simply as Revolutionary Guards or sometimes Continentalist Revolutionary Guards.
