Hon. Nathan Daniel Keegan was the 12th Prime Minister of the United Islands of Georgeland. Keegan served twice as Prime Minister. The first time was between 1948, when he succeeded the retiring Fenton Thomas after having served as Treasurer for several years, and 1950 when his government was defeated at the general election. Keegan served as Leader of the Opposition from 1954 until 1958 when he won the election and again served as Prime Minister. Deeply unpopular for much of his second term due to his sweeping social changes and perceived arrogance, Keegan was defeated at the 1958 election despite several constitutional changes being approved at the same time. Keegan's administration instituted several political reforms, including changing the Presidency from an elected to an appointed position and changing the name of the country from the Republic of Georgeland to the United Islands of Georgeland.
Keegan's assessment as Prime Minister has become more positive in the years since his death. His economic reforms, though unpopular at the time, arguably set the scene for Georgeland's economic boom during the 1960s. At the same time, his reforms to the country's constitution are also considered very important, particularly his changes to the Presidency, which redefined the meaning of the office.
Keegan died March 12, 1964 while still a serving Member of Parliament.
