General elections were held in Hogevoren on 5 and 12 October 1853. It was the first general election in which parties had to announce their candidate for prime minister and pick a running mate before the elections. The election marked the first time the Liberal Party and Conservative Party had faced each other in a general election.
The Liberal Party chose incumbent Prime Minister Rudolph Albach as their candidate for Prime Minister, with Lindert Hoenderken as his running mate. The Conservative Party chose Jan Longepee as their candidate, with Johan Stokvisch as his running mate.
Albach won the election with 59.2% of the vote. This resulted in Albach and the Liberal Party maintaining their majority in the Hogevorian Parliament.
