The legislative election occurred on 20 September 2014 for all 249 seats of the House of the People, the lower house of the National Assembly of Pashtunistan. It was the last election held during the reign of King Ahmad Shah Khan, who announced his intent to abdicate due to his old age the next year. The National Unity Party maintained its plurality, winning 117 seats, followed by the Republican Party of Pashtunistan, which gained seats since the last election, rising to 80 seats.
Accusations of voting irregularities arose after there were significant delays in reporting the election result from multiple districts. In late 2015, an investigation uncovered voter fraud and other problems that occurred in the counting process. Protests occurred in Kabul and the government was criticized by the Republican Party. As a result, Prime Minister Mohammed Emel Khan gave his resignation to King Ahmed Shah Khan and was replaced by Abdul Qadir Baryalai, while more than 100 employees of Pashtunistan's National Election Commission were fired, including its director.
