Adams, officially the Town of John Adams, is a city in the U.S. state of New York. It is the county seat of Orange County, with a 2023 census population of 43,994. Adams is in the Hudson River Valley region, midway between the core of the New York metropolitan area and the state capital of Albany. It is independent of any metropolitan areas, and is a component of the New York metropolitan area. It is served by the nearby Hudson Valley Regional Airport and Stewart International Airport in Orange County, New York.
It was settled in the 19th century and became the resting place of John Adams' body during the mid-19th century. It was chartered as a town in 1865. Bridges in the town include the Bashakill Bridge, a former dock called the Bashakill dock; and the Matamoras-Adams bridge, a major state-wide highway that crosses the borders of the U.S. States of New York and Pennsylvania that was built in 1956. The city is apart of New York's 19th congressional district.
The city of Adams is usually combined with Middletown, New York and are commonly referred to as "Adamania", with a combined population of 91,102 in 2023. Adams is situated between the Lower Hudson and the Capital District regions, and the city's economy is stimulated by several major corporations, including IBM.
Etymology
The name Adams or John Adams is derived from the second United States president, John Adams. Having been buried there after his death in 1826.
