Augustine Rodríguez Calderón (born November 12th, 1965) is a Sierran politician. He currently serves as the interim leader of the Social Unionist Party, a Christian democratic party in Bajaría. He previously served as Mayor of Ures in South Sonora, which was apart of Pacífico Norte at the time. He was previously a member of the National Revitalization Movement.
Born in San Diego, Laguna, Calderón would spend a majority of his childhood growing up in Hermosillo. Calderón would attend and eventually graduate from the University of Sierra, San Diego, receiving a degree in education and theology. After a few years as an instructional assistant, Calderón would begin teaching Christian theology at the University of Guaymas. After a lengthy tenure teaching, Calderón would enter politics in 2018, being elected as Mayor of Ures, a city near Hermosillo, as a member of the National Revitalization Movement's moderate wing. As mayor, Calderón would implement multiple programs directed towards combating the city's rising homeless population. He would also implement economic relief programs for students, specifically students in debt. Calderón would receive high approval ratings until the final months of his first term, in which a funding and voting scandal would result in him electing not to seek a second term. After a year of political absence, Calderón would return to politics in 2021, supporting the 2021 El Norte status referendums and advocating for ascension and confederation. In March of 2021, Calderón would be elected to the leadership position of the newly-created Social Unionist Party, serving as it's interim leader.
Politically, Calderón identifies as a social liberal and a Christian democrat. On social issues, Calderón has typically taken a more liberal stance, which has attracted criticism from his own party. Calderón is personally opposed to abortion, but has pledge to "fight for its legal existence". He is also neutral on the topic of gay marriage and rights in Bajaría, claiming the issue was "already resolved" and "old news". However, Calderón personally supports the continuation of same-sex civil unions and has stated his opposition to gay marriage in past campaigns. On economic issues, Calderón supports limited government intervention in the economy, but does support the continuation of most welfare programs. On foreign policy, Calderón is a supporter of the Conference of American States and has supported American unionism. Calderón is opposed to the normalization of relations with the United Commonwealth, the United People's Committees, and Mexico, but has stated support for "continued peaceful co-existence".
