Aurionea (Aurionean: Aurinoumi, Aurinoumi) is an island nation located in Siduma. It is situated in the northwest Aurionean Sea, and is bordered on the west by the East Siduma Sea, the Ejama Sea to the north and the Lona Sea to the south. Aurionea is an archipelago comprised of 1,141 islands, with the four main islands being Elitima, Koyirä, Saraama and Mäasemeni. Mänsäya is the nation's capital and Söpurü is it's largest city followed by Vizholokkea, Lonamapesa, Sunsi, Shonoteri and Kuasagima.

Aurionea is the 5th most populous country in the world, and is the third most densely populated, with an estimated 2234 population of over 310 million people. Aurionea's population is the 24th most urbanized, which is mostly concentrated on the nation's coasts and rivers. Roughly 93.5% of the nation's population lives within a urbanized area. The Söpurü Metropolitan Region in 2230 was home to roughly 43 million people. 98.6% of the population are indigenous Aurioneans, with the remaining 1.4% being ethnicities from Siduma. Aurionea ranks 9th in highest life expectancy, 3rd lowest in rate of infant mortality and has one of the world's most educated labor force.

Inhabited since 45,000 BEC, Aurionea's calendar centers around the establishment of Aurionea's emperor and imperial system based in Iokmammi, roughly 2234 years ago. Between the 8th and 10th centuries AEC the imperial system was reduced to a ceremonial institution, and Aurionea entered into a long period of warring feudal lords, known as the Sota period (940-1405). In the 15th century political power was centralized again under a military chieftain (kemorurēto). Efforts by the kemorurēto to further consolidate power by taxing the feudal chiefs (jira), plunged the nation into nearly two centuries of civil war known as the Kuolima period (1803-2023). Aurionea returned to its imperial system in 2030, entering into a period of expansionism and imperialism. Establishing a colonial empire, Aurionea became the planet's political and economic hegemony. Introduced to eastern models of democracy through its colonial endeavors, the nation first adopted its first constitution in 2142. After defeating the Concordat during the Third Confrontation, Aurionea entered into a period of decolonization and reverted to an autocratic state during the Interim Global Confrontation. By 2220 the vast majority of its colonial processions had gained their independence.

Aurionea is a constitutional monarchy and a directorial parliamentary democracy with a bicameral legislature, the Imperial Diet. Its current monarch is Emperor Satatieto and current Prime Minister is Kübro Araki. Aurionea is a member of the Commonality of States (COS), International Federation for Cooperation (IFC), Council for Economic Prosperity and Conglomeration (CEPC), Northern Alliance (NA) and the Siduma Union (SU).

Etymology

History

Ancient to classical period

Emperor Atami ( Aatami ), the first monarch of Aurionea.

Archeological studies have shown that Aurionea was first settled by hunter-gatheres, known Askarö people, as the as early as 45,000 BEC during the Upper Paleolithic era, followed by introduction of semi-sedentary hunter-gatherers during the Mesolithic and Neolitic era. The first pottery appeared in 6,000 BEC, and animal husbandry was widespread by 3,300 BCE. Domestic production of bronze weaponry, jewelry and tools started approximately 1,200 BCE. The arrival of Aurionic-speaking people Atami people entered the archipelago by 900 BCE, introducing wheat farming. Intermingling between the Atami and the Askari formed the foundation for the Aurionean people. The Aurorean calendar designates year 0 to distinguish the periods before and after the coronation of the first monarch, Emperor Atami. According to religious tradition, Emperor Atami is the great grandson of the god Aurinko and is the progenitor of roughly 2,234 years of uninterrupted imperial rule.

Religious and cultural traditions from mainland Siduma began entering Aurionea around 248 AEC, particularly Aharonism and Mehdism. Both religions preached exclusive belief and were hostile towards the indigenous Aurionean faith; Hito. In 374 the Aurionean Interfaith War, a religious civil war, broke out between jiras of Aharonism and the indigenous faith. Both Aharonism and Mehdism were officially banned by Emperor Eino in 386, with followers either forced to convert or face execution. In 653 the first criminal and administrative laws was developed, following the system of thought and behavior; Lakiataumi. Several large funeral mounds were constructed in the 7th and 8th centuries, the largest being the 100 feet (30 m) high, 955 feet (291 m) long Imperial Burial Mound located in Keletilinn. The Imperial Burial Mound was just one of the many religious sites constructed during this period, indicating a increase in religious reverence by the government.

Imperial control declined after two claimants to the title of emperor waged war, pitting the royal family against one another in the Luma War (931-940). The vacuum of power led to the ascension of the military chieftain (kemorurēto), who assumed the temporal power of the emperor. Subordinates of the kemorurēto, the feudal chiefs (jira), began to engage in feuds for land which would last for centuries during the Sota period (940-1405).

Middle feudal period

Battle of Söpurü concluded the Ahonen-Enno War in 1405.

The Aomori clan of Saraama introduced the Aomori Stallion to Elitima which revolutionized warfare on the island. Complex military hierarchies were established, with the knight class (sotamiesa) becoming the third most significant caste in Aurionea. Five large families rose in prominence during the early Sota period, the Ahonen, Salo, Imre, Mägi and Enno clan. Brief periods of peace ensured when foreign armies threatened Aurionea and the clans would join in mutual defense of the archipelago. In 1204 the combined forces of Aurionea fought against the two Siduma armies during the Sidumamese Invasion of Aurionea. Both invasions failed, allowing for the rival clans to resume their feuds with one another.

The Ahonen and Enno clans engaged in a brutal conflict in the heart of Aurionea, causing the deaths of tens of thousands. The brutality of the conflict was so noticeable that Emperor Kauko forced the two leaders to a ceasefire. The Imre clan assumed national control in 1401, and was supportive of restoring the emperor's temporal powers. Unrest among the peasantry towards the feudal chiefs and the knights due to high grain taxes, further prompted the return of the emperor to national leadership. The return of imperial power marked the Imre period (1405-1803), a period of relative peace and prosperity. Literature and art flourished under the sponsorship of the Imre chieftains and the emperor. Roads, canals and ports were constructed at an impressive rate during this period, further connecting the nation. The Imre era saw the significant growth in the merchant class, banking, and capital markets. Efforts to formally establish a national currency and ending trade by wheat was met with fierce opposition by the peasantry.

Imre chieftan, Tumo Imre alongside the Emperor Taunoi pushed for national economic reforms in 1799 to redistribute farmland to cultivators and end the feudal tax system. Tumo believed that the feudal chieftains hording of grain was detrimental to national productivity, and in 1802 pushed for the first tax on feudal chiefs. Feudal chiefs in modern day Nükurumo, Neyönonttüun, Kankkokomya and Vöpi revolted against the Imre and Emperor Taunoi in the Grain War; beginning the Kuolima period (1803-2023). The Ahonen sided with the Imre, causing Enno, Salo and Mägi to enter the side of the revolting feudal chiefs. Technological advancements accelerated during the end of the Kuolima period, leading to more sophisticated weaponry that lead to a series of devastating battles in the Elitima and Vöpi regions. Emperor Konkuyu consolidated political power over the archipelago in 2022 by absorbing the Enno into the Imre-Ahonen clique during the reorganization of the Imperial peerage system. The Salo continued fighting in 2022 and 2023 in the Salo Continuation War, but was ultimately put down by the Provisional Imperial Army.

Modern period

The sotamiesa mostly surrendered peacefully to the the new imperial establishment, being incorporated into the Imperial Army or Imperial Navy. The last vestiges of feudalism were eliminated, and agricultural land was either redistributed or controlled by those who actively worked on the land. Emperor Konkuyu formally ended the transit court, and established a permanent court in Mänsäya in 2025. Over the course of roughly half a decade, Konkuyu's court reorganized or organized entire political or economic systems in Aurionea. The legal code was standardized, local and regional courts were organized with fixed boundaries laying the foundation for the prefectures and regions. In 2029 the Chamber of Judges was established, comprised of former feudal lords, and newer aristocratic classes who served as formal representatives of the law in their respective regions or at-large regions. All members of the Chamber of Judges were appointed by the Emperor.

In the early modern period, Aurionea rapidly industrialized. Transition from hand production to machines allowed for an unprecedented rise in population and consumption of mass produced goods. Chemical and iron production allowed for the creation of hardened material necessary to build boilers and other complex equipment. The textile and iron industry in Elitima grew quickly around the city of Söpurü, which had historically served as the hub for grain processing in Aurionea. Growth in the industrial sector in Söpurü, along with its logistical importance caused a need for mass employment, leading to the city overtaking Mänsäya as the largest city in 2035. Coal extraction developed in Vöpi, southern Elitima and Nükurumo. Large coal mining operations provided ample fuel for locomotives, steamboats, steamships and hot blast iron smelting. Canals and railroads were built to connect the industrial centers of Elitima and Vöpi. Smaller regional networks were expanded to connect agricultural regions to the Atami River System. Mäasemeni emerged as competitor to the industrial center of Elitima, the source for the modern political and economic Elitima-Mäasemeni rivalry.

Aurionea's colonial endeavors began in 2030, with the establish of several ports in Siduma, the first being Konkuyekö. In 2037, Aurionea invaded Tengeria and established in 2046 its first significant colony. Aurionea's government promoted settler colonialism in Siduma, and various islands across the world. Important colonies established during the height Aurionean colonialism include Masomanäk, established in 2042, Enmistina in 2053 and Anyönma in 2061. In 2065 Aurionea invaded the state of Mindaibira, igniting the First Confrontation. Nations supporting Mindaibira and who sought to contain Aurionean expansion established the Coalition of Free States (CFS). Coalition armies landed in Enmistina and Anyönma in 2069, and several Sidumanese states invaded the Aurionean occupied Tengeria in 2071. Aurionea retook Enmistina, and began negotiations to end the war. In 2073 negotiations fell apart, and the major powers of the Coalition demanded the unconditional surrender of Aurionea. Eileana joined as a cobelligerent of Aurionea in 2074, seeking to exploit the weakness of Garilura, a major colonial contender of both Eileana and Aurionea. Aurionea and Eileana signed the Treaty of Mendihiria with the Coalition, formally ending the war. Aurionea retained Enmistina and Anyönma, but relinquished control over Masomanäk and Tengeria.

Aurionea's loss in the First Confrontation lead to decline internally, in both economic and societal metrics. Economic recession caused mass unemployment, and cities began to decline in population. Internal trade along with the Atami River System declined by roughly 34%. Production of industrial machinery and agricultural output declined. Emperor Kürö asked for his government to intervene, causing political infighting with the House of Judges. Two factions emerged within the House of Judges, the Liälita and Yekusä. The Liälita opposed Emperor Kürö's efforts to create government relief for the poor working class, and were comprised of mostly the new merchant aristocracy. The Yekusä, who supported Emperor Kürö, were made up by former feudal lords and priests. Liälita maintained control within the government, preventing any government expenditure for poverty relief. Emperor Kürö turned to the coffers of the shrines, and began recruiting the religious orders to facilitate the disbursement of welfare. Aurionea entered into a religious awakening, with religious zeal overtaking the peasantry and urban workforce.

High Priest Kyiota Sanssunu became a prominent leader in the country with the decline of Emperor Kürö's health. An interest for returning to the countryside became widespread among the population, causing many to leave their urban dwellings. Modern historians refer to this era as the Kyiota Revival (2078-2095). Technological innovations slowed during this period and domestic conflict began to become a serious problem by the 2090s. Liälita-aligned, Maso Mommötäu, Chief of Kankkokomya led a coordinated effort to end clerical dominance. Mommötäu's effort culminated in the Shrine Killings in 2095, resulting in the death of Kyiota Sanssunu and his supporters across Aurionea. Emperor Kürö's reign ended in 2097, with his son Emperor Yöküyi taking the throne.

The Yöküyi period (2097-2121) saw a period of economic revival, returning to a period of prosperity not seen since Emperor Konkuyu. Yöküyi ended regional judicial authority, promoting the centralization of the state under the authority of the Emperor. The Imperial Cabinet was established in 2101. The first Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister were also appointed. The Liälita cabinet, supported by various military cliques declared war against Garilura, after negotiations to return Masomanäk and Tengeria to Aurionean colonial rule failed.

Geography

Aurionea is located on the Aurionean archipelago situated in the the northwest Aurionean Sea, bordered to the west by the East Siduma Sea, the Ejama Sea and the Lona Sea. Consisting of 1,141 islands, it is dominated by four major islands; Elitima, Koyirä, Saraama and Mäasemeni. Aurionea has the third-longest coastline in the world, and has the tenth-largest exclusive economic zone in the world.

Most of Aurionea's landscape consists of low hills and plains, with upland and mountainous terrain situated on the two most northern islands of Mäasemeni and Koyirä. Nine out of the ten largest mountains are within the Mäasemeni Range, with Mount Kemolurate being the tallest at 3,776.24 m (12,389 ft 3 in). Other major mountains include Mount Lamas, Mount Vökiryök and Mount Usaldamo. The majority of the tallest mountains in the Mäasemeni Range are volcanic, and are usually activated by major seismic activity. The island of Mäasemeni is one of the most seismically active spots on the planet, lying on the converging plates of the Aurionean and the Siduma Plates. The Usaldamo Hills, located on the border between Vöpi and Paklyönö is the highest elevation on Elitima Island, which is mostly dominated by flat terrain. The Nükurumo Hills, stretching through the provinces of Elitima, Nükurumo and northern Neyönonttüun is a historically important area for mining, abundant with coal, iron ore and other minerals.

Aurionea's largest island, Elitima, is dominated by the Atami River System. The Atami begins at the three point convergence of the West Atami, the Central Atami and the East Atami is the largest drainage basin in the country. The nations second largest river by both volume and width, the Saseto River, converges with the Atami at Söpurü and creates and extensive network of rivers that allow for navigation. Aurionea's first, second and capitol cities lie on the Atami River System. Other major rivers include the Cokuvamo River, creating the border between Kankkokomya and Vöpi and is also the largest source of water for Lake Kaäle, the largest freshwater lake in Aurionea.

In 2230, 86% of the total Aurionean population lived in cities. The nation's largest city, Söpurü, has a population of 11.5 million (2234). Part of the larger Söpurü Metropolitan Region, it is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the world with 43,905,491 people.

Language

Aurionean is the official language of the nation. Aurionean is also the official language in three overseas colonies, and is the co-official language in four overseas colonies. There is roughly 510 million speakers, primarily of whom reside in Aurionea, with the remainder in Enmistina and Anyönma. On the Piemmi and Syen Islands, both overseas departments of Aurionea, have Piemmenese and Syenese as their co-official languages. Modern Aurionean is written exclusively in the Aurionean alphabet. Piemmenese and Syenese both utilize the Aurionean script.

Aurionean Sign Language is the official sign language used in Aurionean and is promoted through the Imperial Commission for the Disable. Aurionean Braille is used in all government buildings and on all printed money, and all official documents must utilize braille to provide instructions on how an individual may contact government officials for assistance. Both the pandemic and recent wars have left roughly 0.9% of the population, mostly veterans, visually impaired or deaf.

Religion

Hitoism has dominated Aurionea throughout the majority of its history, with roughly 96% of the population adhering to the indigenous religion. Engagement with local shrines is relatively high and has increased significantly within the past half century. Participation in religious ceremonies by lay people is incorporated into secular society through festivals and public blessings. Aurionea's constitution enshrines Hito as the state religion and the Emperor as the head of the religious tradition. While Hito is relatively decentralized, the Imperial Association of Aurionean Shrines is the state church which primarily funds the upkeep of religious facilities.

Major religious holidays also coincide with secular holidays including but not limited to; the Emperor's Birthday, Ascension of Aurinko, birth of Emperor Atami, New Years, the Summer Solstice, Winter Solstice, Fall Equinox and Spring Equinox. Prefectures and cantons may have their own holidays that coincide with local religious festivals dedicated to a henki. The constitution previously enshrined full religious freedom but was amended in response to the Imperial Religious Referendum of 2186. Religious diversity was more prevalent prior to 2186, with the majority of former ethnic minorities residing in Aurionea practicing either Aharonism or Mehdism
