The once great city of Azoz, forged by the likes of Thalut and Xarenvarus, has fallen into disarray, and the Derigi Empire struggles to sustain itself. Centuries ago the proud Azozian people pushed the boundaries of the known world, carving an empire that stretched from the sands of Edom to the Pillars of Ioxemander, but by the twelfth century their luck had begun to run out. It is said that the ancient king Chatnaguri once asked a wiseman, "will my empire rule millions?", to which the wiseman replied, "yes, for a ruin has at least that many grains of sand." As her armies withdrew through the deserts from which they came, the city of Azoz wondered if such a prophecy had finally come true. First there were the Yannians, the ancient enemies of Azoz since time immemorial. When Azoz got its wish of the fall of the Yannis Empire, it could not have imagined the hailstorm of refugees that would flood its gates in reply. The city of Neum on the eastern coast was the first to fall, as Yannian peoples took Azoz by storm. Although Azoz was bruised, it refused to allow its empire to roam free, all the while restless Edom seemingly always pleaded to be finally let go.
It was during the greatest civil war that Azoz had yet seen, between the matriarchs of Edom and the Yannian suzerains of the Ashe River, that a new threat emerged. Deep in the south was a mysterious land yet untouched by the Azozians, where the people spoke of a ruthless, unfeeling monster known only as The Reckoner. His army had no caring for human life, only for the cold worship of the mechanical, mathematical, and chaotic chance. Through dice rolls and coin flips, his army marched across the border of the empire, destroying whoever pulled the unlucky, short straw. In the west the provinces of Garania broke with Azoz, as the last of the empire's soldiers fled. The city of Azoz itself has fallen countless times, leaving behind a city of ruins and graves. And to the east lay the growing Syresian Republic, eager to cannibalize the remains of the Derigi as their empire crumbled. All the while, the northern fringes of the nation were left to fend for themselves, with many fleeing south for the relative safety of the immense Castilean Wall. Further beyond that, lie Azozian provinces seemingly abandoned and left to the mercy of their neighbors. And to the far north sat the land of the Khin, a mighty nomadic people unified by the late Crimson King...
