The Cursed Sea (Lotharic: 𐌵𐌿𐍂𐍃𐌴𐌳 𐍃𐌴𐌰) is the largest body of water south of the Bleak-Wind Mountains. In winter, navigation on the Cursed Sea is impeded by ice floes. Ice floes form due to the large amount of freshwater from the Thorn River, White River, Dread River and the Western River, lowering the salinity of upper levels, often raising the freezing point of the sea surface and carrying oxygen and nutrients, supporting abundant sea life. The distribution and thickness of ice floes depends on many factors: the location, the time of year, water currents, and the sea temperatures. Cold air from the Bleak-Wind Mountains forms sea ice in the northern Cursed Sea, along the Shores of Plenty and the Golden Coast.
The name of the Cursed Sea is left to speculation, but many believe that it mostly due to its harsh nature. The Cursed Sea is known for violent waves, fog, drifting icebergs and dotted erosional remnants of a shield volcanoes. This has made sea travel dangerous except near the coast, where the waters are much calmer.
