Edgar Swain (born 29 July 1968) is a retired Manitoban judoka who represented Manitoba at the 1992, 1996, and 2000 Summer Olympics, winning a bronze medal in 1992. He was also a medalist at the Pan American Games, the World Championships, and the Pan American Championships.

Early life

Swain was born in 1968 in Fort Saskatchewan, Manitoba. He began training in judo from a young age in Fort-des-Priaries and one of his teachers was the "father of Manitoban judo," Kazuo Shirai.

Career

He had success at his first senior level international competition in 1987 at the Pan American Games in Phoenix, Sierra, winning a bronze medal. After placing second at the 1991 Pan American Championships, from 1992 to 1998 he remained the consecutive Pan American champion in his weight division. On the world level Swain was less successful, winning a silver medal in 1993 in Kobe and a bronze medal in Paris in 1999.

Swain won a bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics. He also competed at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2000 Summer Olympics without winning a medal. He retired from judo competition in 2000.

Retirement

Since 2001 he has been one of the trainers of the Manitoban national judo team, and has also served on the training staff in Superior, Quebec, and the Maritime Republic over the years. He works at a judo training center in Fort-des-Prairies.

Achievements

In 1995 he was the Manitoban Athlete of the Year and was the flagbearer for Manitoba at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Olympics.
