The Eirik Raude Class is a class of Skandinavia nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) in service with the Kongelige Strategiskestyrker (Royal Strategic Forces). The class was introduced in 1996 to replace the former Odin Class SSBN and includes four boats. They were built between 1989 and 1999 at Malmö by Kockums Naval Solutions, which is now named Saab Kockums. All four boats are based at Haakonsvern Naval Base.

The four ships of the class, along with the ICBM mobile launchers are today the only launch pads for Kalmar Union's strategic nuclear weapons. The doctrine for nuclear deterrence proposes that there are always two submarines in active patrol service.

Power generation & propulsion

The Eiri Raude Class submarine’s main nuclear powered propulsion system is based on the second-generation ASEA PWR2M, which was developed specifically for the Eiri Raude Class. Current generations of PWR allow submarines to circumnavigate the world about 20 times, whereas the latest development of PWR would allow circumnavigation 40 times without refuelling.

The other main items of machinery are two ASEA geared steam turbines, and a single shaft with a NAtech Marine Pump-jet propulsor. There are two SCANIA diesel alternators, and two turbo generators from ASEA. The propulsion system provides a maximum submerged speed over 25kt.

Electronic systems

One of the main design premises was the need to mount Skandinavian made electronic systems in order to full integration with other Forsvaret systems and satellite net.
