Evalria Citizens Football Club is a Kalșerian professional association football club based in the Evalrian borough of Tașarél that competes in the Kalșerian Premier League. The club was a founding member of the Evalrian Association Football League in 1897, and of the First League in 1956; since then, Evalria Citizens have competed in every season of the top tier of Kalșerian football since its inception in 1956, a feat shared with Internacional Las Encinas F.C. and Olympia Takalim S.U., and rank first in the League's all-time points rankings. The club has won 15 First/Premier League titles, 11 Sun Trophies and 9 KAFF/Enrico Scioni Shields.
Founded in 1891, Evalria Citizens established themselves as the leading club of Evalria. After a lull in the 1950s, the club won six First League titles between 1964 and 1973, followed by another title drought in the 1980s and 1990s, broken by the victory of the 1996 Sun Trophy. The club's most recent trophy was the 2023 Kalșerian Premier League season.
The club's supporters are known as "Citizens", "Red-Golds" or "ECs". Evalria Citizens' main rivals are Tașarél Cavaliers F.C., with whom the club shares its stadium, Jucunditas, and Olympia Takalim, with whom they play the Kalassico. Evalria Citizens have used Hayworth Stadium, also known as Allianz Stadium, as their home field since 1949. The club's home colors are red with a golden cross, reflecting the flag of Evalria.
Evalria Citizens B functions as the club's reserve team, and plays in the Kalșerian Development League. Evalria Citizens also field Evalria Citizens Women, who play in the Kalșerian Women's Premier League.
History
Evalria Citizens F.C. was founded in 1891 as Tașarelton Aton-Cecilia-Sarserimeneri, sometimes rendered in English as "St. Cecilia Gymnastic Club of Tașarél", by members of the congregation of the Kalhan-language church of St. Cecilia, as a means to engage in social activities on Sunday afternoons. Its initial colors were blue and white.
Aton Cecilia was a founding member of the Evalrian Association Football League in 1897, and of the National Church Sports Club Association a year later. The name Evalria Citizens was adopted in 1900, after Aton Cecilia merged with St. Mark's Football Club and the Evalrian Friday Recreational Club, and the club moved from St. Cecilia Road Stadium to the newly-built Hausmann Field. The red shirt with the gold cross, which reflects the shield of Evalria, was adopted as the away kit, before being made the home kit from the 1911 season onwards.
After a period of sustained success between the 1900s and the 1920s, the club entered a period of economic difficulty, caused by the increasing cost of maintenance of existing structures, the Great Depression, the internal instability brought on by the death of Raeburn Scholes, who had served as President of the club since 1900, and the temporary suspension of tournaments due to the Kalșerian invasion of Cape Sundervale in 1933. In an effort to end the crisis, James G. W. Stanford, owner of Stanford Department Stores, was elected President. In 1949, Evalria Citizens left Hausmann Field and built the 50,000-seater Archibald Hayworth Stadium, the construction of which was partially funded by the City of Evalria.
In 1955, Evalria Citizens were invited to join the inaugural season of the Kalșerian First League; by then, the club had won 31 of the 60 editions of the Evalrian Association Football League. On May 16, 1956, club president James Stanford died, and his son George W. Stanford II was unanimously elected President. Evalria Citizens' first season in the national top flight concluded with a sixth place, below expectations of fans; this and subsequent events, most infamously a 7-0 defeat at home to Jucunditas, induced the Supporters' Association to remove Stanford II from the post of President of the club, after a recall vote on October 9, 1959, which caused internal conflicts between supporters of Stanford II and detractors. After the removal, Stanford II would found Chalmersville City F.C. in 1962.
Evalria Citizens have since lived alternating fortunes: the 1967 domestic quadruple (First League, Sun Trophy, KAFF Shield and Professional Cup) was followed by a period of scarcity of titles that lasted from the 1980s to the late 1990s, followed by another quadruple in 1999.
Since the election of Oliver Quinn as President of the club in 2013, Evalria Citizens have expanded their reach in other categories of association football by establishing the B team on the same year, followed by the women's team in 2015, the latter of which joined the Kalșerian Women's Premier League.
Crest and colors
The crest, introduced in 1911, consists of a shield bearing the flag of Evalria, a golden cross on a red background, on the left, and a blue field with two white lines, representing the Sayoo and Gannimel rivers, on the right. While the two fields have been present in each, the crest has seen several restylings, the most recent of which in 1985.
The golden star was added to the crest in 2013, following Evalria Citizens' victory in the 2012 Premier League season.
Aton Cecilia's first kit consisted of a green shirt and white shorts. Because a club playing in the Evalrian Association Football League already donned a green shirt, Aton Cecilia's shirt was changed to a white shirt with blue quadrants in 1898. In 1911, in the same year the crest made its debut, the club adopted the red shirt with the golden cross as its home kit for the first time, and the quartered blue-white kit was changed to blue with white stripes.
Stadium
The first playing ground used by Aton Cecilia was a field situated next to St. Cecilia church, which was given some temporary wooden structures in 1897. Scheduling issues between the church and the Evalrian Association Football League pushed the newly-formed Evalria Citizens to build Hausmann Field, which featured permanent grandstands amounting to 5,000 seats and other facilities, such as a pub and toilets.
The increased popularity of association football brought a need to expand the capacity of Hausmann Field. Several projects were proposed, but all of them were scrapped when the City of Evalria announced that it would be funding a new stadium that could seat 20,000 people, in a measure to relieve the National Olympic Stadium. Contractual disputes with the owners of Hausmann Field also contributed to Evalria Citizens moving to what would become the Archibald Hayworth Stadium, which would open in 1949. Hayworth Stadium has since served as Evalria Citizens' stadium. Following a naming rights agreement between Evalria Citizens and Allianz, Hayworth Stadium has been given the alternative name Allianz Stadium since 2007. The Allianz name is used for matches featuring Evalria Citizens; in all other cases, Evalrian law mandates the usage of the name "Archibald Hayworth Stadium".
The club moved to the National Olympic Stadium for the 2002 and 2003 seasons, as Hayworth Stadium was closed for renovations. Hayworth Stadium opened again in 2004, with an expanded capacity of 45,623 seats.
Training facilities
The EC91 Complex, opened in 2007 and situated in Bourbon County, Lág, is the training facility for the senior team, the reserve team and the women's team. The complex also hosts Bobby Hauser Stadium, a 5,000-seater stadium used by Evalria Citizens B for official matches.
Supporters
Due to a lack of an obvious link between the club and a social group, Evalria Citizens draws supporters from all over the country and from different income groups. 'Tis My Love, a popular fan chant, is sung to the tune of Blaenwern, reflecting the historical links with the church.
Ultras groups occupy the North Curve of the Allianz Stadium. Major ultras groups include Crux, whose members adhere to the Church of Kalșeri; the Ninety-Oners; the Northerners; and the Kalhan-language E-C-Komando. Major displays of fan choreography are usually reserved to high-brow matches, such as derbies and continental competitions, and often feature banners. Unlike other clubs, Evalria Citizens fans rarely make use of fireworks.
Club twinnings and rivalries
The Evalria Citizens Supporters' Association currently recognizes two formal twinnings, Southampton F.C. and Everton F.C., due to their common origins as clubs founded by members of a local church. Supporters of the club are in good terms with Percy Union, due to their status as the "gentlemen's club" of Percy and a common rivalry with Olympia Takalim.
Evalria Citizens are rivals with Tașarél Cavaliers F.C., against which the supporters of Evalria Citizens leverage accusations of inauthenticity, and because of political differences of the supporters of each club. The club has a bitter rivalry with Jucunditas as well, over the difference of the social classes that supported the clubs - Jucunditas were linked to the working class, and Evalria Citizens fans tended to be wealthy – and for the historical competitiveness of the Evalria Citizens–Jucunditas derby.
Outside of Evalria, the club is rivals with Olympia Takalim, as the two clubs are the most decorated in Kalșerian association football, and Lennoxton Eagles F.C., over political differences – Evalria Citizens fans are not as politically engaged as Lennoxton Eagles fans, who tend to support Rovuanist groups and other right-wing organizations. Supporters are also on bad terms with fans of Gymnasium Percy 1958, due to their positive relationship with Percy Union, and Chalmersville City F.C.
Spats with fans of Liverpool F.C. and Portsmouth F.C. have been documented, due to Evalria Citizens' positive relationship with Everton and Southampton respectively.
