The Federation of the Galactic Republic (abbreviated as FGR and commonly referred to as the Federation) also known as the Galctic Republic or simply as the Republic, is a interstellar nation then evolved to an intergalactic nation primarily located in the Milky Way galaxy established in 2156 by the people of Earth following reconstruction after the Termind War. It is composed of 154 member states, colonies, protectorates, and other planetary governments unified under the goals of universal liberty, justice, equality, trade, exploration, scientific advancement, peace, and mutual protection, with the purpose of furthering the universal rights of all sentient life. Federation members exchange knowledge and resources to facilitate peaceful cooperation, scientific development, space exploration, and mutual defense.
The Galactic Republic is a representative democracy, composed of various star systems, sectors and member worlds throughout most of the known galaxy. Its central government consisted of three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. The first was the Galactic Congress, a bicameral body of elected representatives (the Galactic Senate) and appointed Councillors (Galactic Council). Its main duties included mediating disputes over issues ranging from planetary to galactic-scale, regulating trade routes between star systems, and in theory, represented the interests of Republic citizens. The Office of the Galactic President is the Congress's executive counterpart. The President is elected from the ranks of the Senate by its members. As the leader of the Senate and the overall representative of the Federation, the President also held the titles Head of State and First Senator. The judicial branch consisted of the Supreme Court and the lower Regional Courts. The Supreme Court was composed of twelve justices, one of whom held the leadership position of Chief Justice.
Federation culture, values, and technology had vast influence; across space and time, as well as other dimensions and subspace domains. Encountering numerous clashing ideologies, some conflicts escalated into significant resistance, such as armed conflict, and even temporal incursions intended to prevent key historical events from occurring.
History
In 2055, Earth's natural resources were nearly depleted which led to the planet's nations fighting over these scarce resources. The arrival of the Terminds and subsequent attempted slaughter devastated the geopolitical power structure of humanity. The conflict saw the widespread use of nuclear weaponry. Initially, nuclear exchanges were limited to strategic release of nuclear weapons, but as the war progressed it soon escalated to targeting major civilian population centers. The Termind war ended in 2062 and rendered much of Earth uninhabitable.
During the seven year conflict, a coalition of American-European Federation military units adopted an ad-hoc style of governance, replacing crumbling civilian leadership and implementing a series of emergency measures. The success of this method, combined with European victories against the Terminds, enabled the rapid expansion of the Coalition.
By the end of the war in 2062, the now firmly international Coalition had emerged as the dominant power, and recognized as the world's single, provisional government. Its initial duties included preventing the collapse of human society, restoring agriculture and manufacturing industries, and putting to work hundreds of millions of unemployed citizens.
After a fifty-year period of intense rationing and brutal conditions worldwide, the Provisional Government had managed to reverse the worst of the damage caused by the Termind War, although only at the cost of tens of millions more lives.
Establishment of the UCN
With the restoration of global communications, manned spaceflights, and the ability for more complex governmental structures, a worldwide referendum was held to decide the future of the world government.
Realizing Earth's diminished resources would be unable to support humanity, the world's governments and powerful corporations formed the United Colonial Nations to initiate space colonization in order to secure new natural resources beyond Earth and supporting humanity's survival.
