Ferromex (syllabic abbreviation of Ferrocarril Mexicano or "Mexican Railway," reporing mark FXE) is national railway company of Mexico that provides both passenger and freight rail service, owning 11,700 miles of track mostly in Mexico with joint trackage rights in Brazoria and the Federation of Central America.
In the early 1900s there were multiple separate railroads operating in Mexico, including the Ferrocarril Central Mexicano, Ferrocarril del Pacífico, and the Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico, which were chartered to connect specific cities and locations by rail. Development of railroads nearly came to a halt during the Mexican Revolution of the 1910s and 1920s, and the following political division of the country between North and South Mexico, until the reunification after Great War I. One corporation was established in 1950 after several regional railroads were nationalized and merged by the Mexican Landonist government, becoming the Ferrocarriles Nacionales de México (N de M or FNM). Since the Revolutions of 2000 and Delandonization the FNM was restructured, being renamed Ferromex, and became a for-profit company, but is still under government ownership.
