The Great Nuclear War began on March 26th 2022 after tensions between newly elected President Elizabeth Warren and Russian President Vladimir Putin over alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election and the Russian invasion of Eastern Ukraine earlier that month reached a boiling point. American early warning satellites (in what was widely believed by historians to be a computer glitch) detected hundreds of inbound Russian missiles and Warren gave the order to launch. The exchange of weapons lasted only a couple of hours but the war took it's toll nonetheless. 75% of the American population died in the 12 months after the exchange and millions more would emigrate in the coming decades. Europe was rendered into a radioactive desert with satellite images showing only Switzerland, Iceland, Northern Scandinavia and the Balkans holding any sign of life. China, India and much of Asia sustained considerable losses with cities such as Mumbai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Karachi and Tokyo going up in flames. Australia sustained hits on Sydney, Melbourne, Darwin, Perth, Brisbane and Cairns while Africa and South America received little, if any, direct damage.
