Hilscar (also rendered Hilskar, Hiskar, and Filscar) is the name of a giant crab with a recurring role in Breto-Nordic folklore.

Name and origins

The creature's name comes from Old Bretic fils-Scar, meaning "son of Skar". Many scholars believe the choice of name to be illustrative rather than literal, as Breton audiences of the time would have already been familiar with the tale of Skar, and would thus understand fils-Scar as a creature of the same species. Regardless, he is presented as the actual offspring of Skar in later sources.

In the early Edwardian romances, Hilscar emerges from the ground or from the sea at an indeterminate place in northern High Rock. Subsequent tales place his birth in Himmereth (Morrowind); they explain how he arrived in High Rock after a lengthy trek across Skyrim. Certain Nordic traditions add that his mother was Kraka, the "empress of the sea", who was wed to Skar, the ruler of the land.
