Hurricane Landon was the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded, far exceeding the record set by Typhoon Tip in 1979. The thirty-ninth named storm, twenty-fourth hurricane, and record fifth Category 5 hurricane of the extremely active 2059 Atlantic hurricane season, Landon reached an incredible intensity on September 17, sustaining winds of 280 miles per hour (455 km/h; gusts reaching up to 350+ mph) and a pressure bottoming out at 804 millibars - the lowest ever recorded anywhere on Earth. At its maximum strength, Landon also grew to almost 1,000 miles in diameter, making it one of the largest tropical cyclones ever as well.
