Immortalia is an Everetti conspiracy thriller, action and supernatural horror television series, created by Jack Alderney and Amanda Taylor. It has expanded into a franchise of multiple television series and theatrically released films, comic books and a video game. The series features a sizeable and growing ensemble cast, starring Christine Fletcher as the main protagonist, Isabelle Tours, or known otherwise as superheroine figure, Immortalia, and her team of friends and associates. The series revolves around Immortalia and her team working to undermine and defeat a global conspiracy of political figures, known as the Illuminati, who collude with the Devil and his demons, who seek to not only take over the world to establish a new order they control, but to develop an effort to effectively wage the Biblical war of Armageddon. The cast also spends time hunting various supernatural entities and creatures, or engaging various human criminal organizations and terrorists, helping rescue and save various people around the world.

Christine Fletcher portrays the lead protagonist and focus of the series, however several other prominent characters appear in the series, in nearly each episode. The original three cast includes Jordan Walker, who portrays Marcus Williams, a former Illuminati special forces operator, and David Hewlett, who portrays Dr. Kevin Bennett, a close personal friend of Immortalia. The other cast members joined the show later, or were promoted to series regulars, DJ Qualls, Kenan Thompson, Randy Orton, Kennedy Chase, Sarah McKnight and Aika Katō. Immortalia was originally produced at Fox Studios in Los Angeles, California, in the United States, but has since moved to Immortalis Entertainment Studios in Everett City, New York. Most filming took place in and around Los Angeles, Las Vegas and New York and at the studios themselves, but also notably filmed in Hawaii, Yucatan and in Washington, Maryland. The series was adapted from screenplays and concepts written by Executive Producer and Director Jack Alderney, and showrunner Amanda Taylor.

The series premiered on October 11, 2017. It exclusively broadcast on FX Network until 2019, when the show was sold to Paramount during the Fox-Disney merger deal. The show has since aired on Paramount Network. It is presently developing its sixth season, which is scheduled to air in October of 2022. The show has consistently ranked highly among 18 to 49 year old viewers, and is among the top TV shows on cable television in the Union of Everett and the United States. The series has been overall positively received by critics. It has been nominated for and won several awards, including Primetime Emmy Awards, the People's Choice Awards and the MTV Movie & TV Awards. It has been critically acclaimed for its stunt work and action sequences.

Paramount has expanded the series into a larger franchise, including two spin-off shows, Redacted and Vegas Heat. Redacted's first season premiered in May of 2021 and Vegas Heat is scheduled to premier in October of 2022. It has had two theatrically released films to date, Immortalis and sequel Immortalis: Darkness Conspires, which chronologically take place between season 2 and season 3, and season 3 and season 4 respectively. A trilogy of additional films is planned to release in theaters in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The series has also been adapted into a comic book series, focusing heavily on Immortalia's past, and a video game in is development, scheduled for release in 2025.

Premise

Immortalia revolves around the protagonist, an ancient immortal woman named Isabelle Tours, born in 8th century France, who has become embroiled in a 1,000-year-long conflict with a dark, underground occult movement that later evolves into the modern Illuminati. The Illuminati colludes with Satan the Devil and his demons in efforts to subvert and take over the world, slowly gaining influence over every facet of society throughout the 20th century, bent on a new global order with the Illuminati at the helm. Satan also seeks to develop a way to survive the coming Biblical war of Armageddon, using Illuminati scientific knowhow to develop hybrid technologies to fight in the coming war. Isabelle's immortality being key to this scheme makes her a target for Satan and the Illuminati. Taking place in the present day, Isabelle, and her friends and associates work together to resist the Illuminati and destroy them, while also investigating the paranormal, hunting monsters and demons, hoping to eradicate them. In addition, Isabelle and her associates occasionally take up other fights, targeting organized crime and terrorist groups. In her normal day-to-day life, Isabelle attempts to maintain a "normal" career as a medical doctor.

Isabelle Tours, known as Immortalia or Immy, has unique "superhero-esqe" powers and abilities, primarily immortality, or the inability to die. She may be seriously wounded, or even "killed", but this is only temporary, as her enhanced ability to regenerate recovers her wounds and revives her. These particular powers interest the Illuminati, who seek to use them for their own nefarious purposes, and Satan, seeking to use them to create an indestructible army of human/demon hybrids.

Production

Development

Amanda Taylor began writing Immortalia as a series of short stories in 2013. Much of Immortalia is inspired by shows such as The X Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with some inspiration from the A-Team, MacGyver and Jackie Chan. As it developed, her cousin, movie director Jack Alderney, proposed to pitch the idea to a company for development into a television series, movie, video game or some other form of media. After a few failed attempts pitching the idea to different companies in 2015, Fox Studios picked up Immortalia and proposed development of a television series in 2016. Alderney and Taylor envisioned a series comparable to The X Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Fox green-lit the project with Alderney to direct and as an executive producer, and Taylor as showrunner and a writer. A pilot was ordered in February of 2017 and it performed well. Fox authorized a full season of 20 episodes to be produced starting in May. Performing well to audiences upon airing in October and November, Fox green-lit a second season in December.

Writing

The show tends to follow an episode-to-episode format, each episode focused on a particular new event or antagonist, colloquially referred to as "monster-of-the-week" or "bad-guy-of-the-week", and an overarching main plot that is depicted throughout the course of several seasons. The Illuminati story arc encompasses events across five seasons before coming to a close. Additional subplots involving Isabelle and Dr. Kevin Bennett's work as doctors create a medical drama genre from time to time, and "flashback episodes" are also common, depicting an event, bad guy or monster-of-the-week taking place at some point in Isabelle's past. Most of the writing provides a serious, conspiracy thriller vibe, with aspects of supernatural and creature-feature horror also being common. Many episodes tend to follow a police-procedural/investigation pattern. Light-hearted and comical aspects become increasingly common into season two and three with the introduction of characters portrayed by DJ Qualls and Kenan Thompson.

Casting

Immortalia started with a small cast in its first season, with Christine Fletcher, Jordan Walker and David Hewlett starring as a main "original three". The show has grown a sizeable ensemble cast, featuring both protagonists and villains in major and recurring roles. Both Alderney and Taylor wanted an actress who had experience in martial arts, due the show's dependence on frequent fight scenes and stunts. Fletcher was chosen for the role as a result of her martial arts talent. Jordan Walker, also having extensive experience in boxing and MMA, won him the role of Marcus Williams. Cast members are told ahead of time if they have been written off the show. Only one protagonist has been killed off, the wife of character Kevin Bennett, Jacklyn Bennett, and multiple villains have been killed off. Due to time-jumps that take place during and between seasons, the character Amanda Bennett has been portrayed by three different actresses and character Sakura Saitō has been portrayed by two different actresses. Casting salaries tend to range from $80,000 to $300,000 per episode. Christine Fletcher, who stars as Isabelle Tours, received $350,000 per episode for season five.

Music

The main theme was composed by Two Steps From Hell, a California-based company that usually produces music for movie trailers. Music for the show was composed by David Stein until season three. Since, Hans Zimmer has worked on the project to produce music for the series. The main theme features a mix of instrumental and orchestral, heavy violin and stringed instruments with a blend of hard rock guitar and drums. Initial debate over the main theme had Alderney considering whether the theme should be an actual rock song or an instrumental score. The decision was made the opening theme would be a mixture of the two, but without vocals. Music is used throughout the show to set the tone and mood of events as they occur. Most episodes will also feature a rock or metal song at some point. Artists music including Through Fire, Five Finger Death Punch, Defences and Skillet have been featured in the show. Hans Zimmer and Two Steps From Hell worked together to produce the music and the score in both movies.

Filming

Filming initially took place at Fox Studios in Los Angeles, California, and on-location in and around both Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Jack Alderney's new movie studio, Immortalis Entertainment Studios, when completed construction in 2019, shifted operations to Everett City, where production now takes place. The cast and crew still spend approximately one month per season filming in and around Las Vegas, Nevada, but most filming takes place within the Union of Everett, either in and around Everett City, New York City and Washington, Maryland. Most of the crew also moved to the Union of Everett, though the change in location caused the loss of approximately a quarter of the production crew. Filming involves a mix of conventional camera methods and the use of drones, especially when capturing some of the elaborate action sequences depicted in the show. Car chase and martial arts fight scenes can involve chase vehicles and multiple cameras. Alderney was adamant that fight scenes avoid the chaotic 60-cuts-in-60-seconds style of modern Hollywood, seeking a smooth, full sequence of choreographed combat. Actress Christine Fletcher, being a martial artist herself, preferred the idea as well, earning the show critical acclaim for how its fight scenes are filmed.

Broadcast & Release

Scenes from the pilot episode, named Genesis, were screened at San Diego Comic-Con in the United States in July 2017, and the full episode was first aired to audiences at New York Comic Con in the Union of Everett in October. The first episode aired on the TV channel FX on October 12, 2017 in the Union of Everett and the United States and aired the following week globally. The series currently airs on Paramount Network in the Union of Everett and the United States, and on Paramount Global channels in 115 countries in 29 languages. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, filming delays forced its fourth season to air in May 2021 instead of October 2020. Its fifth season aired on October 13, 2021 and its sixth season is scheduled to air on October 12, 2022. Its 100th episode aired on December 22, 2021, with the series achieving syndication.

Future

After its sixth season, the series will take a break to produce the Armageddon trilogy, three movies which continue the story and feature a new story arc involving the Biblical apocalypse, Armageddon. Series regulars will simultaneously shift to the spin off series Redacted and Vegas Heat in the meantime, whose events coincide with the movie trilogy. With the release of the third and final movie in summer of 2025, Immortalia is slated to continue with its seventh season in October of that year. Executive Producer and Director Jack Alderney states Immortalia likely will last for at least ten seasons, and an additional spin-off is likely at that time.

Franchise & Spin-offs

Immortalis

In October of 2018, debate was had over whether to create a two-part special or a movie to depict the destruction of the Illuminati organization. Alderney wanted a movie, however Fox was unsure if an Immortalia movie would perform well so soon into the television series. Alderney was green-lit for a movie in November, that would take place between season two and season three of the show. It's timing for a theatrical release was heavily debated, due to the need for it to release in the summer of 2019, prior to the airing of season three. Fox initially agreed to a direct-to-streaming platform, however Alderney managed to produce Immortalis in time, using a mix of television production and film production methods. Fox sped the film through approval for a theatrical release in July of 2019.

Immortalis continues the story from season two, depicting the destruction of the main Illuminati organization. It was well received by audiences, earning nearly $800 million at the global box office, however critics stated it could have simply been a "hyper-violent shoot-em-up television special". Writer and showrunner Amanda Taylor retorted that critics opinions don't matter and that she only cares for the common viewers' opinion.

Immortalis: Darkness Conspires

Following the shift of Immortalia to Paramount, and with the success of the first movie, the sequel Immortalis: Darkness Conspires was immediately green-lit by Paramount and slated for a theatrical release in July of 2020. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, production of both the television series and the sequel were delayed. Immortalis: Darkness Conspires performed well according to audiences and critics alike, however it only earned $175 million at the global box office as a result of the pandemic's disruptions of theater operations.

Immortalis: Darkness Conspires continues the story from season three, depicting the schemes of the demon Samael to create a functional unkillable demon/human hybrid super-soldier. The Hybrid is used as a weapon to hunt and capture Isabelle, so further experimentation can continue on her DNA. Samael is killed in a nuclear detonation, after the Hybrid goes rogue, and Isabelle escapes capture. Unsure if she could survive a nuclear bomb, she and the Hybrid are both vaporized in the explosion, however, in season four, the two both regenerate and revive.

Armageddon Trilogy

Immortalia has been planned ahead of time at least a full ten seasons according to co-creator Jack Alderney. At some point in the story, the Biblical war of Armageddon takes place. Alderney sought to originally create two seasons depicting these events, however with the Vegas Heat and Redacted spin-offs, a trilogy of films was planned. The trilogy was green-lit by Paramount and slated to release in theaters in succession in July of 2023, 2024 and 2025 respectively. The first of the three, Immortalis: Revelations is scheduled to bein filming in the late summer of 2022.

The Armageddon Trilogy continues the story, two years after the events of season five. It focuses on a new overarching story arc, also depicted in seasons one and two of Vegas Heat and season 3 of Redacted. Satan the Devil, now operating without the assistance of the Illuminati, focuses his attention on Isabelle and crew, bracing for the now inevitable Biblical war of Armageddon, in which God and his angels come to Earth to exterminate Satan, the demons and wickedness. However, Isabelle negotiates with God to abort the end of the world if she can kill Satan herself, as she does not agree with God in how He plans to carry out His plans. Believing God thinks He might not even be able to kill Isabelle, she is allowed to make the effort herself to defeat Satan. Satan is over course killed in the third installment of the trilogy, Immortalis: Angel of Vengeance, leading to the events of the coming video game slated for release in 2025.

Redacted

Redacted is a spin-off of Immortalia, focusing more on character Marcus Williams. It was written by Jack Alderney and Benjamin Scott, with more of a focus on the conspiracy thriller aspect of the series. Season one was green-lit by Paramount in 2020, focusing on the events leading up to Marcus joining the Illuminati special forces unit that investigates and hunts Isabelle, taking place prior to the events of the show Immortalia. Marcus encounters Isabelle after a large battle leaves much of his team killed in action, and he begins to question his loyalties. Marcus eventually becomes a double agent within the Illuminati, but works with Isabelle to subvert and destroy it. Its second season takes place between season one and season two of Immortalia, continuing parts of the story, his need to fake his death to prevent being exposed as a double agent, and introduces more story to flesh-out the Illuminati organization. The third season, slated for release in May of 2023, takes place alongside the Armageddon trilogy, with Marcus now a private investigator and part-time mercenary.

Vegas Heat

Vegas Heat is a spin-off of Immortalia, following the characters Amanda Bennett, who is a police officer in Las Vegas, and her partner, who both become involved in hunting monsters while investigating homicides around the city. Aika Katō returns as Sakura, now a Yakuza monster hunter, who operates with a Yakuza team out of a Las Vegas Japanese-themed casino resort owned by the Hisayuki-kai Yakuza organization. The show takes place after season five of Immortalia. The series is filmed primarily at a studio in Las Vegas in the United States, with its first season airing in October of 2022.

Comic Books

A series of comic books inspired by the television series has been approved by Jack Alderney and Amanda Taylor. Taylor is involved in some of the writing. The comics focus on Isabelle's past, with issues of the books taking place in the medieval and Wild West eras.

Immortalia: End of Days

Immortalia: End of Days is a video game currently in development by game developer Crystal Dynamics and Quantum Inc's Gaming Division. It is scheduled for release in the summer of 2025. It is a spin-off from the television and movie franchise, taking place after the events of Armageddon and before the events of season seven of Immortalia. The game is expected to focus on the fallout of Armageddon and the death of Satan the Devil, and the initial formation of a government agency dedicated to the eradication of monsters and demons. The game is said to have a primary single-player main story campaign and a mix of co-op and online multiplayer features. Jack Alderney and Amanda Taylor are to write the story.

Reception

Immortalia has been well received by audiences and has had mixed reactions from critics. Audience scores consistently hold at 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, while critics have scored it at 71%. Its fifth season was criticized by critics has leaning into too much of the political sphere, acknowledged by the writers, who sought to avoid politics as much as possible despite the plot revolving around the President and the government. It has rated highly with fans and critics alike for its unique supernatural creatures and visual effects. Stunts and fight scenes in the show have been consistently critically acclaimed for their choreography and intensity. Into is third season, critics were concerned about too much going on, with multiple plots and subplots that made the show feel crowded. Critics otherwise said of the show, "Consistently thrilling, with solid character development", "delivers top-notch entertainment", "monsters that will give you nightmares" and "edge-of-your-seat thrills". In 2021, TV Guide ranked it as the #2 show on cable TV and #1 in sci-fi/horror.

Ratings grew to an average of 15 million viewers when new episodes aired, starting in season one with an average of 10-12 million viewers. By season four, Immortalia peaked with 21 million viewers on the season premiere and held strong with 15-18 million viewers throughout the rest of the season. Viewership decreased to an average of 12 million viewers in season five, with exception of the final three episodes, which brought in 18-20 million viewers. Immortalia is popular among people between the ages of 15 and 39, although it was designed to be watched by the 18-40 crowd. It was rated TV-MA by the NMRC.
