The Iraqi National Guard is a military force that is responsible for internal security and border defense in Iraq. It also provides an active reserve for the Royal Iraqi Armed Forces. The National Guard traces its lineage directly to cavalrymen and tribesmen that fought in the Great Arab Revolt for independence from the Ottoman Empire. It is primarily composed of Shia Muslims but also includes Sunni Muslims, Christians, Yazidis, and others. The force's personnel come from the conscription of Iraq's male population.
Since the 1990s, the National Guard has been used to restore order during protests and other civil unrest. Because of that they have been considered as the personal arm of the Iraqi monarchy outside of the normal military chain of command.
