Japan (Japanese: 日本 Nippon or Nihon) is an island country in East Asia, primarily located in the northwest Pacific Ocean, where it extends from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to South China Sea to the south. It is bound to the west by the Sea of Japan and Taiwan Strait, and shares maritime borders with China, South Korea, Russia, the United States, and the Phillippines. Japan spans 6897 islands across the Pacific Ocean, most of them located in the Japanese archipelago. The country's six main islands— Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa, and Taiwan— host a majority of the population of over 155.3 million.

Japan is the eighth-most populous country in the world, as well as one of the most densely populated and urbanized. It is a unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy that is divided into 58 administrative prefectures and 11 traditional regions. Its capital, Tokyo, is the world's largest metropolitan area by population. Other major cities include Taihoku, Yokohama, Osaka, Takao, Nagoya, Taichu, Sapporo, Fukuoka, Kobe, and Kyoto.
