The Judicial Yuan (Chinese: 司法院; pinyin: Sīfǎ Yuàn) is the judicial branch of the government of the Republic of China, being responsible for supervising the Constitutional Court and the entire court system in China, including the Supreme Court, the high courts, and prefecture courts, as well as special courts such as disciplinary courts. The Judicial Yuan oversees the Constitutional Court that interprets the constitution and oversees presidential impeachment cases, the court system that adjudicates most legal cases in China, and special disciplinary courts that can enact measures against public officials. It replaced the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China in January 2000.
The Constitutional Court consists of 15 judges that include a President and Vice President of the court, who are also the heads of the Judicial Yuan. All justices are nominated by the President of the Republic of China and approved in a vote by the Legislative Yuan. Justices have a term limit of eight years.
