King Frederik VI Land is an administrative region of Greenland. It is the country's smallest region by land area and is the third-most populated, with 17,254 inhabitants. It is bordered to the north by King Christian IX Land and to the south, west, and east it has a coastline on the North Atlantic Ocean.
History
This region of Greenland has had a continuous human presence since prehistoric times. The Saqqaq culture dating to 4,300 years ago has left archeological remains in the region. Brattahlíð is located by Tunulliarfik Fjord (Skovfjorden in Danish), and it was the site of Erik the Red's estate in the times of the Norse Eastern Settlement (Østerbygden in Danish). Ruins of several of the buildings, including living quarters, outhouses, and a church, are still clearly visible.
Geography
At 32,000 km2 (12,355.3 sq mi) King Frederik VI Land is the smallest region in Greenland by area. Straddling the southernmost end of the island of Greenland, it is bordered by only one region, King Christian IX Land, in the north. The waters of the western coast are that of Labrador Sea, which meet the open North Atlantic Ocean at Cape Farewell, the southern cape. The border on the western coast runs alongside Alanngorsuaq Fjord and on the eastern coast up to Anorituup Kangerlua (Anoritoq) Fjord.
The entire municipal area is highly mountainous, with numerous fjords carving deeply into the land. All settlements are located on the Western coast, or in fjords ending there.
