The Kingdom of Sierra has maintained diplomatic relations with the Sovereign Patriarchate of Avignon since its formal establishment in 1936. At the time of its creation, Sierra was going through the Sierran Cultural Revolution and the Second Western Schism had a major impact within the nation's Catholic community. Due to its anti-Landonist leanings and the Crimson Scare, the Sierran government recognized the Avignon Papacy as the continuation of the one true church and the Sovereign Patriarchate. Full diplomatic relations between the Kingdom and the Sovereign Patriarchate were established in 1987, on the initiative of Prime Minister Ted Brundy and Pope Urban IX.
The Sierran embassy in Paris is also accredited to the Sovereign Patriarchate and represents the interests of Sierra to the Avignon papacy. There is an Apostolic Nunciature to Sierra in Porciúncula, the main representation of the Sovereign Patriarchate to the Government of Sierra.
History
1936–1959
In 1934, the Second Western Schism had occured in which the wider Catholic Church would be split into two seperate denominations that both claim to be the leigimate Catholic Church and heir to the wider papacy, the Avignonese Catholic Church and the Roman Catholic Church. The former, based in Avignon, was formed in protest of the Second Vatican Council and their decision to adopt Christian socialism and declare Landonism compatable with Christian theology and the teachings of Jesus Christ. In protest, the Council of Avignon was formed in protest and proclaimed the creation of the Avignonese Catholic Church in protest and denounced the Roman Church as heretical, declaring Damasus III as the new pope in protest of Pius XI of Rome. This was watched closely by Sierra who was going through a Crimson scare phase and was at war with the United Commonwealth, resulting in the Sierran government siding with the Avignon Roman Catholic Church.
