Deputy | Franklin Jones |
In Georgeland politics, the Leader of the Opposition is the official, statutory title of the politician who leads the largest party in the House of Commons outside the government. The position is based on constitutional convention, but since the 1930s has had an official status including a salary and additional staff.
The Leader of the Opposition is chosen by members of their party, according to internal party processes. For most of the office's existence, leaders were elected by the party's parliamentarians, but in more recent years party rank-and-file members have also been involved. Since October 2022 the Leader of the Opposition has been Mary-Jane Epstein of Vox. The Leader of the Opposition is assisted by a deputy leader, currently Franklin Jones.
On rare occasions a member of the Senate has been elected leader of the opposition party. In this event, the practice has been to appoint a member of the lower house to act as Leader until the party leader can enter the House of Commons. The person so nominated is considered the interim leader of the opposition until the official leader is able to assume the post.
