Minister for Health (Georgeland)
In the government of Georgeland, the Minister for Health, Ageing and Childhood is the Cabinet minister responsible for national health policy, the administration of federal health authorities, and oversight of national health bodies and agencies including the National Health Service.
The federal Department of Health was created in 1925 by the Labour government of Oscar Lyne, to co-ordinate federal health policy. Despite some Conservative opposition, it was retained under all successive governments. Healthcare, like education, is primarily controlled by states however, through its administration of the NHS the federal government has a strong funding and oversight role. Since the establishment of the NHS in 1957, the federal minister has been a senior, authoritative portfolio.
The current Minister for Health, Ageing and Childhood is the Hon. Yvonne Otway MP. She is assisted by the junior Minister for Ageing and Childcare, the Hon. Anne Prentice MP.
As with many ministerial positions, the title of the Health Minister and the associated department is subject to regular change as new agencies and responsibilities are added and removed.
