The minister of foreign affairs of the Kingdom of Sierra, commonly known as the foreign minister, is a cabinet-level position and ministerial office within the federal government that serves as the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the most senior diplomat of the Kingdom of Sierra. The office holder is one of the most senior ranking and important figures in the cabinet and ranks high in the prime ministerial line of succession on par with the Minister of the Interior and the deputy prime minister.

The position was established in 1858 by Charles I as one of the first ministerial offices that were created in the new government. Modeled in pary by both the Foreign Secretary in the United Kingdom and the secretary of state in the United States, the office of foreign minister is to serve as Sierra's chief diplomatic representative in regards to international relations and is to serve as the federal government's chief advisor in terms of diplomacy, the country's foreign relations, and is responsible for helping craft Sierra's wider foreign policy. The precursor to the office was the position of Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the California Republic, Sierra's predecessor state.

The minister of foreign affairs is appointed directly by the prime minister and requires advise and consent from the Sierran Senate with any nominee for the position having to testify to the Committee on Foreign Relations before a final vote can be held. Any confirmation requires at minimum a bare majority of votes from all 155 senators in order to take office. Along with being the head of the ministry of foreign affairs and a member of the cabinet, the offic eholder is also a member of the National Security Council and helps craft, advise, and oversee both foreign policy and all policies in regard to national security along with the National Security Advisor.

The current foreign minister is Isabelle Huynh, who took office on December 2, 2022, after being confirmed by the Senate 132–23.

History

The history of the office predates the Sierran state as it had existed in the California Republic in the form of the secretary of foreign affairs which served as the official diplomatic representative of the California Republic and the chief foreign policy advisor for the federal government. When the Kingdom of Sierra and its government was established in 1858, the position of foreign minister was established along with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, many of the same roles and responsibilities were carried over to the new office as well.
