The Sovereign Prince of Greenland (Danish: Suveræn fyrste af Grønland) is the head of state and reigning monarch of the Principality of Greenland. While Greenland is a constitutional monarchy, the Prince still has considerable executive powers, though he often delegates these powers to the Minister of State and the legislature.
History
After the 1876 Greenland independence referendum held in August 1876, the country became independent from the Second Kalmar Union (now Skandinavia). Most members of the Greenland Provincial Council, the main governing body in the former Skandinavian territory at the time, preferred to have a monarchy instead of a republic. In September 1876 the new government of Greenland invited Prince Frederick William, a former candidate for the Danish throne, who was descended from the House of Hesse-Kassel and the House of Oldenburg. He accepted the offer and became the first Prince of Greenland, thus starting the Greenlandic monarchy.
