The National Intelligence Agency (NIA) is an independent national agency in Liberta. It collects domestic and foreign intelligence on behalf of the National Government. It also acts as the primary investigative agency of the government, investigating and prosecuting bribery, illegal lobbying, and other internal crimes. The NIA is a fully autonomous agency, its powers are vested within the second tier of constitutional laws, the Cardinal Codices.
The NIA was established in 1921 in the wake of the First World War, during the age in which modern espionage was pioneered. Its complex relation to the Government of Liberta, lack of transparency, and numerous controversies surrounding its clandestine activities in Africa has led to the agency being labeled a deep state. Several international observers and Libertan political analysts have frequently posited that the agency is at odds with the democratic values of Liberta. The NIA is comparable to many intelligence agencies such as the American CIA, British MI5, and Russian FSB.
