LIBERTY, D.I. — The Melanesian billionaire, Maurice Williams, has announced that in the spirit of republicanism and direct democracy, he has donated as $140 million dollars to the Sierran political activist group known as Republic. Making the announcement from his family estate in the state of Othello, Williams reported that he along with previous generations within his family, have always sought to promote the ideals of democracy within the former mainland United States. Mr. Williams reported that he believed it to be a public duty of all Melanesians to help bring democracy back to Sierra, and thus wished to play a leading role in inspiring countless other Melanesians by example. While no representatives of the Republic group were present to receive the donation, Williams acknowledged that his offer was received by the organization, and his receipt had been delivered. The donation of Mr. Williams to Republic would be the single largest of its kind to a Sierra republican group known to the public.
Historically, Melanesians of all strips have long supported the promotion of republicanism within Sierra, long counted as the "odd man out" as the old United States' sole monarchical successor state. Considered an affront to the majority of Melanesians whose ancestors fought for the liberty of their people, allowing tens of millions of fellow Americans to fall into a state of virtual slavery to a family of socialites from a bygone era turned nobles, is regarded as unacceptable in the island nation of former slaves. Consequently, donations of varying amounts from all levels of Melanesian society have been made to the cause of re-establishing true democracy in the American West. Indeed, in spite of his foolish socialist views and role in helping inspire the communist leader, Vladimir Lenin, Isaiah Landon is widely perceived as a hero in Melanesia for his leading role during the Sierran Civil War, and failed attempt at destroying the nascent monarchy of the so-called "House of Columbia", under Smith Charles Miller; the self-styled "Smith I of Sierra".
While there has been no official response from the Sierran government, it is widely believed within the Melanesian population that there will be some sort of backlash, especially given the large sum of the donation given by Mr. Williams. Since the start of the year, more than $500 million dollars have been donated to various republican institutions in Sierra by private Melanesian citizens. No stance on these donations has been given by the federal government of Melanesia, though it has been surmised by a few political analysts that it has unofficial backing from several high-ranking figures within the government, who would more than welcome a destabilizing influence in Sierra. Mr. Williams is the current patriarch of the famous Williams family, which produced two presidents for Melanesia; Othello Williams, the second president and namesake for the Williams family's home state, and Sylvia Williams, the eleventh president and second female president of Melanesia. Maurice Williams is Melanesia's fifth wealthiest man, with an estimated net worth of approximately $27.8 billion as of Q1 2019.
