The Republic of Intima or Intima, French: République de Intime, is an island nation located in the Atlantic Ocean, approximately 800 miles west of the Iberian peninsula of Europe. Intima has a land area of 169,000 square miles and a population of over 45 million citizens. Its capital city is Flora, and its largest city is Intima Beach. It is a Federal Constitutional Republic, led by a Premier, Lindsay Wesson, with three separate branches of government, including a unicameral legislature.
Humans first settled on the island in the 10th century, the Vikings, followed centuries later in the 14th century by the French, Spanish, Portuguese and English. Intima came under French dominance in the 15th century and was ruled as a colony known as French Intima. Intima gained independence in the 17th century after a civil war against the French monarchy. Intima rapidly developed as a result of being a key trans-Atlantic hub of trade and immigration. Its island nature forced it to become a naval power, competing with other European powers of the era. A result of its location, Intima has also earned the nickname "Atlantis", based on the ancient mythological empire alleged to have also existed in the Atlantic Ocean.
The Republic of Intima remains an economic, industrial and military power. It is a member of multiple international organizations including the United Nations and NATO. The country ranks highly in economic freedom, civil liberties, quality of life, human rights, healthcare and education. Intima is a highly developed country, and ranks 11th in total GDP.
History
Discovery & Colonization
Humans are not native to the island of Intima. Intima was likely first discovered by the ancient Romans, with archaeological evidence discovered in the southeastern portion of the country, including artifacts that date back to the mid 100's AD. No evidence of permanent Roman colonization has been found. It is believed that myths of Atlantis refer to Intima, leaving scholars to theorize the possibility that the Greeks had reached the island before the Romans. It is believed the Vikings arrived in Intima in the 10th century. A village of Viking origin was found near the city of Old Anderson in the northeast of the country, believed to be the first and only settlement by Vikings. In 1992, a wrecked Viking ship was found at the bottom of Anderson Bay. Archeologists believe a Viking vessel likely stumbled across the island during a trade expedition from the Mediterranean Sea and wrecked in Intima, leaving the survivors to settle in the area.
In 1350, the Spanish arrived in eastern Intima and following expeditions led exploration of the isle. The city of Alicante was founded by the Spaniards in 1402. The French began exploring the island in 1420 and established the city of Bayonne on the southern coast in 1425. The Portuguese would land on the island in 1438, followed by the English in 1456. The English established the city of Hartford in 1470. Intima's presence in the Atlantic Ocean led the Europeans to seek out what other lands may exist to the west. It is likely one of the motivating factors that led to daring expeditions that eventually led to European landings in North America beginning in 1492.
Conflict over the island was inevitable, leading the Spanish to push out the Portuguese in 1501, and the French to push out the English in 1520. The French consolidated the French and British colonies on Intima to form French Intima in March of 1521. The Spanish colonies divided French Intima in half, with the French colonies to the south and former English colonies to the north. Tensions between the Spanish and French colonists lasted for years until the Thirty Years' War devolved into the Franco-Spanish War in 1635. Battles took place on Intima, and with the Spanish colonies surrounded, by 1644, Spanish Intima had fallen to the French Intimian Colonial Army and militias.
French Intima
France formed the province of French Intima in 1521, following the defeat of the British colonists in 1520, placing the island's English north and French southern colonies under the governance of Pierre Clouet, the island's first Governor. French Intima absorbed the former Spanish colonies in 1659 at the end of the Franco-Spanish War. The entire island of Intima was united under French control. The island formally declared its colonial capital in the city of New Marseille, which remained the seat of government on the island until the Constitutional Reformation in 1820. During Intima's time under France, the island grew dramatically, becoming a hub of shipbuilding, mining, agricultural development and a port for the trans-Atlantic slave trade. French Intimians grew a culture of independence and a love of freedom. Many Europeans travelled to the island in search of a new life, similar to those who immigrated to the Americas. A culture of hostility developed towards the slave trade in the 1680 and 90s, joining a growing discontent with French Monarchism and religious repression of Protestants. French Intima declared its desires for independence in 1689. French King Louis XIV responded by sending a detachment of troops and ships to oust the government in New Marseille, which sparked armed conflict. Some scholars claim Spain partially to blame for inciting tensions between France and French Intima. This led to a civil war that lasted from 1690 to 1692. With ships from Intima's shipbuilding industry converted for use as warships by Intimian forces, the French army struggled to land enough troops to invade and control the island. The civil war evolved into a revolutionary war, which lasted until 1700.
Independence
On May 7, 1698, the French Intimian government declared independence from the Kingdom of France and formed a Republic style government. Two years later, the French acquiesced and gave up its efforts to retain a hold over the island. Charles Cartier was elected to become the first Premier of the new Intima Republic in 1701. Slavery was abolished in Intima, forcing out the trans-Atlantic slave trade, and freed the small number of slaves living on the island. Intima became a home to many Europeans fleeing tyranny for many years. Many stayed living on the island, while some immigrants would bounce from Intima, eventually travelling to the Americas.
The new nation began trading with the American colonies, the Portuguese, the Spanish and throughout the Mediterranean. Its shipbuilding continued to develop as a major industry. The city of Keyesport in the south rapidly developed into a major port city, becoming a hub for trans-Atlantic trading. By 1745, Intima had become a major Atlantic naval power, growth spurted by concerns of continued hostility from France, rumors of desires by the British seeking to take the island for itself, and the development of sea piracy in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas, which began to interfere with Intimian cargo trade routes. Intima remained neutral during the Seven Years' War that engulfed much of Europe and the Americas in 1756, but later provided assistance to the American colonists during the American Revolution in 1777. Like the French, the Intimians supported the Americans with money and ships. This resulted in naval clashes between the British and Intimians between 1779 and 1781. However, following the end of the American Revolution in 1783, the new American government and Intimians developed close ties.
French Revolution & Napoleonic Wars
In 1791, the Intimians sided with revolutionaries in France who sought to end the monarchy, despite threats from Austria and Prussia that they would invade France if the monarchy were abolished. The Intimians did not seek to become physically involved, however provided funding, arms and intelligence from its spy networks to assist the rebels. The rise of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1799 shortly followed with a war between Intima and France. The French accused the Intimians of supporting the rebellion in France to overthrow the monarchy, however Napoleon had a larger vision; the return of Intima to French control. Napoleon declared war on Intima in 1801 and launched an invasion of the island. The Franco-Intimian War lasted until 1804 and consisted largely of naval battles in the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. The initial invasion landed in present day Intima Beach and the city of Alicante to the north, resulting in the Battle of Alicante and the Battle of Flora. The French lost at Flora and were forced to retreat. Despite taking the city of Alicante, the French were pushed back out by forces from New Marseille at the Battle of Marseille River. Additional attempts at landing invasions were thwarted by the Intimian navy in 1803. With invasion attempts deadlocked, Napoleon abandoned his efforts to retake Intima, but naval warfare raged on until October of 1804 when the two countries signed the Treaty of Nantes.
The Barbary Wars
For years, the Intimian navy had been engaged in conflict with the Barbary states because of piracy and enslavement of captured crew. In 1805, the Intimians provided naval support to the efforts by the United States during the First Barbary War. Intima joined the United States again in the Second Barbary War in 1815, seeking to put down Barbary piracy. For years, the Intimian navy ran patrols to protect Intimian trade ships from piracy, but had not yet decided to engage in a full scale war to end the threat. Although the United States had forced the Barbary states to cease piracy, the Intimians joined with a British and Dutch flotilla, seeking to force an end to the slavery of Europeans. The Intimians aided the British and Dutch in the Bombardment of Algiers in 1816. Intima went on to target Tripoli and Tunis with a fleet of vessels in 1817, forcing the Barbary states to cease all abductions of European sailors and free European slaves. Intimian naval dominance reigned in the region for a decade on, ensuring compliance.
The Intimians became annoyed with the British however, as naval blockades from ongoing wars in Europe, and later the United States during its War of 1812, disrupted Intimian trade and resulted in a number of Intimian trade vessels being seized. Intima warned it would declare war on the British if Intimian trade vessels continued to suffer piracy, harassment and seizure. In 1813, a private Intimian armed cargo vessel fired upon and sunk a British war vessel off the coast of New Jersey after the British vessel attempted to board it. At the time, the British were blockading the United States, including the port of New York City. The incident led to a short-lived naval conflict between the British and Intima between 1813 and 1814. The British-Intimian Conflict ended with an agreement that the British would no longer bother Intimian vessels.
Intima Reformed
In 1820, Intima held a Constitutional Convention and reformed the entire government to model after the United States system. A new Constitution was drawn up, forming a federal constitutional republic, and forming the Republic of Intima. The new constitution was unique in that it garnered women more rights and legalized people descended from freed African slaves as full citizens. The new constitution declared a separation of church and state, and enhanced the criminal justice system and the due process rights of the people. The new Constitution declared the city of Flora as the new capital city and the government eventually moved its operations from the city of New Marseille in 1830.
With the rise of the industrial era, Intima developed a railroad network in the mid 19th century, and became a major producer of various goods, such as replaceable parts, construction parts, steel, lumber and coal. Its shipbuilding industry innovated new steel ships, as opposed to the wooden vessels of old. Intima's first subway network was built in Keyesport in 1889. By the turn of the century, in 1900, Intima had a network of electrical lines, power facilities and a network of telephones under the control of the Intima Power & Telecommunications Company. Urbanization developed quickly, with the first Intimian skyscraper built in Keyesport in 1928, rising to 377 feet.
World War I
Intima initially declared neutrality in the war, but like the United States, was eventually forced to take action as German submarines continued to attack trade vessels. Intima was outraged at the German sinking of the civilian passenger ship RMS Lusitania in 1915, but took no action beyond a formal condemnation. Throughout the war, Intima supplied France and Britain with supplies, arms and even manufactured warships. This made Intimian cargo vessels a target for German submarines. In April of 1916, an Intimian flagged cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk on route to France. Again, a cargo ship was torpedoed and sunk in May. Intima warned the Germans to cease attacks on Intimian vessels, and for a short time, the Germans complied. In 1917, with the resumption of unrestricted submarine warfare by the Germans, Intima deployed its navy and declared war on Germany after the sinking of a third Intimian cargo vessel. Intimian battleships, destroyers, cruisers and submarines engaged German targets in the Atlantic. Intimian Army forces joined French forces in the battlefield, taking part in the Hundred Days Offensive. By the end of World War I, the Intimian forces lost approximately 46,000 troops to the war, and another 25,000-30,000 troops to the Spanish Flu. The 1918 Spanish Flu spread across Intima, infecting 80% of the population by its end and killed approximately 200,000 people. With the invention of the radio and television, Intima experienced a burst of cultural developments in the motion picture entertainment and music industry through the 1920s. The Great Depression in the United States hit Intima in 1930, but a rebound was created through a series of New Deal-like programs to dramatically expand physical and social infrastructure around the country, bringing the country out of the depression by 1935.
World War II
Intima entered World War II on June 10, 1940 following the German and Italian invasions of France. An ally of France, Intima deployed military forces into the country to support French forces. Before the Intimians could arrive, the Germans had already broken through the Maginot Line and invaded Paris. Intima's strategy in Europe switched to supporting the Free French Resistance and Maquis with arms, funding, training and intelligence. The Intimian Navy cut off German naval forces from accessing the Bay of Biscay and the Mediterranean Sea through various naval battles and submarine warfare. The Intimians held strong along the western and southwestern French coast against German Forces, contributing to preventing the entirety of France from falling to the control of the Germans. The Intimians joined the British in fighting the Italians in late 1940 and into 1941, destroying much of the Italian navy. Intima began a bombing campaign targeting Italy in April of 1941, including the city of Rome. It did not seek to deploy troops into Africa, prioritizing efforts to hold France and push the Germans back out instead. It joined the Allies in 1944 at Normandy as the D-Day landings were carried out, while also pushing in from the south with Free French forces. Intima ended its participation in the war with the fall of Italy and Germany to the Allies in 1945. 300,000 Intimian service men and women died fighting in World War II.
Modern Era
Following World War II, Intima provided assistance to help rebuilding efforts in Europe. Its ties to European powers grew post-war, strengthening its alliance with the French, British and the Americans. Intima joined NATO in 1949. The country developed nuclear weapons in 1966 and expanded its nuclear program throughout the Cold War. In the years post-World War II and during the Cold War, with Soviet aggression in eastern Europe, Intima saw a new expansion of immigration into the country. The 1970s saw a new burst of Intimian cultural developments in film and music, becoming a growing competitor with the United States' Hollywood. Intima grew as an economic power into the 1990s, focusing on the development of domestic manufacturing and energy independence, taking advantage of nuclear power. In became a major manufacturer of electronics and components following the development of the computer and the internet. Intima maintained a policy of avoiding war where able to do so and refused to take part in conflicts such as the Gulf War in 1991, Bosnia in 1992 and NATO operations in Yugoslavia and Kosovo in 1999. Intima adopted the Euro as a legal currency in 2002, but retains the Intimian Franc as the official state currency.
In 2001, Intima joined the United States in the Global War On Terror, following the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington DC, and took part in operations invading Afghanistan as part of the International Security Assistance Force. Intima became a target for international radical Islamist terrorism as a result, with the 2009 Intima Beach massacre and the 2012 University of Intima, Hillsdale attack. It did not join the U.S. in the Iraq War in 2003 and did not join in intervention operations in Libya in 2011, but Intima did launch a series of retaliatory airstrikes against terrorist targets in Syria and Pakistan. Intima deployed in naval forces to the Gulf of Aden in 2009 to combat Somalian piracy. Intimian navy forces have since remained in the region and have bombarded targets in Somalia. Intima joined the United States and France in efforts to destroy the Islamic State terror group from 2015-2019. Intima continues to engage in special operations warfare and airstrikes targeting ISIS in Africa.
Intima responded to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in January 2020 by closing its borders to all unnecessary international travel and activating the military to assist in international shipping and delivery services to prevent potentially infected persons from transmitting the virus into the country. The efforts were effective into 2021, until the virus slipped into the country in March. Intima never engaged in lockdowns, following the Swedish method, which limited economic impacts to most sectors, but was forced to provide aid to the tourism industry. Intima is one of several nations that developed vaccines domestically. With development and distribution of vaccinations and treatments, Intima reopened its borders in September of 2021.
Intima has maintained a policy of non-interventionism in regards to the Russian invasion of Ukraine since 2014 and in 2021. It is the only NATO member that refuses to provide aid or arms to Ukraine and has repeated its concerns about NATO interventionism that could spark a larger direct conflict with the Russians. After the October 7, 2023 terror attack on Israel, seven Intimian citizens were among the hundreds of kidnapping victims taken by Hamas. The Intimian military deployed special forces and an amphibious landing ship to assist the IDF in recovering hostages from Hamas. Hamas surrendered all its Intimian captives by December 2023 following dozens of airstrikes by the Intimian Air Force and cruise missile attacks from its Navy. With the onset of Houthi terrorism targeting international shipping in the Red Sea in 2023 and 2024, the Intimian navy deployed additional assets to strike positions in Yemen and protect ships passing through the area.

The judiciary may overturn laws or policies that violate the constitution or civil rights. The Supreme Court of the judicial branch consists of seven justices who are appointed and voted onto the bench by the executive and legislative branches. Supreme Court decisions are determined by a simple majority vote of the justices. The court system of Intima breaks down into lesser courts that disputes must first pass through before reaching the Supreme Court. These courts are federal district courts positioned in each province. Often cases that start in provincial-level courts or municipal-level courts can end up in federal courts and end up before the Supreme Court for a final decision on the matter.
Provincial & Metro Governance
Intima is divided up into twenty administrative divisions known as provinces. Each province contains its own democratically elected three-branch government system and is led by a executive branch leader known as a Commissioner. Each province has its own provincial legislative assembly to make laws within their jurisdictions. These laws cannot violate or usurp the national constitution or the Rights of the People. Each province also maintains its own court system. The provinces have authority over local matters, such as general law enforcement, public education and public utilities. Cities, towns and villages also have their own forms of governance that may vary in nature. Large cities usually consist of a city council and a chief executive known as a mayor.
