Victoria (IPA: vɪk'tɔ:ri:ə), officially the Federal Republic of Victoria (French: République Fédérale de Victoria) or sometimes the Federal Republic of Victoria and Tasmania, is a sovereign country located in the south-east of the Australian continental mainland including the island of Tasmania, bordered by New South Wales to the north, Cairnes to the west, and the Southern Ocean to the south. Having a population of 5,918,712, Victoria is the most densely populated country in Australia and second most populous after New South Wales, and has one of the most ethnically diverse populations in Australia, mostly as a result of massed immigration to regional Victoria and Tasmania from Europe and Asia throughout the 20th century following the conclusion of the White Victoria Policy. Victoria's capital and largest city is Batmania, with other important regional cities including Port Mouhéne, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, and Warrnambool.
